The project concept and working title is «Experiental approach to sustainable cultural heritage modernization». The project approaches experience as the means to modernize cultural heritage. Experience can be defined as a mental phenomenon that is determined by external stimuli and elaborated via the mental awareness that people have from earlier experiences, mental needs and personal strategies. Experiences can be produced and delivered as products in itself (as in tourist and culture industries) or they can be elements added to goods or services. As asked by the call, the main products of the project will be a comprehensive framework for experience-based value creation and transformation of European coastal and maritime cultural heritage regions in sustainable, participative and smart ways. The generic framework will be supported by tools, concepts and methodologies that will (a) guide participative development (multi-stakeholder dialogue within and across cases), (b) foster evidence-based research on the impact of participatory approaches in cultural heritage policies and (c) support governance at local, regional and national level. The project will be centred around coastal case studies in Northern Europe, Western Europe and the Mediterranean. The cases are selected to represent a geographical spread in Europe. They cover different types of European coastal and maritime cultural landscapes and range from popular destinations of mass tourism (largely in the Mediterranean region) to the most peripheral regions of Europe (largely Northern Europe).Two distinctly different case types will be included; (1) Cases to build understanding of the societal importance of the (tangible and intangible) cultural heritage and experience based activity under investigation and (2) tailor made pilot/innovation-projects.
