5G Operating Platform

The project proposal will target topics regarding 5G SWnet Operating Platform: Designing, developing, experimenting, validating and demonstrating an open source Operating Platform able to integrate IT and Software Networks abstractions (NFV, SDN, Cloud, Edge and Fog Computing) to ease the development, execution, orchestration, management and control of network functions and services in a 5G virtualised infrastructure. In order to evolve and enhance these SWnet operating platform solutions to become truly 5G carrier grade (in terms of e.g. agility, robustness, scale and automation across heterogeneous resources and technologies) there is a need to address several fundamental topics, such as; SW architecture, conceptual models and their SW abstractions, programmability and well-structured APIs, service level awareness, integration, migration, evolution and security. This include tackling challenging issues such as on-the-fly integration of heterogeneous compute, storage and network resources into such carrier-grade, networked environments. Given such software-driven composition of resources, the project must address the challenging topic of dynamic design and provision of control capabilities to enable the so-called network slicing concept and to provide viable solutions for the in-resource control problem.
