Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts. 
The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas. 
Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely:
O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law. 
O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area.
A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations. 
The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.




Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Bilberry Ecology and the Regeneration of forest Ecosystem Functioning

Human impacts such as clearcut harvesting have left forests bereft of the organisms that underpin their functioning. The decline of key plant species has reduced the capacity of forests to store carbon (C) and provide ecosystem services to the people of Europe. The regeneration of forest ecosystem functioning requires a deeper understanding of how the traits of its species can be linked to ecosystem processes. The BEREFT project aims to elucidate how the plant traits of bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, modulate the dynamics of C and nitrogen (N) within the boreal forest. The project combines advances in chemical ecology with an innovative experimental design situated in Norway pairing experimental plots in formerly clearcut forest plantations with those from near-natural forests. I will collect a comprehensive set of bilberry's chemical traits and test both in-situ and in-vitro experiments to determine the underlying mechanism linking bilberry traits to C and N dynamics. The project goes beyond the state-of-the-art in applying novel methods from chemical ecology to measure bilberry's traits and uses a creative design to link those traits to ecosystem functioning. Through the scope of traits measured and the innovation in experimental design pairing clearcut forests with near-natural forests, this project will significantly advance our knowledge of the ecology of Europe's forest ecosystems. I will receive training in chemical ecology to advance my career as an expert in data generation and exchange with the host my knowledge on long-term ecological experimentation and ecosystem functioning. The project will disseminate deliverables in trait data packages, an open-source chemical ecology pipeline, and a robust measure of the effect size of bilberry's impact on C and N in the boreal forest. Knowledge of bilberry's role in the forest C cycle can be exploited by forestry managers in efforts to maximize C storage to meet the EU's goal of carbon neutrality.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


CULTUral heritage in RurAL remote areas for creative tourism and sustainabilITY

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

AQUASERV – RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE, FISHERIES AND THE BLUE ECONOMY

The overarching objectives of AQUASERV are to bring together, enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities (including facilities, instruments and expertise) and through the provision of transnational access (on-site or remote) and/or virtual access, to significantly further scientific advance and promote and facilitate the implementation of European Common Fisheries Policy, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy and the European Green Deal. 

AQUASERV will achieve these objectives by offering scientists from academia and business remote and on-site transnational (TA) and virtual (VA) access to an advanced set of European research infrastructures and its nodes related to research and management of marine and freshwater biological resources, food and biotechnology. These include the European Marine Biological Resource Centre ERIC (EMBRC), the Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems ERIC, The Aquaculture for Excellence for Aquaculture in Fish (Aquaexcel), and the Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition (METROFOOD), as well as the International Council for Exploration of the Sea, both a service provider and stakeholder. It also includes the Research Infrastructure for Science and Innovation Policy Studies (RISIS) to bring contributions from the social sciences and to bring results nearer to policy makers ensuring societal impact. 

To enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities, collaboration between partners and new pipelines to meet the objectives of the project will be developed during the first 3 years and will make available  to users.  To ensure these capacities will not be lost, a sustainability work package involving stakeholders will address the project legacy.

Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

The goal of the present study is to characterize benthic communities' structure and activities during the polar night in Kongsfjorden, a fjord highly influenced by warm Atlantic water inputs, and to contrast them with the results observed for other season s in the same fjord.

Store språkmodellar (LLM-ar), som ChatGPT, er i forskingsfronten innan kunstig intelligens. LLM-ar er i stand til å prosessere store mengder tekstdata, inkludert ustrukturert informasjon frå ulike kjelder, slik som nyhendeartiklar, sosiale medium og økonomiske rapportar. Dei kan avdekke mønster i store datasett som eit menneske ikkje greier å sjå, anten på grunn av storleiken på datasettet, eller fordi dei subtile samanhengane mellom ulike element i teksten ikkje er openberre for eit utrent auge. På same måte som eit menneskesinn prøver å finne samanhengar, kan LLM-ar brukast til å teikne eit nettverk eller ein graf av samhandling mellom selskap og andre aktørar. På den måten kan vi prøve å evaluere dei relevante aktørane som er involverte i mistenkelege aktivitetar. Prosjektet freistar å bruke store og små LLM-ar til å lese økonomiske rapportar, skattemeldingar og bankutskrifter. Formålet er å avdekke transaksjonar som er ulovlege eller gjorde med vond hensikt. Det er avgjerande å ta i bruk framveksande teknologiar som LLM-ar for å finne og identifisere illegitime økonomiske aktivitetar.

Illicit financial transactions constitute a serious ethical challenge to the proper functioning of society. Various regulatory frameworks enforce banks, companies, and governments to keep checks on illicit financial flows, yet in gross amount, these still comprise a significant portion of the world's trade value. At the forefront of exposing malicious entities involved in non-sustainable activities are investigative journalists. Yet assessing financial data in a digital world is a strenuous task. GAIJ – Graph-bound Artificial Intelligence Journalism – is a project centred on utilising modern open-source Large Language Models (LLMs) to classify illicit transactions in financial and tax records. The target of this pilot project is to develop a prototype open-source Artificial Intelligence (AI) model that examines and classifies transaction data, creating a graph of suspicious interactions between companies. 

This proposal is at the forefront of current research on the application of AI tools in Investigative Journalism. One core and distinctly unconventional aspect of GAIJ is that it utilised LLMs to classify data, not generate text. GAIJ uses not one, but a collection of LLMs to generate text regarding interactions between companies and classify actual interactions as regular or suspicious. This is the most striking, cutting-edge method employed in GAIJ, and thus naturally also the most challenging. Various questions and research avenues are open: Are LLMs capable of serving as classification tools, particularly of unlikely events? Are LLMs sufficiently powerful to unravel relevant information from interaction data like financial transactions? Are they able to discern between regular and illicit activities? On a large scale, GAIJ falls into the present pertinent scope of understanding what role AI models have in serving as tools to improve society and how can they aid, for example, journalists in untangling unsustainable financial practices from companies.

GAIJ - Graph-bound AI Journalism in Financial Fraud

Morrow Batteries jobber for å bli verdensledende på produksjon av bærekraftige og kostnadseffektive batterier. I 2024 åpner Morrows første batterifabrikk for prismatiske battericeller i Arendal i Sør-Norge, og Morrow har som mål å produsere 42 GWh battericeller årlig fra 2028. Morrow sin generasjon 2 teknologi retter seg mot koboltfrie batterier basert på høy-spennings LNMO katoder. Denne unike cellekjemien er både mer bærekraftig og billigere enn eksisterende teknologier, i tillegg til at den høye spenningen gir høy energitetthet. Dagens batterielektrolytter er derimot utviklet for batterier med lavere spenning og må derfor tilpasses LNMO kjemien.

NORSE-HV prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Morrow Batteries og Institutt for Energiteknologi (IFE). Prosjektet skal i hovedsak utvikle nye sammensetninger av batterielektrolytter som er stabile ved høyere spenninger og dermed kan benyttes i Morrows generasjon 2 battericeller. Et vellykket prosjekt vil muliggjøre industrialisering av koboltfrie Li-ion batterier basert på LNMO.

Lithium nickel manganese oxide (LNMO) is a high-voltage battery cathode material whose sustainability and low cost arises due to the elimination of cobalt and reduced use of nickel compared to many current cathode materials. The high voltage applied in LNMO cells can cause the electrolyte solution to break down, reducing the amount of energy the battery can store and shortening its useful lifetime. The NORSE-HV project aims to formulate and test new electrolyte solutions that are more stable towards high voltages, so that the cycle life of LNMO batteries can be extended. Morrow Batteries and the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) will combine their years of experience in battery development and testing to identify new electrolytes for LNMO batteries. Novel electrolyte candidates will be assessed both chemically and electrochemically and battery cell testing will be carried out in various cell formats to ensure industrial feasibility. These innovative electrolytes will then be incorporated into LNMO prismatic cells, to be manufactured at Morrow’s factory in Arendal.

Novel Oxidation-Resistant Stable Electrolytes for High Voltage

I Norge har det vært en økende trend til å benytte regnbueørret (Oncorhynchus mykiss) i oppdrett på grunn av dens raske vekst og toleranse for et bredt spekter av miljøforhold. I dag utgjør regnbueørret 5 % av den årlige produksjon av laksefisk i Norge. Produksjonen har økt med 14 % det siste tiåret, dvs. fra 14453 til 85233 tonn, noe som gjør regnbueørret til den nest mest produserte arten etter atlantisk laks. Til tross for den store interessen er oppdrett av regnbueørret begrenset på grunn av ulike produksjonsutfordringer. Næringen er bl.a avhengig av sesongbasert rognproduksjon. En utfordring er redusert tilgang på rogn i perioden fra juni til oktober, hvilket resulterer i en 5-måneders periode uten tilgang på stor settefisk, fra mars til juni året etter. Videre er forståelsen av hvordan ulike miljøfaktorer initierer og påvirker utviklingen av sjøvannstoleranse dårlig dokumentert. Bl.a. er overføring til sjøvann basert på kroppsstørrelse i stedet for osmoregulatorisk kapasitet. Av den grunn kan settefisken møte ulike helse og velferds utfordringer etter overføring til sjøvann, noe som kan forklare økende dødelighet (rundt 10 %) og høy forekomst av taper fisk (rundt 10 %) i sjøanleggene. Denne utfordringen påfører oppdrettere betydelige økonomiske tap og representerer et velferdsproblem.
I Sande-prosjektet har vi som mål å utvikle nye produksjonsprotokoller for regnbueørret, fra rogn til stor settefisk, basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme og vannkvalitet. En kritisk faktor i prosjektet vil være testing og validering av nye oppdrettsprosedyrer for å kontrollere fiskevekst og utviklingshastighet for å forlenge eller forkorte smoltproduksjonsperioden og tidspunkt for utsetting til sjø. I tillegg vil vi utvikle nye verktøy og analyser for å vurdere smoltkvalitet og tidspunkt for smoltvindu. Denne kunnskapen vil utgjøre en ny biologisk protokoll som tar sikte på å forbedre produksjonen av settefisk av regnbueørret, og som kan leveres til sjøanlegg hele året.

Idéen bak dette prosjektet er å utvikle en sesong uavhengig protokoll (Best Management Practice, BMP) for regnbueørret, fra befruktet rogn til leveringsklar smolt (settefisk), basert på optimalisert temperatur, lysrytme kontroll og styrt vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå), herunder kartlegge konsekvenser på fiskens ytelse, fysiologi, helse og produksjonstid. 
Prosjektet vil innbefatte tre feltforsøk som gjennomføres hos Sande Settefisk. I første forsøk vil effekt av temperatur på tilvekst, helse og kvalitetsutvikling hos regnbueørret i RAS bli kartlagt. Ett sentralt spørsmål vil være; Hvor mye kan vi endre produksjonstiden til ørret i settefiskfasen i vekstintervallet 20 til 400 gr gitt at snitt-temperaturen endres fra 12 til 8?C.  Dette spørsmålet er viktig da en forsinkelse kan benyttes til å dekke perioder hvor oppdretter står uten settefisk som følge av underskudd på egg om våren. Videre vil vi kartlegge hva som er optimalt lysregime under styrt smoltutvikling, herunder gir best smoltkvalitet. Avslutningsvis vil vi undersøke sammenheng mellom variasjon i vannkvalitet (CO2 nivå) på velferd, tilvekst, helse og kvalitet hos regnbueørret. En viktig del av utviklingsarbeidet vil være teste og validere en nyutviklet analyse for vurdering av smoltkvalitet hos regnbueørret (1. Innovasjon). Basert på positive funn og en integrert tolkning av samspillet mellom biologi, drift og vannmiljø, vil vi foreslå analysemetoder og strategier som bedrer fiskens kvalitet og tilvekstpotensial. Kunnskapen vil sammenfattes i en ny biologisk protokoll (BMP, 2. Innovasjon) for optimal sesonguavhengig produksjon av høykvalitets regnbueørret.  I sum vil prosjektet bidra til å sikre en jevn tilgang på settefisk som kan overføres til sjø hele året, og derav styrke oppdrett av regnbueørret i ett bærekraftig fremtidsrettet perspektiv.

Ettersom klimaendringene akselererer, og bringer med seg uforutsigbare værmønstre og redusert nedbør, har behovet for innovative løsninger for vannforvaltning aldri vært mer presserende.

Vår tilnærming er todelt. For det første revolusjonerer vi vannfordelingen gjennom banebrytende teknolo-gi. Forestill deg et smart nettverk der tingenes internett og kunstig intelligens arbeider sammen, og skaper et system som ikke bare forstår, men forutser vannbehov. Dette systemet kan forutsi etterspørselen i sann-tid, justere distribusjonen deretter, og til og med identifisere lekkasjer eller ineffektiviteter – med poten-siale for betydelig reduksjon   i vannsløsing.

For det andre, ved å utnytte de siste fremskrittene innen vitenskapen om porøse materialer og pros-essteknikk, utvikler vi en teknologi som kan trekke fuktighet fra atmosfæren og omdanne den til brukbart vann. Dette er ikke bare et teoretisk konsept, men en praktisk løsning for å tilby vann i områder hvor det er en knapp ressurs, uavhengig av klimaet.

Vårt prosjekt går utover ren bevaring. Det handler om proaktiv forvaltning og bærekraftig bruk av vannres-surser globalt. Ved å integrere disse teknologiene i eksisterende vannforsyningssystemer, sikter vi mot å muliggjøre  en bærekraftig, langsiktig løsning på vannmangel, og sikre at alle samfunn, fra travle byer til avsidesliggende landsbyer, har tilgang til rent, trygt vann.

Dette er mer enn et prosjekt; det er en visjon for en fremtid hvor vannmangel er fraværende, og teknologi og innovasjon leder an i bevaringen av vår planets mest vitale ressurs.

This project addresses the critical challenges posed by climate change in the Mediterranean region, characterized by an anticipated temperature increase of 2 ºC to 4 ºC and a rainfall reduction of 4% to 30% by 2050. Given that over 70% of the region's water resources are allocated to agriculture and the prevalent inefficient water distribution in its predominantly small villages, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions to preserve and optimize water availability.

The project proposes a two-pronged approach. Firstly, it aims to enhance water distribution efficiency by integrating advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. This involves developing a smart water distribution system capable of optimizing water allocation, predicting real-time demand, and identifying consumption irregularities.

Secondly, the project addresses the Mediterranean's limited and unevenly distributed water resources by exploring alternative freshwater sources. A key focus is developing a novel water adsorption technology to extract water from atmospheric air. This technology leverages recent advancements in porous material science and aims to be cost-effective and efficient, irrespective of ambient conditions. Integrating this technology into existing water supply systems is envisioned to provide a sustainable solution to the water scarcity challenges exacerbated by climate change.

Overall, this project not only aims to tackle the immediate issues of water loss and inefficiency but also seeks to revolutionize water resource management in the Mediterranean region by harnessing cutting-edge technology and innovative scientific advancements.

A smart process for water harvesting from air and water distribution based on eco-friendly MOFs

Som autotrofer er planter er den drivende kraften bak terrestriske økosystemer. Bekymringsfullt står to av fem plantearter overfor trusselen om utryddelse, noe som kan påvirke andre organismer. Plantemetastrekkoding, som innebærer analyse av miljø-DNA (eDNA) for å identifisere taksa, kan standardiseres og automatiseres, noe som gjør det egnet for høy gjennomstrømning, storskala og langsiktig overvåking. Denne teknikken gir en skala og nøyaktighet i biodiversitetsundersøkelser som tidligere var utilgjengelig. I Europa støtter initiativer for naturbevaring seg på tilstedeværelsen av arter, og indikatorarter danner grunnlaget for beslutningstaking innen bevaring. Imidlertid trenger interessenter fra offentlig og privat sektor raske, nøyaktige og rimelige metoder for å overvåke plantebiodiversitet. Det transnasjonale og tverrfaglige METAPLANTCODE-prosjektet har som mål å teste og optimalisere pan-europeiske case-studier om metastrekkoding, gi anbefalinger for beste praksis, optimalisere analyseplattformer for artidentifikasjon og lage brukervennlige referansedatabaser som skal implementeres i europeiske og nasjonale infrastrukturer.

Plants are the driving force behind terrestrial ecosystems as autotrophs. Alarmingly, two out of five plant species are facing the threat of extinction, which may affect other organisms. Plant metabarcoding, which involves analyzing environmental DNA (eDNA) to identify taxa, can be standardized and automated, making it suitable for high-throughput, large-scale, and long-term monitoring. This technique provides a scale and accuracy in biodiversity surveys that was previously unattainable. In Europe, initiatives for nature conservation rely on species presence, and indicator species form the foundation of decision-making in conservation. However, public and private sector stakeholders need rapid, accurate, and inexpensive methods to monitor plant biodiversity. The transnational and transdisciplinary METAPLANTCODE project aims to test and optimize pan-European case studies on metabarcoding, provide best practice recommendations, optimize analysis pipelines for species identification, and create easy-to-use reference databases to be implemented in European and national infrastructures, in collaboration with BIOSCAN Europe, ELIXIR communities and others. The project will identify and specify gaps, publish best practice documents on FAIR data publishing of plant metabarcode data to GBIF and the INSDC databases, and implement ELIXIR-compatible multimodal DL models in novel tools for stand-alone metabarcoding analyses using different data sources. All METAPLANTCODE products will be available at project end FAIR+. The project will support knowledge transfer with associated partners and stakeholders from the start. Relevant stakeholders will be identified, priorities set, communication channels established, monitored, and revised as needed. Greater stakeholder engagement, training, and outreach efforts will be undertaken to ensure that plant metabarcoding becomes a routine standard for biodiversity monitoring in Europe and beyond in the future.

Harmonizing plant metabarcoding pipelines to support monitoring activities in the field of plants and their functional organismic networks

Kan saueavl være viktig får å bekjempe klimaendringer? Svaret er faktisk ja! Grunnen er at sauer produserer metan, en drivhusgass som bidrar til global oppvarming. Hva om vi kunne avle sauer som slipper ut mindre metan? Dette er selve essensen i prosjektet "Sustain Sheep."
I dette internasjonale samarbeidsprosjektet involverer forskere fra ulike land (Irland, Storbritannia, New Zealand, Frankrike, Norge og Uruguay) seg i avansert teknologi kalt Portable Accumulation Chambers (PAC) – mobile klimakamre – for å måle metanutslipp fra sauer. Gjennom disse målingene skal man dykke ned i genetikken bak metanutslipp og fôreffektivitet. Resultatet blir anbefalinger for nye avlsmål for sau for å redusere klimafotavtrykket. Potensialet og kostnadene knyttet til implementering av disse avlsmålene vil også bli grundig vurdert.

I Norge vil data fra Sauekontrollen og en genomisk referansepopulasjon bli utnyttet for å analysere genetikken bak metanutslipp hos sauer. I tillegg vil maskinlæring bli anvendt for å avdekke sammenhengen mellom sauens vekt, fôrinntak og metanutslipp. Det vil videre undersøkes hvor effektivt det er å selektere sauer med lavere metanutslipp ved å bruke en simuleringsmodell, en såkalt digital tvilling, av det norske avlsprogrammet for sau. Avslutningsvis vil effekten av å avle for redusert metanutslipp fra sau på klimagassutslippene per kilo slakt produsert bli beregnet ved hjelp av en gårdsmodell. Effekten på de nasjonale klimagassutslippene vil også bli vurdert.

Breeding can be a cost-effective way of reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from sheep, by direct selection for CH4 emissions or indirectly through improved productivity. Currently there is under-adoption of these measures as benefits are not captured by the market. Sustain Sheep builds on the successful Joint Call ERA-Net project Grass To Gas and will create infrastructure for incorporation of low environmental impact into national breeding schemes that dovetails into the IPCC inventory. Sustain Sheep is unique as all partner countries (Ireland, United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, Norway and Uruguay) have invested in the same CH4 measurement technology (Portable Accumulation Chambers). 
Sustain Sheep will 1) review the current scientific status of the potential to breed sheep for reduced CH4 emissions (WP1), 2) investigate genetics of CH4 emission and feed efficiency and model the mitigation potential from breeding and give recommendations for new breeding goals (WP2), 3)  forecast uptake rates, cost and abatement of breeding for reduced CH4 emissions (WP3) and 4) determine the best mechanism for dissemination and implementation of project result to maximize stakeholder involvement (WP4). 
In Norway, genetic and genomic analyses of data from the Norwegian Sheep Recording System and the genomic reference population recorded for CH4 emission will be done by NSG (WP2.1). Machine learning to investigate  relationships between GHG emission, ewe live weight and feed intake will be applied and validated by NMBU (WP2.2). The expected response to selection for breeding goals including enteric CH4 and/or feed efficiency will be predicted by NMBU using a digital twin of the Norwegian sheep breeding scheme and data from WP2.1, and the effect on emission intensities (kg CO2-equivalents per kg product) will be investigated using a whole-farm model. The impact of alternative breeding goals on GHG emissions at national level will be quantified using IPCC methodology (WP2.3).

Reducing sheep methane emissions: sustainability in practice via new breeding goals

Food security of Africa’s growing population strongly depends on closing the yield gap for cash crops like maize. This can be achieved by increasing the input of N and P fertilizers and applying artificial irrigation, which, however, could substantially increase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Therefore, alternative approaches to intensification must be sought. This project aims to evaluate whether selected plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) isolated from agricultural environments in SA and Cameroon can mitigate the negative effects of chemical fertilizers and strengthen drought survival of maize in degraded sub-Saharan soils. Known and newly isolated PGPB will be characterized and grown before testing them in pot and field experiments in SA and Cameroon. Better plant health can improve nitrogen uptake and thereby reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions while improving soil quality by allocating more organic carbon through increased root and litter input. The project aims to establish an empirical link between the use of PGBP, reduced GHG emissions and improved soil quality by measuring GHG emissions and soil chemistry in pot and field experiments in SA and Cameroon. For this, the Norwegian partner will provide equipment and know-how in GHG flus measurements and train local staff and students. Analyses of GHG will be carried out, among others, in the newly established GHG laboratory at the Wondo Genet College of Forestry and National Resources, University Hawassa, Ethiopia, under supervision of the Norwegian partner. The overall aim of the project is to contribute to developing novel, nature-based solutions to a sustainable intensivation of sub-Saharan crop production. If successful, inoculation approaches can be adapted and extended to Norwegian crop production, where inoculation experiments with N2O reducing bacteria are underway.

Agriculture is a major sources of greenhouse gases (GHG). In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), rapid population growth and land scarcity call for increased productivity to ensure food security. Intensification drives farmers’ reliance on inorganic fertilizer which results in increased emissions of GFGs such as nitrous oxide (N2O). Moreover, climate change is predicted to lead to extended periods of drought, further increasing the need for chemical fertilizers. Therefore, alternative approaches to intensification must be sought. One promising approach is the use of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB), particularly rhizospheric actinobacteria. Actinobacteria enhance soil quality by increasing the bioavailability of key nutrients, improve soil fertility and inhibit plant pathogens. Additionally, they produce compounds which may alleviate abiotic stress in plants. Maize is an important staple food in SSA where it accounts for 40% of cereal production. We will evaluate whether selected PGPB isolated from natural environments in SA and Cameroon can alleviate negative effects of droughts in chemically fertilized maize. Bacteria with demonstrated bioactivities associated with plant growth promotion e.g. N fixation, P solubilization, biosurfactant and siderophore production, will be formulated into bacterial inoculums and tested in maize exposed to drought stress. We will also investigate whether applying these inoculums reduces GHG emissions by enhancing fertiliser uptake by the crop. Plant-microbe interactions will be studied using molecular techniques such as whole genome sequencing and transcriptomics to confirm the bacteria’s role in the observed phenotype. Bacterial strains will be selected for the isolation and characterization of selected bioactives, and for patenting of novel compounds. The project presents a novel approach towards developing feasible strategies to help achieve climate neutrality in agri-food systems in Africa.

Harnessing African Microbial Diversity to mitigate Green House Gas emissions in maize production

Oslo Macro Conference avholdes 22. og 23. august 2024 med presentasjoner av internasjonalt anerkjente forskere, europeiske yngre forskere og norske yngre forskere. Temaet for konferansen er makroøkonomi med vekt på heterogenitet og kapitalbeskatning. Vi ønsker å gjøre makrokonferansen til en årlig begivenhet, og har gjort dette siden 2019. Konferansen skal fremme forskning innen makro og finansiell økonomi. Vi er spesielt opptatt av å fremme yngre forskere lokalisert i Norge, og på den måten stimulere til forskning på dette fagområdet i Norge. Et videre mål er å styrke kontaktflaten mellom det akademiske fagmiljøet på makro og finansiell økonomi og interessenter utenfor akademia. Konferansens vil være viktig bidrag i fagdebatten innen makro og finansiell økonomi samt være en bidragsyter i og utenfor akademia til det offentlige ordskiftet.

om makroøkonomi. Arrangørgruppen heter Oslo Macro Group (OMG), konferansen heter Oslo Macro Conference.

I august 2024 ønsker vi å arrangere konferansen igjen. Overordnete temaer:
Interaksjon mellom finansmarkeder og realøkonomien, finanskriser, makroøkonomiske effekter av bedrifters samhandling, husholdningers finansielle situasjon. Vi ønsker å ha med flere andre internasjonale toppforskere, men dette avhenger av finansiering. Dersom vi ikke får
full støtte fra Finansmarkedsfondet må vi nedskalere arrangementet og invitere færre internasjonale forskere til konferansen.

Med full finansiering, vil konferanseprogrammet bestå av presentasjoner fra om lag 5 internasjonale toppforskere, 5-10 yngre forskere lokalisert i Europa, og 5-10 forskere lokalisert i Norge (i 2022 hadde vi totalt 19 presentasjoner). I salen ønsker vi bred deltagelse fra forskningsinstitusjoner og politikkinstitusjoner som Norges Bank og Finansdepartementet. Tidligere år har vi holdt en paneldebatt på en aktuell økonomisk problemstilling som del av konferansen, og denne har trukket til seg deltagere fra andre institusjoner som  Finans Norge, Formuesforvaltning, Gjensidige, Handelsbanken, Kommunalbanken AS, LO, NHO, Statens Pensjonskasse. Vi ønsker å ha et liknende panel i år, avhengig av finansiering.

2 lunsjer med omlag 70 deltagere og 1 konferansemiddag med omlag 45 deltagere skal bidra til god interaksjon mellom de inviterte forskerne som presenterer, publikum fra norske forskningsinstitusjoner og øvrig publikum som ikke er fra akademia.

Oslo Macro Conference 2024

Med økende andel fornybar energi i samfunnet, øker behovet for teknologier for konvertering og lagring av energi. Energibærere som hydrogen får dermed økt interesse. Elektrokjemiske celler som produserer hydrogen ved elektrolyse har stort potensiale grunnet deres fleksibilitet og høye effektivitet, spesielt dersom de kan utnytte tilgjengelig kilder til restvarme. De såkalte protonisk keramiske elektrokjemiske cellene (PCEC) er blant de mest lovende på grunn av deres relativt lave driftstemperatur på 350-650°C.

Videre utvikling av PCEC-teknologi krever nye materialer med bedre egenskaper, spesielt for å øke reaksjonshastigheten ved oksygen/damp-elektroden. Imidlertid er det uklart hvilke egenskaper som bestemmer ytelsen til disse elektrodene. I dette prosjektet adresseres disse utfordringene med en kombinatorisk tilnærming som innebærer eksperimentelle målinger av et stort antall kjemiske sammensetninger av elektrodene. Hovedmålet med prosjektet er å etablere korrelasjoner og fundamentale sammenhenger mellom sentrale fysiske egenskaper ved elektrodematerialer og hvordan disse samlet bestemmer elektrokjemisk ytelse. Prosjektet vil dermed frembringe strategier for utvikling av nye elektrodematerialer med høy ytelse.

Den kombinatoriske tilnærmingen muliggjøres med en ny metode for deponering av tynnfilmer med gradienter i kjemisk sammensetning. Viktige egenskaper som elektronisk ledningsevne og kinetikk for reaksjonene ved oksygen/damp-elektroden kan dermed bestemmes for et betydelig antall kjemiske sammensetninger. En rekke strukturelle og kjemiske karakteriseringsmetoder vil også benyttes for å finne andre materialegenskaper som kan korrelere med elektrokjemisk ytelse.

Prosjektet vil ansette en doktorgradsstipendiat og en postdoktor, og arrangere en internasjonal vitenskapelig workshop i Oslo.

The project addresses with the materials science of protonic ceramic electrochemical cells, specifically the oxygen/steam electrodes that are often limited by the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions. Little is known about the detailed reaction mechanisms of positrodes and the rate determining steps of the electrochemical processes at the electrode surfaces and interface to the electrolyte. Another major challenge in the development and understanding of these electrodes is that their target property – electrochemical activity – represents a lumped parameter with contribution from several underlying physical properties of the electrode material and its surface. The project will apply combinatorial materials science to address the multiple and complex relationships between basic and electrochemical materials properties. This approach is made possible by combinatorial pulsed laser deposition (C-PLD), using segmented PLD targets, to prepare continuous compositional spread (CCS) thin films. Isotope exchange annealing followed by (time-of-flight) secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), combined with Fick’s laws of diffusion to access the central surface exchange coefficient and diffusion coefficients, is of particular importance. These measurements will be supported by a range of spatially resolved structural and chemical characterization methods. Synchrotron X-ray absorptions spectroscopy (XAS) will be used with focus on mapping the oxygen p-band center across CCS films, as a potentially important descriptor for the crucial oxygen evolution and reduction reactions. Moreover, full electrochemical characterization as a function of atmospheric conditions and anodic/cathodic bias will be performed on selected compositions. The role of bulk protonic transport through the electrodes will be clarified by fabrication of model electrodes with well-defined geometries and imaging of the active regions by ToF-SIMS after electrochemical operation in isotope mixtures.

Combinatorial Materials Science for Protonic Electrochemical Energy Conversion

I løpet av det siste tiåret har batteriteknologi blitt en stadig viktigere del av våre daglige liv, i tillegg til å være en viktig bidragsyter til det grønne skiftet. Men hvordan fungerer batterier, og hvordan kan de gjøres billigere, tryggere, og mer effektive? Mange av dere vet sikkert allerede svaret på det første spørsmålet: at elektrisk strøm mellom batteripolene skyldes at partikler som kalles ioner - ladede utgaver av grunnstoffer som litium - beveger seg fra en side av batteriet til den andre. Dette fenomenet heter ionledning og kan også brukes i brenselceller og termoelektriske enheter, som henholdsvis omdanner kjemisk og varmeenergi til elektrisitet. Materialer som leder ioner spesielt godt (eller med andre ord som lar ionene flyte relativt fritt gjennom materialet) kalles superioniske ledere og spiller en sentral rolle i disse teknologiene. Dette fører oss til det andre spørsmålet, denne gangen litt omformulert: hvordan kan teknologi basert på supersoniske ledere gjøres billigere, sikrere, og mer effektiv? Et viktig skritt i retning svaret er å forstå hva ledningsmekanismen er - eller, med andre ord, hvordan ionene beveger seg gjennom strukturen dannet av de andre grunnstoffene i det superioniske materialet. Dette er langt fra enkelt, siden det krever et “kamera” som kan fange opp objekter som er mindre enn en milliondel av en hårsbredde i størrelse og som ofte utfører over en billion bevegelser i sekundet. I SUPER^2 bruker vi en eksperimentell teknikk som heter nøytronspredning som “kamera”: nøytroner skytes på en prøve av superionisk materiale og spretter av atomene inne i materialet. Dette fører til et mønster i en detektor som gjennom detaljert analyse kan føre til ledningsmekanismen. Mer kritisk informasjon tilføyes av KI-drevne datasimuleringer som bruker materialstrukturen til å generere "videoer" av ionene. Gjennom å sammenligne simuleringene med data fra eksperiment sikter vi på å bane vei for fremtidens grønne materialer og teknologi.

Ionic conduction – the transport of ions through a material – is the fundamental mechanism behind green technologies ranging from batteries to fuel cells. One of the most promising material classes for these applications are superionic conductors, solid-state materials that have an exceptionally high ionic conductivity at room or elevated temperature. Despite their importance, there is a lack of detailed experimental information on how ions diffuse through these materials, and simulations of these diffusion processes are both difficult to run and prone to systematic errors. SUPER^2 aims to address both challenges by combining some of the most powerful experimental and computational techniques available to generate a detailed picture of the atomic-scale diffusion mechanism in several technologically relevant materials. In particular, polarized quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering will provide spatially and temporally resolved information on the diffusion and lattice vibrations, respectively, while ab initio-based atomistic dynamics simulations will complement these with mechanistic details and calculations of experimental observables. Beyond providing a better understanding of the selected materials, the project will permit the benchmarking of several ab initio approaches against experiment and generate a new and automated software workflow for data analysis and simulations. These developments will have significant implications for the development of new high-performance and sustainable superionic materials. The project will be executed by three partners: University of Stavanger (UiS) in Norway and Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and University College London (UCL) in the UK.

Neutron Scattering and Atomistic Simulations for a SUPERior Understanding of SUPERionic Conduction

Varmtvannsberedere har lenge vært en uunnværlig del av våre hjem og nå kan den også bli med i kampen for det grønne skiftet ved å lagre og distribuere energi på en enda smartere måte. Tradisjonelle varmtvannsberedere (VVB) varmer opp vannet og lagrer varmen til du åpner kranen. I det du tapper vannet, etterfylles tanken med kaldt vann som fortløpende varmes opp igjen. Men hva om du kunne utsette oppvarmingen til et gunstigere tidspunkt? F. eks når strømprisen er lav?
I dette prosjektet blir VVB utstyrt med faseendringsmaterialer, som er substanser som kan absorbere og frigjøre store mengder energi under en faseendring, typisk fra fast til flytende form. I praksis betyr dette at når varmtvannsberederen varmer opp vannet, blir en del av denne energien lagret i faseendringsmaterialet ved å endre dets tilstand.
Nyvinningen ligger i muligheten til å lagre større mengder energi over lengre tid og ved en lavere temperatur enn i tradisjonelle beredere. Når man trenger varmt vann, utløses frigjøringen av denne lagrede energien ved å starte en faseendring i materialet. Resultatet? En mer energieffektiv og samtidig pålitelig kilde til varmt vann, drevet av tidligere lagret energi.
Bedre lagringskapasitet og lavere varmetap vil være nøkkelegenskaper for å møte de nye kravene fra EUs Eco-design-direktiv. Belastningen på strømnettet kan reduseres ved å utnytte lagret energi i perioder med høy etterspørsel. Dette bidrar til å jevne ut svingningene i energiforbruket og redusere behovet for ekstra kraftproduksjon. For det andre sparer man kostnader ved å hente energi når strømprisen er lav.
IPN InterLES er et samarbeidsprosjekt mellom produsenten Høiax og Sintef Energi. Støttet av forskningsrådet (6,7 MNOK) og med tilsvarende innsats fra Høiax søker prosjektet å utvikle morgendagens teknologi innenfor smarte varmtvannsberedere.

InterLES aims to increase the energy storage capacity and reduce the energy loss of the next generation hot water tanks (HWT) by integrating latent heat storage. Innovative integrations of phase change materials (PCM) and smart control algorithms reduce electricity costs for consumers, enhance grid stability, and minimize energy losses. The outcome of the project will pave the way for more energy efficient HWTs and outphasing of gas-fired water heaters.  

Through the project we will design and test three integration ideas for PCMs in HWT systems: PCM filled in (1) macroencapsulation and (2) cylindrical containers within the water in the tank, and (3) a cylindrical sleeve with PCM around the HWT as part of the insulation. Multiple PCMs with increasing melting temperatures from bottom to top will be tested in the HWTs to ensure complete melting of each PCM within the stratification temperature profile, which varies across the height of the HWT. Each integration concept will undergo laboratory testing and computational modelling to evaluate its potential for mass production based on eco-techno-economic analysis to identify the most promising concept for further development. 

InterLES aims to develop a 200L combined water/PCM smart storage hot water tank with an increased storage capacity of 3 kWh / 30% and reduced heat loss of 7 W / 10 %. This solution could potentially be adapted to HØIAX's range of products, from small to large scale HTWs. If half of households in Norway adopt this smart storage unit, this would increase the total energy storage capacity with 4 GWh and increase the annual energy saving with 80 GWh. In the European market, this solution has the potential to increase the total energy storage capacity by 0.3 TWh and reduce the yearly energy loss by 6.2 TWh. HØIAX estimate they can more than quadruple their present sales volume if they are ahead in this development.

Next generation smart hot water tanks with integrated latent energy storage

For å nå målet om grønn energiomstilling er det avgjørende å videreutvide applikasjoner for lagring av elektrisk energi. Blant en rekke energilagringsløsninger representerer Li-ion-batteri (LiB) den mest utviklede og pålitelige teknologien, som gir høy energitetthet og langsiktig holdbarhet. LiB batterier har en direkte potensiale til å muliggjøre nullutslippsløsninger som en del av det grønne skiftet. Imidlertid trenger det voksende markedet for elektriske kjøretøy, forbrukerelektronikk og stasjonær energilagring høyere energitetthet enn det som er tilgjengelig i LiB-markedet i dag.
En stor innsats fra akademia og industrien er utført for å forbedre energitettheten til LiBs samtidig som den langsiktige ytelsen som kreves av applikasjonene opprettholdes. Mens energitettheten til katodematerialer nesten har nådd teoretisk grense, er den alternative silisium anodekandidaten til den nåværende brukte grafitten å være den mest mulige og økonomiske tilnærmingen til høy energitetthet. Bruken av Si-baserte anoder blir sett på som det neste trinnet i LIB-teknologiutviklingen mot høyere kapasitet på grunn av mineralets tilgjengelighet, lave pris og en bemerkelsesverdig lagringskapasitet for Li-ionene. Imidlertid resulterer betydelige strukturelle/morfologiske endringer under lade- og utladingssykluser til rask forringing av batterier fremstilt med Si-baserte anoder.
Hovedmålet med SIGNAL 2 er å forbedre levetiden til Si-baserte anoder ved å lage en Si/grafen-kompositt gjennom en skalerbar produksjonsprosess. Prosjektstrategien er å utnytte skalerbare prosesser for Si-vekst gjennom en CVD-prosess og den unike FORZA-produksjonsteknologien for grafen utviklet av CealTech. Vi forventer at vår nye tilnærming og FoU-resultatene oppnådd gjennom dette prosjektet vil demonstrere et anodemateriale som direkte kan introduseres i dagens LIB-produksjon.

The SiGNAL 2 project is a pioneering initiative aimed at developing a novel Si-C composite anode material for Li-ion batteries, synthesized from silicon nanoparticles and 3D graphene using a bottom-up approach. Building on insights from the predecessor project, SiGNAL, the project aims to devise scalable synthesis methods for the Si/Gr composite, with the goal of producing anodes that deliver a capacity of 800 mAh/g over 1000 cycles at 80% Depth of Discharge in a full cell, while maintaining 80% capacity retention. The project aligns with the thematic priorities for energy and low emissions technology and is expected to address high-density energy storage challenges for electric vehicles and other applications. With a commitment to societal impact, gender balance, and knowledge contribution, the project is anticipated to enhance the security of battery material supply in Europe, contribute to scientific discourse, and positively impact the battery industry in Norway. The strategic partnership with Elkem, a major Si producer, will further facilitate the market introduction of the proposed technology. This project will have a positive impact on other Norwegian industrial players producing silicon-based or graphene materials for the battery industry. And it will also facilitate the expansion of the battery department at Cealtech and lead to the recruitment of personnel specializing in material science, electrode design, and engineering.

Silicon-Graphene  Nanoengineered Anode for Li-ion batteries 2

Prosjektet har som mål å utvikle et heldekkende kart for våtmark i Norge. Prosjektet gjennomføres i et samarbeid mellom Kartverket (prosjektansvarlig), Norsk Institutt for Naturforskning (NINA), Norsk Regnesentral, Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO) og Miljødirektoratet.

Bærekraftig arealbruk i utmark er i dag utfordrende fordi kunnskapen om og kartleggingen av våtmark er mangelfull. Hensynet til våtmark skal i større grad vektlegges i arealplanlegging og forvaltning av arealer, slik at en reduserer nedbyggingspress og ivaretar økosystemer og deres betydning for klimatilpasning. Miljødirektoratet har nylig framhevet behovet for vern av store myrarealer fordi myr har en særlig evne til å binde karbon, samtidig som myr og våtmark er natur som har store verdier knyttet til biologisk mangfold.

Med bakgrunn i kunnskapsmangelen knyttet til myr og våtmark har prosjektet «Landsdekkende våtmarksdatasett» derfor som hovedmål å utvikle nye kartleggingsmetoder for våtmark, og vil utvikle et helhetlig nasjonalt kart og geografiske data om våtmark i Norge 

Kunstig intelligens og annen innovativ teknologi benyttes aktivt for å utvikle kartlag for våtmark. Enkelt forklart skal den kunstige intelligensen mates med blant annet satellittbilder fra Sentinel-2, høydedata og andre offentlige kartdata. Målet er at KI-modellen til slutt er opplært til å finne alle kategorier av myr og våtmark i Norge. Dette kontrolleres til slutt mot sikre arealdata fra andre kilder for å vurdere hvor godt modellen treffer. Nasjonale data om våtmark fra prosjektet vil hovedsakelig deles via den nasjonale portalen Geonorge, og distribueres som data og API. Dette vil sikre enkel tilgang for brukere innen planlegging, forvaltning mv. Prosjektet vil veilede hvordan dataene kan brukes på best mulig måte. 

Prosjektet har en kostnadsramme på 14 millioner kroner over tre år, fra 1.4 2024 – 31. 3 2027. Forskningsrådet finansierer prosjektet med 7 millioner kroner og Miljødirektoratet bidrar med 3 millioner.

Bærekraftig arealbruk i utmark er i dag utfordrende fordi kartleggingen av våtmark er mangelfull. Hensynet til våtmark skal i større grad vektlegges i anvendelse av sektorlover og innenfor arealplanlegging for å ivareta økosystemet og dets betydning for klimatilpasning. Prosjektet LAVDAS har derfor som hovedmål å utvikle nye kartleggingsmetodikker for våtmark og anbefale planer og tiltak for forvaltning av oppdatert våtmarksdatasett. Prosjektet vil gi et helhetlig nasjonalt våtmarksdatasett, hvor kvaliteten kan kvantifiseres og valideres gjennom uavhengige datakilder. Datasettet skal formidles og tilgjengeliggjøres på en hensiktsmessig måte for sluttbrukerne, gjennom brukermedvirkning, bruk av nasjonal geografisk infrastruktur og formidling rettet mot alle forvaltningsnivå. Prosjektets forskningsutfordringer omfatter for det første: Metodeutvikling for kartlegging og klassifisering av våtmarksområder som håndterer data fra flere jordobservasjonssensorer, integrering av domenekunnskap og føringer, samt estimerer pikselvis usikkerhet. En annen forskningsutfordring er utvikling og tilrettelegging av infrastruktur for en dyp lærings (DL)-prosesseringskjede, som muliggjør direkte tilgang til DL-artefakter, reproduserbarhet og effektivt samarbeid. Prosjektet forutsetter kunnskapsutvikling om brukerbehov og forvaltningsmodeller for innovasjonsrealisering. En større utfordring for klimatilpasningsarbeidet i kommunene, er at flere direktorater tilgjengeliggjør geodata både i ulikt format og gjennom egne kartløsninger. At prosjektet har med seg riktige og relevante samarbeidspartnere, god erfaring med deling av geodata og en bred tilnærming til bruk av etablerte nasjonale og lokale arenaer, ser vi som en viktig forutsetning for vellykket gjennomføring. Samarbeidspartene i prosjektet representerer offentlige etater og forskningsmiljø som gir en unik arena for å identifisere brukerbehovene, og jobbe målrettet med både teknisk, kartfaglig og naturfaglig ekspertise.

Landsdekkende våtmarksdatasett

Som en av de største mikroalgeprodusentene i Norge, er CFEED med å tilby bærekraftige fôrløsninger gjennom sin produksjon av mikroalger og hoppekrepsen Acartia tonsa. Hoppekreps er en type små krepsdyr, som i naturen er viktige beitedyr for fisk, hval og andre krepsdyr. Hoppekrepsen CFEED produserer benyttes videre som fôr til blant annet torsk berggylte og havbrasme, hvor den gjennom a° øke vekst, overlevelse og forbedret fiskekvalitet er med å bedre fiskevelferden og produktiviteten. En stabil tilførsel av høykvalitets mikroalger er avgjørende for a° ha en hoppekrepsproduksjon av jevn og god kvalitet. Mikroalgeproduksjonen er derfor grunnpilaren i CFEEDs produksjonskjede. 

En mikroalgeproduksjon starter fra ørsmå volumer av en algekultur, og skaleres derfra gradvis opp til større og større enheter før den kan høstes i en industriell produksjon. Bakterier i algekulturen blir ofte regnet som kontaminering og noe uønsket, og bakteriene kan påvirke veksten av algeceller negativt og føre til uventet kollaps av algekulturen. For industrielle aktører er en slik uforutsigbarhet utfordrende. Samtidig viser forskning at det finnes bakterier som fungerer motsatt, ved å promotere algevekst, stabilisere algekulturen og tilby fordeler i nedstrøms prosessering av mikroalgene. Å øke kunnskapen om hvordan man skaper et gunstig miljø og stabiliserer mikrobiomet (samlingen av mikroorganismer) fra småskala dyrking opp til industriell produksjon er derfor et viktig utviklingsområde for mikroalgeindustrien i Norge og resten av verden de kommende årene. 

Gjennom prosjektet MikRho ønsker CFEED, i samarbeid med Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO) og SINTEF Ocean, å styrke industriell satsing på mikroalger ved å bidra med økt kunnskap om interaksjonene mellom mikrobiomet og mikroalgen Rhodomonas. Kunnskapen skal benyttes til å etablere Rhodomonas-kulturer med gunstige bakteriesamfunn, økt vekstrate og stabilitet, samtidig som påvirkningen av dyrkingsteknologi og -forhold evalueres.

Som en av de største mikroalgeprodusentene i Norge, er CFEED med å tilby bærekraftige fôrløsninger gjennom sin produksjon av mikroalger og hoppekrepsen Acartia tonsa. Hoppekrepsen benyttes videre som startfôr til blant annet torsk, berggylte og seabream, hvor den er med å bedre utbyttet til fiskeprodusentene gjennom å øke vekst, overlevelse og å forbedre larvekvaliteten.

En stabil tilførsel av høykvalitets mikroalger er avgjørende for å ha en hoppekrepsproduksjon av jevn og god kvalitet, og mikroalgeproduksjonen er derfor grunnpilaren i CFEEDs produksjon. En av de store utfordringene for industriell mikroalgeproduksjon er mangelen på kontroll av mikrobiomet. Bakterier som gir redusert vekstrate eller kulturkollaps kan bidra til store økonomiske tap, mens et gunstig mikrobiom kan være med å stabilisere algekulturen og gi økt vekstrate. Å øke kunnskapen om hvordan man skaper et gunstig miljø og stabiliserer mikrobiomet fra småskala opp til industriell produksjon er derfor et viktig utviklingsområde for mikroalgeindustrien de kommende årene. MikRho ønsker å styrke industriell satsing på mikroalger ved å bidra med økt kunnskap på interaksjonen mellom mikrobiomet og mikroalgen Rhodomonas sp.
 
Sammen med NIBIO og SINTEF Ocean som FoU-leverandører, vil CFEED søke å etablere en stabil, reproduserbar mikroalgekultur optimalisert for industriell produksjon; med et gunstig mikrobiom, god næringssammensetning og økt vekstrate. Gjennom evaluering av algedyrkingsteknologi og etablering av protokoller for stabil oppskalering og drift i ny reaktorteknologi, vil prosjektet gi svar på kritiske spørsmål og utfordringer for CFEEDs etablering i ny fabrikk i 2026 og 2028. Resultatene fra MikRho vil dermed bidra til å sikre produksjonsstabilitet av hoppekreps, og gjøre at CFEED kan møte den voksende etterspørselen etter produkt i torske- og berggyltmarkedet, og fra markedet rundt Middelhavet.
