The project aims at studying the interaction mechanisms of inorganic/organic nanoparticles with amyloid beta-peptides. Metal nanoparticles coated with photosensitizers will be produced and tested as aggregation inhibitors of amyloid-beta peptide, which ca use formation of neuritic plaques of Alzheimer's disease. Nanoparticle response to infrared radiation will be studied to determine whether nanoparticles emit light and if they are able to destroy amyloid aggregates. The innovative aspects of the project are the use of radiation and nanoparticles of non-toxic metals to inhibiting oligomer formation and fibrillogenesis. The metal particles are being studied as adjuncts to radiotherapy for cancer but were never tested, in combination with radiation, for Alz heimer's disease.
