The project aims to produce a field data set of soil carbon profiles in the area around Ny-Ålesund, covering a wide range of environmental conditions. The data set extracted from this "natural laboratory" on Svalbard will become a cornerstone of the PhD work of the applicant which is dedicated to developing a numerical model that describes how carbon is captured in permafrost ground on timescales of several 1000s of years through processes like cryoturbation, sedimentation, etc. The proposed field campaign will therefore be strictly oriented at the requirements of model development and validation.
