This project is driven by an unmet medical diagnostic need in the field of circulatory failure and for a range of patient groups: cardiovascular disease, bleeding shock (trauma), neonatal asphyxia, sepsis, wound healing, eye diseases etc. ODI Medical is developing a novel biomarker - the Oxygen Delivery Index (ODIN) - for assessing microcirculatory function using non-invasive optical technology. The inventor, Professor Knut Kvernebo has developed the scientific basis for the project through > 30 years of research work at Oslo University Hospital (OUS) in cooperation with The University of Tromsø, The Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, and The University of Linköping. At present the theoretical basis for the concept, as well as hardware and software solutions (alpha-versions) for collecting and analyzing data files are available, and have been characterized and verified in a number of animal and clinical studies. The concept represent a new diagnostic method and is intended for two purposes: 1. A diagnostic tool in individuals with established local or general circulatory failure to; a) quantify the degree of circulatory failure; b) make a prognosis for the condition; c) to assess effect of treatment. 2. As a tool for screening in infectious epidemics (Meningitis, Ebola, Bird flu), or early warning of infections in patents at risk for severe infections (ex.: newborns, or postoperatively). Products to be offered to the market are: 1) Hardware for bedside collection of microvascular data; 2) Hands on training course to use the equipment; 3) Acquired data analyses on a fee for service basis.
