The overall objective of the envisaged BRUSHCLEANER project is to develop and test an innovative and fully automated environmentally-friendly paintbrush cleaner. The project is responding to the growing demand for compact and environmentally sound solutio ns in the paint and construction industries to reduce waste generation and limit the use of volatile organic solvents (VOCs). R&D challenges: For the project to be realised, a number of scientific and technical barriers which goes beyond current state-of -the art within automated brush-cleaning solutions will have to be overcome: -Cleaning chamber versatility: The versatility of painting methods requires a cleaning chamber that is adapted to allow highly effective cleaning of a variety of paintbrush and r oller types. The BRUSHCLEANER project will conduct testing and prototyping to optimise chamber design efficiency. This will including careful design of a brushless motor system. -Cleaning solution usage: BRUSHCLEANER intends to limit the requirements for cleaning solution to a low volume thus limiting resource requirements. To achieve this, a new waste solvent storage and recycling system must be developed and implemented and this design specification must also be central in the testing and prototyping of the cleaning chamber. -Waste management: The increasingly strict emission standards and corresponding costs in waste disposal requires BRUSHCLEANER to include a highly effective waste system. A combination of mechanical and chemical filtration is envisio ned with an automated system for handling filtration cake build-up. This filtration system will also be central in allowing efficient solvent recirculation and must have sufficient capacity to meet the cleaning needs from large-scale painting/construction projects. -A combined/integrated system: The cleaning chamber, brushless motor, waste storage and filtrations components must be integrated and the aim of providing a compact system (miniaturization, components etc
