Exploring the psychological effects of visual art communicating climate change

Tildelt: kr 0,17 mill.

The literature shows that environmental psychology and climate change related art have both been emerging quickly in recent years. More and more artists create pieces related to climate change, at the same time environmental psychology makes considerable progress in identifying mechanisms behind necessary behavioural change. However, the two disciplines interestingly have very little oberlap to date. This project aims to use psychological knowledge about mechanisms of environmental communication and det erminants of climate related behavior to stimulate the creation of art pieces which then will be presented in the context of the Kosmorama film festival 2013 in Trondheim. The art pieces will be created by a visual artist (Sam Jury) together with an inter disciplinary group of students. Afterwards the effects of such pieces on visitors and citizens of Trondheim will be systematically evaluated with qualitative and quantitative methods. The results will be published in a scientific journal. Furthermore, the pre-project will be used to establish contact with relevant networks in the area of climate change art like "cape farewell" and "imagine 2020" and explore potential collaboration for the main project. Ultimately, the outcome of the pre-project will be an application to the first round of KLIMAFORSK expected later this year. The aim for the main project will be a PhD project located between the disciplines of environmental psychology, visual arts and environmental communication. Ideally, the PhD cand idate in this project would have a background from arts and social science.
