Visiting researcher grant for Daniel Gordon

Professor Daniel Gordon has visited NHH a number of times. These visits have been very successful; he has collaborated with current and previous faculty members at NHH, resulting in several publications in international journals. Some of these are listed in his abbreviated cv. Norway and Canada offer unique perspectives on salmon aquaculture production under different geographical, economic, regulatory and climate variations. Defining Norway as the reference case, the model to be developed will allow ide ntifying the impact of both economic and climate variables on production cycles, input mix, rates of disease and infestation, and quality of production. This base case can then be compared to the two production processes existing in Canada. On the east co ast of Canada, Atlantic salmon is reared in New Brunswick, with smaller production processes in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Although the basic production structure may be similar to Norwegian the differences in geographical location, regulatory and clim ate variation allow identification of the impact of these other variables on salmon production. Of particular note is the fact that Norwegian production is under the influence of the Gulf Stream whereas eastern Canadian production is subject to the cold L abrador Current. This in itself will show up as differences in sea temperature between the two production regions. Statistical techniques are well developed to allow the researcher to hold constant standard economic variables and location specific factors and then measure for the impact of climatic change. On the west coast of Canada, Atlantic salmon is also reared. Here the climate conditions for production change again with respect to Pacific Coast water temperature, salinity and other location specifi c factors. This allows us another set of actual climate instruments to measure the impact on salmon production.
