Towards Sustainable Fish Feed Production Using Novel Protein Sources

Tildelt: kr 1,1 mill.

The project aims at developing scientific understanding needed to produce new fish feed products in a more sustainable and cost-effective way. Supply of fish meal has become one of the limiting factors in growing aquaculture production. In todays fish fe ed manufacturing practice, there are demands for increasing inclusion level of plant protein sources. Most of the studies that have been conducted to that respect were on the nutritional and health aspects. However, little information is available on the mechanisms by which different protein based sources affect technical quality of the feed as well as possibilities for improvement in their functionality. Typically, replacement of fish meal by vegetable protein sources leads to problems related to techni cal quality of the product and increased energy costs during production. A transition towards an increased inclusion of alternatives to fish meal requires a better understanding of differences in protein unfolding and aggregation behaviour induced by th e means of thermal and mechanical treatment. The focus will be given to evaluation and development of new biotechnological aspects that allow an increased inclusion of vegetable proteins into novel fish feed concepts. In the final stage of the project, a process design will be made, which can form a basis for an economical evaluation of the various product options created in the project.
