Fish meal has been the most important protein source in commercial feeds for fish, due to factors including protein quality, component concentration, palatability, low cost and abundance. However, the growing awareness on sustainability issues in pelagic fish stock fisheries sector has lead to search for competent alternatives to fish meal for aquafeeds. Plant raw materials reach in protein, such as soybean, are used for that purpose, however, not without problems. Low quality, concentration and availabil ity of protein, low mineral availability, imbalanced aminoacid profile, presence of different antinutrients and inferior palatability are among the most common problems related to plant raw materials. Various processing methods are developed and applied i n order to tackle these problems. The commercially available processed plant products are however very limited. Further development and documentation on processing technology and product quality for commercially relevant raw materials are of outmost impor tance for the sustainability of the aquaculture sector. The scope of this project is the development of commercially feasible processing methods for the production of soybean meal hydrolysates. Different hydrolysing strategies, such as enzyme treatment, h eating, fractionation and fermentation will be selected and applied in lab and pilot scale. The quality of the resulting products will be evaluated terms of macro- and micro-nutrient composition and availability, toxicity and bio-activity. Provided that p romissing raw materials are produced and the time scope of the training period allows, a fish trial will be realised as well. The results of this project are expected to expand the existing competence of the host institutes in Norway and India on ingredie nt processing technology, attribute added value to a raw material of major commercial importance such as soybean meal and increase the competitiveness of Norwegian research, feed development and aquaculture sector
