Predator-prey interactions between Eurasian lynx and roe deer in Scandinavia: from management to theoretical aspects

Tildelt: kr 0,15 mill.

We aim to perform a high-resolution study of predator-prey dynamics between lynx and roe deer populations in Scandinavia, to assess how this interaction between the 2 species affects their demography and conservation perspectives. This study answers to th e need for studies of prey-predator dynamics in large terrestrial mammals, but more specifically will allow the improvement of management policies on both lynx and roe deer populations, by providing managers with quantitative reliable information on the e ffect of their trophic interactions on population dynamics. The first, main objective of the project will be to assess the impact of lynx predation pressure on the dynamics of roe deer populations in Scandinavia. This will produce immediately applica ble information that will be available to guide management and conservation actions on both lynx and roe deer populations in Scandinavia. Nevertheless, on a more theoretical perspective, and given the availability of a long-term multi-species dataset, we will also explore the general issue of prey-predator systems in terrestrial mammals, to test how predation interactions can act as an evolutionary selective pressure, in shaping main life-history traits of prey species.
