Control of nanoparticle structuring for color design of surfaces and coatings

The general objective of the project is to create an transnational network that will develop original scalable nano-structured surfaces and coatings, electric- or magnetically controlled, with engineered optical functionality for coloration, reflection and transmission of light, providing innovative technology for future design or architecture, beyond the lifetime of the project. Nano-based assembly of materials is at the forefront of present materials science and technology, and the project responds to current needs for new generation of creative, entrepreneurial and innovative solutions in its field, where important inspirations come partly from biology (colors of animals or plants) and also from cultural heritage. The three targeted research objectives of the project are: (i) Development of scalable innovative routes for nanostructured materials for structural color control, (ii) Innovative use of tailored nano-structured materials in responsive surfaces and coatings for design and architecture (ii) Transfer of basic scientific expertise into private sector technology.
