Pre and Post Deposition Processes of Black Carbon in Snow

Tildelt: kr 74 999

The aim of this proposal is to better understand pre and post depositional processes of black carbon (BC) in snow. So far, little research has been conducted to understand the transfer function of BC aerosols in the atmosphere to BC aerosols deposited on snow/ice surfaces. Additionally, little is known about BC mobility in melting snow. We will sample snow as close as possible to atmospheric monitoring sites of BC in order to compare size distributions, concentrations, and optical properties of BC in the atmosphere versus in snow. We will also collect snow samples before and during the snowmelt season. Additionally, we will compare two methods for analyzing BC-in-snow. A more recent technique, the Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2), for which Dr. Khan has access to in Boulder, CO will be compared to the standard NPI EC/OC monitoring technique. This research collaboration was conceived during the recent Ny-Alesund Atmosphere Flagship working group meetings in Kjeller, Norway in early October 2016, and will contribute to goals of Working Group 4 on snow and aerosols.
