Photogrammetric investigations of calving activity and flow rate on Kronebreen, Svalbard (RiS ID 6162)

Tildelt: kr 18 999

The proposed research is part of the CRIOS (Calving Rates and Impact on Sea Level) project which aims to apply optimised observational techniques for monitoring glacier motion and dynamics, as input for improved models of calving glacier dynamics. The pre sent study focuses on Kronebreen. Stereoscopic coverage of the calving front will be obtained with a pair of SLR cameras over a period of four months from May through August 2013. Fieldwork will also involve hot water drilling as well as the installation of a series of surface GPS and basal water pressure sensors. The data obtained will be combined with the time-lapse results to obtain a comprehensive picture of glacier response to surface melt and its influence on hydrology, velocity and calving. The dat a will therefore allow ice dynamic changes and calving activity at the glacier front to be understood within their wider glaciological context.
