Research Collaboration and International Conference on Climate Change and Human Security

This project aims at shedding light on the state-of-the-art research on climate change and its human security implications (including climate-induced migration, resource scarcity and food security, natural hazards, and conflict). The project will establis h a new cooperation between the University of Hamburg and the University of Agder. Overall objective: Establish cooperation between the University of Hamburg and the University of Agder, Norway, to improve the understanding of climate change and human se curity interactions and to contribute to the upcoming fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Specific objectives: 1. Plan and hold an international conference on ?Climate Change and Human Security? at the Univer sity of Agder in Norway in June 2012. The proceedings of this conference can contribute to the upcoming fifth IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) assessment report. 2. Write a joint proposal for the theme on ?Environment (including climate ch ange)? of the next EU Framework Programme. 3. Apply qualitative and quantitative research measures of climate change and security research to produce a joint paper on ?Climate Change and Human Security? (lead authors: Christian Webersik, Jürgen Scheffran, Michael Brzoska) 4. Encourage the scientific exchange between young researchers: PhD students and a post doc will visit each other to write a joint paper on climate-related conflicts in African climate change hot spots. A PhD student from Hamburg and a m aster student from Norway will cooperate especially with regard to the social dynamics caused by climate change and on the organization of the conference. Furthermore, a post doc from Hamburg will contribute to the modeling aspect of the collaboration and the publications.
