Birds & Beasts: Shaping Events in Old Russian

Birds & Beasts-prosjektet har vært svært vellykket. Av avgjørende betydning for studiet av russisk språkhistorie er oppbygging av elektroniske korpusressurser, dvs. digitaliserte søkbare samlinger av gammelrussisk og middelrussisk tekst. Vårt korpus TOROT (Tromsø Old Russian and OCS Treebank) inneholder nå ca. 400 000 fullt annoterte ord. Dette er mer enn vi hadde forutsatt, noe som har sammenheng med at vi har lyktes i å innhente ekstra ekstern finansiering gjennom Senter for Internasjonalisering av Utdanning (SIU). Vi har digitalisert et betydelig antall russiske middelaldertekster, noe som vil få stor betydning for studiet av russisk språkhistorie i fremtiden. TOROT er den eneste digitale ressursen i sitt slag, og TOROT er nå så stort at det dekker alle utviklingstrinnene i historien til det russiske skriftspråket. Prosjektet har avstedkommet et stort antall publikasjoner i prestisjetunge internasjonale lingvistiske tidsskrifter, både innenfor språkhistorie og datalingvistikk. Et viktig bidrag er også monografien How Russian Came to Be the Way It Is, som ble publisert på det amerikanske forlaget Slavica Publishers i 2015. Fortsatt er flere publikasjoner i kjømda. Resultatene fra prosjektet er formidlet til studenter gjennom masterkurs ved UiT Norges Arktiske Universitet (2015 og 2016), samt i PhD-kurs ved Universitetet i Pavia, Italia, i 2015 og 2016. I april 2015 ble den internasjonale konferansen Slavic Corpus Linguistics - the Historical Dimension arrangert i Tromsø. I 2017 ble et seminar arrangert i Oslo.

In recent work in the CLEAR (Cognitive Linguistic: Empirical Approaches to Russian) research group at the University of Tromsø we have advanced the hypothesis that the category of aspect in Russian verbs represents a verb classifier system that is isomorp hic to a numeral classifier system. The Birds & Beasts project investigates this hypothesis from a historical perspective, exploring the historical development of the category of aspect in Russian. The contribution of the Birds & Beasts project concerns four levels. On the level of linguistic theory, we seek to expand existing knowledge about the typology of verb classifier systems. On the empirical level, we propose creating a corpus of Old Church Slavic and Old/Middle Russian that will parallel the arc hitecture of other corpora, facilitating linguistic analysis and comparison. On the level of methodology, we apply linguistic profiling to corpus data in order to explore form-meaning relationships and evaluate these relationships by means of statistical methods. On the applied level, this project has impact on the teaching and learning of Russian, a key component in the University of Tromsø´s strategy for building competence relevant to the Barents Region ("Nordområdene").
