Gave fra Statoil til NTNU, professorstilling + fagmiljø i Energy Transition

Tildelt: kr 1,3 mill.

The modern society needs more climate friendly energy solutions in order to meet the targets set by IPCC and limit global warming. Ensuring secure and sustainable energy sources is a central challenge to maintain welfare and continued economic growth. NTNU and Statoil are launching a new strategic cooperation on transition strategies for the energy system. In order to reach the targeted GHG emission reductions, significant changes to global energy systems are required. Resource rich nations like Norway, and oil and gas companies like Statoil, need to play an active role in this transition. Some of the research challenges are: - Energy scenarios towards 2050: What will the energy system look like in 2050? How will we get there? - The role of natural gas: Transition fuel, a permanent part of the system, or no role at all? - The role of the consumer: At the core of the transition we may find active consumers taking part in markets. How will that influence the design of systems and markets? - Energy & transport: How will a zero emission transport sector affect the energy sector? - The need for flexibility: What is the role of demand side management, energy storage and transmission in interplay with renewables? The programme will address these and similar questions in the interface between technology, economics, policy, environment, innovation and social sciences. The approach is interdisciplinary and international cooperation is at the core of the activity. The programme will integrate NTNU´s activities in a number of research centres with relevant activities, like FME´s, SFI´s and SFF´s.
