Norwegian Brain Initiative (NORBRAIN): a large-scale infrastructure for 21st century neuroscience

Tildelt: kr 80,0 mill.

The large-scale infrastructure initiative of the Research Council of Norway (RCN) is a one-time opportunity for rearmament of Norwegian neuroscience technology. The call provides an unprecedented opportunity for coordinated investment into high-cost state-of-the-art equipment needed to sample large amounts of data at high resolution and high rate over large numbers of synapses, cells and brain systems in a way that will enable us to extract the fundamental mechanisms of brain function and dysfunction. The timing is extraordinary in that new spacious premises for such facilities are available at each of three flagship institutions in neuroscience - two Centres of Excellence and one Centre for Research-based Innovation. NORBRAIN would exploit this rare combination of opportunities to the maximum benefit for the entire Norwegian neuroscience community. By combining the knowledge and visions of the three centres, it is possible to establish a nationally coordinated infrastructure that would support cutting-edge brain science for many decades. NORBRAIN would contain unique next-generation equipment needed to address basic principles of brain operation that cannot be financed from the ordinary budgets of the host institutions. Through a system of associated members and a national training programme, researchers from institutions throughout the country would be actively encouraged to use the new facilities for innovative work in their own fields. The infrastructure would be one node of an international network of neuroscience infrastructures able to offer Norwegian researchers access to technologies not available in the national facility. The proposed infrastructure would make Norway a Mecca for large-scale advanced-technology studies of the brain
