Ecological Resilience of the Barents Sea

Tildelt: kr 0,13 mill.

In the last decades, the Barents Sea ecosystem has experienced rapid climate warming in combination with other environmental stressors like harvesting and pollution. The magnitude of the ecological impact of these stressors depends on the ecosystem vulner ability of the Barents Sea. Ecosystem vulnerability is influenced by structural properties like biodiversity, functional redundancy and food web compartmentalization. These properties vary extensively across the Barents Sea. The observed spatial variation in structural properties affecting ecosystem robustness and resilience calls for an analysis of its causes and implications. This project addresses both issues via a characterization and synthetic interpretation of the spatial variation in properties rel ated to resilience, and an evaluation of the risk of secondary extinctions associated with climate warming and fisheries. The risk of secondary extinctions will be evaluated via network analysis of the food webs characterizing different areas of the Baren ts Sea. The project output will contribute to the objectives of the NORKLIMA funded research project Barents Sea ecosystem resilience under global environmental change (BarEcoRe).
