Health care-associated infections (HCAIs) are infection occurring in patients during the process of care in hospitals or health-care facilities. This includes infections acquired in the hospital, but appearing after discharge and also occupational infection among staff of the facility. Of course, such infections can be transmitted actually in every public crowded place. It is estimated that 50% of these infections are caused by inanimate surfaces. These type of diseases could be prevented by achieving active entrapment of VLA nano-materials into different surfaces existing not only in the interior of hospitals but also in all places of high risk like public crowded buildings, hotels, public buildings, as well as in households. Moreover the automotive sector seeks nanostructured surface coating solutions to protect the interiors of cars and other vehicles (e.g. public transportation) from microbial odors and staining and to extend the usable life of the materials used.. SefC2Nano targets to implement VLA doped TiO2 nanoparticles into paints and sprayable coatings in order to provide photo-catalytic imposed anti-microbial and self-cleaning properties to surfaces. In turns these multifunctional surfaces will lead to a decrease of the risk of getting infected by inanimate objects by a factor of >90% in order to be used in the various sectors such as health sector, construction and automobile industry.
