NanoRedux - Perspectives on Reduction in Nanomedicine

NanoRedux er et prosjekt som ligger i skjæringspunktet mellom vitenskapsfilosofi og etikk. Hovedproblemstillingen er på hvilken måte nanomedisinske tilnærminger, der både diagnose og behandling foregår på et stadig mer presist molekylært grunnlag, har innvirkning på våre begreper om sykdom og helse. I dette forprosjektet (NanoRedux pilot) vil vi hovedsaklig konsentrere oss om tre undertemaer: 1. Kartlegge forskjellige reduktive tilnærminger i nanomedisin og relatere dette til sykdomsbegrepet 2. Undersøke utviklingen av molekylære klassifiseringer av kreft 3. Undersøke verdier som entrer nanomedisinsk forskning med utgangspunkt i samarbeid med prosjektet NANOCAN (Biodegradable nanoparticles in cancer diagnosis and therapy)

The NanoRedux pilot project will investigate reduction in Nanomedicine and its possible implications for conceptualizing higher-level phenomena such as disease, health, life and personhood. The project aims to provide a better understanding of foundatio nal aspects of nanomedicine, such as possible reductionist scientific assumptions, visions, metaphors and values that are relevant for setting the agenda for ethical discussion and that may have important implications concerning policy development and the formation of views on human identity, disease and health. The pilot will have two main foci. The first part will concentrate on the more foundational issues of reduction in nanomedicine, while the second part will focus on practical ethical implications and policy issues related to reductive approaches in nanomedicine. The project is revised to become a pilot project that will fund two part time researchers and extend from April 2013 to September 2015 (total budget is 1 mill NOK). There will take place national and international cooperation with researchers within nanomedicine. Cooperation is established between NanoRedux and a research group at the Radium Hospital in Oslo, and a research group at the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. In addition, the project will have an extensive national and international research network of both philosophers and natural scientists. There is also a strong emphasis on reflexivity and learning between relevant stakeholders involving cooperation with the REK-syste m and the National Biotechnology Advisory board to facilitate dialogue and learning between various stakeholders and project participants.
