Combined effects of nanoplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on zooplankton-fish interactions

Tildelt: kr 38 999

Micro and nanoplastics in the marine environment are new environmental hazards whose pernicious effects on biota are still largely unknown. Recent studies have shown that these particles may be ingested by invertebrate and fish. Furthermore, these particl es have been shown to adsorb environmental chemicals and thus toxicological interactions may occur. Three hypotheses will be tested in the present study: (i) ingested microplastics may be passed from prey (zooplankton) to predators (fish); (ii) PAHs adsor bed to nanoplastics are able to induce toxic effects on fish after exposure through food; and (iii) toxicological interactions between nanoplastics and PAHs occur in fish exposed through contaminated food.
