PES E-LAND- Integrated multi-vector management system for Energy isLANDs

Efficient, reliable and sustainable delivery of energy to all people is a world-wide challenge. Affordable distributed energy resources together with advanced grid governing systems have made it feasible to solve weak grid connection problems specific to remote areas in economical ways and at the same time decarbonize the local energy systems. For the past years, Smart Innovation Norway has worked with developing many of the standalone features that are needed for an independent energy system. Our first major achievement was developing and realising a local market structure for neighbourhood trading of energy, proven through the EMPOWER-project. Building on EMPOWER is INVADE, which unshackles the flexibility available at local level via unique platform based business models to reduce congestions and integrate more renewables into the system. INVADE looks at local and central storage through stationary and mobile batteries. Through projects like Smart Rural Grid and RESOLVD, we have and will be developing novel power electronics and governing systems for microgrid applications, also running in island mode. Much of the technology and research needed has already been realised from our previous work. However, there are some major challenges to overcome. In the E-LAND project, our main goal is to overcome these challenges by developing an integrated multi-vector management system with intraday, intraweek, and seasonal balancing capability. We will bundle previous innovations together with novel technology into a complete system, focusing on consumer involvement and local anchoring to maximise satisfaction and rollout-potential. The E-LAND project answers to all requirements of the ES-3-2018 call and will pilot the developed system in 3-4 European countries and in India. These pilots will demonstrate the benefits of a modular and tailored system compatible with existing technology solutions, standards and regulations.
