The overall aim of the project is to design, manufacture and test the world?s largest sweep/twist blade adapted for offshore wind turbines. By increasing the rotor diameter and using a new type of sweep/twist blades the Sway Turbine wind turbine is expec ted to improve the competitiveness by 15-20%. In particular, with this project, we aim to demonstrate: theoretical reduction of Cost of Energy by 8% over offshore wind projects with non-sweep/twist blades.
The main R&D challenges involved in the project are:
1) Large blades are expected to have bigger challenges regarding the aerodynamic stability and this will be one of the main tasks in the project.
2) Blade design: Nobody has designed such a large blade with sweep tips before.
3) Manufacturing of sw ept blades is challenging.
