Limb wounds in horses are common, however healing is exceedingly slow and fraught with complications. Contrary to body wounds, limb wounds demonstrate only a small amount of wound contraction. The specialist procedure of applying split-thickness skin grafts to limb wounds stimulates wound contraction by unknown mechanisms. The objective of this project is to identify those mechanisms to develop a treatment strategy for equine limb wounds for use in general  practice. Limb wounds are severely impacting animal welfare due to an extended healing/treatment duration, and the risk of euthanasia due to a poor functional outcome. By stimulating wound contraction, healing time will be reduced, and the functional outcome improved, directly benefitting the welfare of wounded horse and reducing treatment cost for the owner. Aim: To identify dermal components stimulating wound contraction, and to develop this knowledge into future state-of-the-art treatment of equine limb wounds for use in general practice. Hypotheses: i) Application of dermal fractions to collagen gels seeded with equine fibroblasts will increase gel contraction in vitro; ii) Application of dermal fractions to experimental limb wounds in vivo, will increase wound contraction resulting in a faster healing time versus wounds treated by conventional methods. Methods: i) The contractile effect of different dermal components will be assessed in a collagen gel/ fibroblast model; ii) Identified dermal components will be tested in a standardized experimental limb wound model in vivo (n=5). Ultimately, results from this project are expected to improve wound treatment in horses, directly impacting animal welfare by reducing healing time and improving the functional outcome of wounded horses. This will also directly benefit horse owners and caretakers and making veterinarians able to offer better treatment solutions.

HESTEFORSK - Raskere og bedre sårheling hos hest med autologe hudkomponenter

Prosjektet «Wheelchair Activity Monitoring» (WHAM) sikter både på å øke fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere, og på å bidra til bredere mål om mangfold og inkludering av personer med nedsatt mobilitet, ved å fremme større tilgjengelighet og deltakelse gjennom innovativ teknologi og forskning.

Rullestolbrukere er tre til fem ganger mindre aktive enn den generelle befolkningen, noe som øker risikoen for å utvikle forebyggbare sykdommer. Selv om det finnes retningslinjer for fysisk aktivitet som er tilpasset rullestolbrukere, trenger vi fortsatt effektive måter å implementere disse på samt nøyaktig teknologi for å spore mulige endringer i fysisk aktivitet. WHAM har som mål å bidra til økt fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere ved å lage digitale verktøy for å monitorere og gi tilbakemelding på rullestolbrukerens aktivitet. WHAM består av tre faser: to år ved University of British Columbia (UBC), som inkluderer et samarbeid med eksperter innen atferdsendrings-intervensjoner for rullestolbrukere; ett år ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) og et halvt år ved Maastricht Instruments - de to siste fasene er viet til å utvikle de digitale teknologiene. 

WHAMs mål er:
1)	Å teste effekten av et treningsprogram på fysisk aktivitetsnivå og fitness blant rullestolbrukere,
2)	Å utvikle nøyaktige algoritmer for monitorering av fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere,
3)	Å lage et system som både monitorerer og gir tilbakemelding på fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere.

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioral intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create
a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

Topfinancing - WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Effektene av fysisk og seksuell vold på ofre og deres familier kan være ødeleggende og vedvarende, med potensielt langvarige konsekvenser for fysisk og mental helse, utdanning, sysselsetting og bruk av velferdstjenester. Mens strafferettssystemet anses som en viktig del av offerets gjenopprettingsprosess, er det begrenset empirisk forskning på hvorvidt strafferettslige prosesser hjelper og/eller hindrer bedring langs disse ulike dimensjonene. I dette prosjektet vil vi adressere dette kunnskapshullet ved å bruke en kombinasjon av kvantitative og kvalitative forskningsmetoder. I de kvantitative analysene vil vi bruke administrative registerdata som dekker hele befolkningen sammen med kvasi-eksperimentelle metoder for å kunne trekke kausale slutninger. Vi vil også benytte maskinlæringsteknikker for prediksjon. De kvalitative analysene vil supplere de kvantitative analysene ved å gi kontekst til et komplekst felt av saker og ofre og ved å identifisere potensielle mekanismer mellom strafferettslige prosesser og utfall for ofrene. Samlet vil disse metodene gi en mer robust, representativ og nyansert forståelse av hvordan kontakt med strafferettssystemet påvirker offeret på tvers av flere viktige livsområder både på kort og lang sikt. Prosjektet ledes av Folkehelseinstituttet (FHI) med Frischsenteret og Universitetet i Oslo som partnere. Prosjektet har et rådgivende utvalg med medlemmer fra Nasjonalt kunnskapssenter om vold og traumatisk stress (NKVTS), ETH Zurich, Universitetet i Oslo, Frischsenteret, Universitetet i Bergen, og OsloMet. Det er også tilknyttet en brukergruppe bestående av personer og organisasjoner som er i kontakt med ofre for vold og overgrep.

Victims of sexual and physical violence is one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. The criminal justice system (CJS) serves a critical role in providing assistance to victims of these crimes, enabling them to seek justice, protection, compensation, and closure. Yet, knowledge about whether the CJS helps or harms these victims is extremely limited. This project aims to remedy this by providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of the CJS in supporting and providing restoration for victims of physical and sexual violence in Norway. We will utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods across disciplines to study outcomes across multiple important life domains, both in the short and long run. For the quantitative analyses we will use exceptionally rich longitudinal administrative register data with full population coverage combined with state-of-the-art quasi-experimental methods for credible causal inference and predictive machine learning techniques. The qualitative analysis will be based on narrative interviews with victims, providing context and insights into how interactions with the CJS shape life stories. The results will yield a robust and nuanced understanding of how the different stages of the CJS impacts victims. This is particularly urgent given how the current emphasis on legal responses to assaults has caused a sense of obligation and civic duty for especially women to report incidents, while the chances of legal closure remain small. In addition to advancing the methods for quasi-experimental designs and machine learning within quantitative criminology, this project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and practitioners working in the field of victim support and rehabilitation and may inform current legal reform efforts aimed at addressing these issues.

Helpful or harmful: The effects of criminal justice system contact on victims of sexual and physical violence

The goal of the Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms (BECAME) project is to examine the functional neuroplastic mechanisms underlying mitigatory effects of bilingual experience on age-related cognitive decline. While evidence is available for structural brain changes supporting bilingualism-induced effects on cognitive aging (CA), functional mechanisms underlying such effects are not yet well understood. BECAME aims to fill this gap by investigating the trajectory of bilingualism-induced functional neuroplasticity across the adult lifespan (ages 18-85), crucially adopting an individual differences approach related to measurable degree of bilingual engagement. Importantly, although such benefits are thought to be rooted early in the lifespan, evidence for the timeframe and conditions of their early emergence is scarce. The choice of including the whole adult lifespan allows us to investigate these mechanisms and their emergence more directly from a lifespan perspective. I combine behavioral testing with brain recordings via electroencephalography (EEG). EEG is widely used in cognitive neuroscience to assess brain activity and the degree of communication between brain regions (functional connectivity) in response to stimuli and at rest. Combining behavioral and EEG modalities will allow me to test bilingualism’s effect on functional connectivity, as well as its consequences for functional efficiency, the minimum required neural activation to successfully perform a task. This will enable a detailed, evidence-based account of the protective effects observed in older-aged bilinguals, and how they are built from earlier life stages. By illuminating the relationship between multilingualism and resulting neurocognitive adaptations, BECAME will enable to capitalize on it as a health initiative, with manifold societal implications and the potential to be translated into actionable policies exploiting multilingualism to ameliorate effects of CA.

Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms

From the SEA to the SOLution. An integrative assessment of marine pollution in a changing Arctic

Marine chemical pollution poses known threats to human health and to biodiversity, ecosystem and societal services. The Arctic is a major sink of global mercury (Hg) pollution. Arctic sediments, sea and glacial ice constitute vast Hg reservoirs. Recent studies raise concerns about their increasing role as local Hg sources. In a rapidly warming Arctic, the consequences of potentially increased environmental Hg on marine biota remain unknown. The objective of SEASOL is to identify the pathway(s) of Hg bioaccumulation in marine food webs of the High Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard). This changing glacial fjord is recognised as a ‘natural laboratory’ of climate change in the Arctic. The fellow’s earlier research has shown the sole measurement of Hg levels as insufficient to connect biotic Hg dynamics to environmental change, whereas the analysis of Hg stable isotopes proved to be a promising tool for source discrimination and biotic transfer. SEASOL will build on the novel application of stable isotope analysis to identify the sources of Hg within the fjord system and the pathways to Hg accumulation within sentinel marine species. On the short-term, the study will provide fundamental knowledge to help understand how emerging sources of Hg from rapid environmental change will impact Arctic marine predators. On the long-term, SEASOL will contribute to the development of early-warning, adaptive management strategies, including modelling, for mitigating the cumulative impact of pollutants and climate change on Arctic marine species. This multidisciplinary approach and the central position of the host institution (Norwegian Polar Institute) in the field of Polar Research will equip the Fellow with a broad set of new skills and lay the foundation for building her specific niche as a future leader in marine pollution science.

Reality-Connected Machine Simulation of Heavy Machinery

The RealSim project proposal aims to connect machine simulation to reality in the framework of heavy machinery, which is an interdisciplinary application. The results of this project are expected to optimize machine performance, accurately and reliably predict machine failure, and reduce overall development and operation costs, thus, serving the Europe’s priority of green transformation and the United Nation’s sustainable development goal 9. The RealSim project will close the gaps of: (1) Onboard estimations of force and pressure components of heavy machinery; (2) Estimating deformability, cylinder friction, leakage, and valve dynamics of heavy machinery using independent nonlinear Kalman filters; (3) Employing dependent nonlinear Kalman filters in state estimators of heavy machinery; (4) Tuning algorithms for the covariance matrix of plant noise in the state estimation of heavy machinery. 

I will consolidate and leverage my research career and position as a leading researcher in the field through integration in Assoc. Prof. Mohammad Poursina’s group at the Department of Engineering Sciences of the University of Agder (UiA), Norway. Here, I will acquire hands-on experience of working with actual mechatronic systems and develop efficient control algorithms. I will improve my knowledge of fluid power designing, control theory, instrumentation, and develop efficient coding skills. I will also develop entrepreneurial skills. The skills, knowledge, and international network that I will develop during this fellowship will put me in an excellent position to achieve my long-term goal of becoming a professor with my own independent research group at an esteemed university in EU. This fellowship will help me to prepare a strong ERC Starting Grant application in the future. It will also cater my additional goal of setting-up a research-related start-up in the future.

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Enabling the next generation in search of blood cancer cures

The CarrerasPathfinder program is new a world-wide unique doctoral program that covers the entire spectrum of research and innovation in blood cancers from understanding disease biology to the implementation of novel processes in the clinical practice. The program will fund 14 excellent Doctoral Candidates (DCs) for a period of 48 months. DCs will perform collaborative PhD projects involving associated partners from different sectors, countries, and disciplines through secondments. DCs will improve their research capacity and transferable skills through high-quality supervision arrangements and a tailored training program.

The program has been designed and will be hosted by the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) which is the first European non-profit institute exclusively devoted to blood cancers. By answering the European needs for human resources, it is fully aligned with the 13 recommendations of the EU Cancer Board’s Draft Mission  and the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (2021). The CarrerasPathfinder program has a strong triple-I dimension of internationality, inter-sectorality and interdisciplinarity in training, networking, co-supervision and research. Its specific objectives are:
•	To develop an excellent doctoral program in blood cancer research conceived as a pilot for a permanent international doctoral program
•	To equip DCs with a unique skill set boosting effectiveness and innovation capacity. 
•	To promote DCs’ career development and increase their employability in different sectors.
•	To establish the IJC as a European reference for research and training in blood cancers.
•	To provide Europe with a new generation of researchers able to address unmet needs and societal challenges of blood cancers.
•	To contribute to structuring the European research area by collaborating and synergizing with other European key opinion leaders.



Tenk på universet som en enorm ballong som alltid utvider seg. Jo lenger unna et punkt er på ballongen, jo raskere beveger det seg bort fra deg. Dette ligner på hvordan universet utvider seg, jo lenger unna en galakse er, jo raskere beveger den seg bort fra oss på jorden.

I mange år trodde forskerne at universets ekspansjon ble bremset. Begrunnelsen deres var at gravitasjonskraften fra all materie i universet virket mot denne utvidelsen. Imidlertid gjorde kosmologer i 1998 en overraskende oppdagelse gjennom studiet av fjerne supernovaer: utvidelsen av universet akselererer faktisk!

Dette betyr at avstanden mellom galaksene blir større og større i stadig økende hastighet. Det er som om ballongen blåses opp raskere og raskere.

Forskere vet ikke nøyaktig hva som får universet til å akselerere. De kaller den ukjente kraften som får dette til å skje "mørk energi". Mørk energi er overalt i universet, men den mørke energien vekselvirker ikke med materie i de formene som vi kan observere direkte.

NEVO-prosjektet er et nytt forsøk på å forstå egenskapene til mørk energi. NEVO vil bruke kraftige datamaskiner for å simulere universet og studere effekten av kandidater til den mørke energien på en måte som aldri har vært gjort før. Ved å studere disse simuleringene og utnytte høypresisjons-observasjonene fra Euclid-teleskopet som nylig er skutt opp i rommet, vil kosmologene være i stand til å bedre betydelig vår forståelse av den mørke energiens gåtefulle natur.

The Universe has entered an accelerating expansion phase in the last few billion years of its evolution, a phenomenon that is caused by the mysterious entity known as dark energy. Through the NEVO proposal, I aim to provide key insights about the properties of dark energy, which includes its time evolution and spatial distribution in the Universe. This objective will be achieved by utilizing cutting-edge cosmological N-body simulations and novel techniques to study cosmic EVOlution accurately.

A comprehensive understanding of the nature of dark energy requires a thorough investigation of viable candidates and their impact on different stages of the Universe. However, the consistent and accurate modeling of dark energy candidates has been largely neglected so far. To address this gap, I propose the development of a novel, integrated framework that utilizes state-of-the-art relativistic N-body simulations along with the hi_class code, to accurately model dark energy candidates in both linear and non-linear scales.

NEVO: illuminating the dark cosmos

Global natur- og miljøforvaltning er en av vår tids mest sentralt og vanskellige mål. Mange av utfordringene skyldes motsetningene mellom vår fragmenterte politiske verden og økosystemer som ikke forholder seg til landegrenser eller politiske skillelinjer.
Ulike biologiske samfunn (biomer) som ligger i én stat, kan ikke løsrives fra et større økosystem. Derfor er flere «lokale» naturområder blitt del av den globale miljøforvaltningen.
Prosjektet RESOLVING skal se på politiske løsninger for en naturforvaltning som både er:
(i) lokal: som del av en stats territorium og hjem til ulike befolkningsgrupper
(ii) global: som kritiske deler av planetens økosystem
Hva betyr denne forvaltningen på flere nivåer for staters suverenitet?
Vi vet allerede mye om utfordringene nasjonalt oppdelt myndighet utgjør for effektiv forvaltning av jordens økosystemer. Vi vet derimot langt mindre om hvordan forsøkene på å styre jordens komplekse og grenseløse økosystemer faktisk kan endre selve systemet som forsinker den globale forvaltningen: statlig suverenitet.
RESOLVING vil prøve å forstå denne dynamikken ved å undersøke gruppene som faktisk utøver internasjonal naturforvaltning på vegne av eller parallelt med statene. Prosjektet vil her se nærmere på styringen av to områder som er viktige for hele verden: Amazonas-regnskogen og Guineabukta.
RESOLVING undersøker hvordan tiltak for å ta vare på disse områdene – laget på både internasjonalt, nasjonalt og lokalt nivå – fungerer sammen. Hvilke aktører får mer makt? Hvem blir inkludert i beslutningsprosessene og hvem blir utelatt?

The RESOLVING project asks: How does global governance of nature transform the exercise of sovereign power? Scientific evidence of the environment as a complex system of planetary dimensions has elevated several natural resources as objects of global governance. Primary forests and maritime biomes particularly capture global attention because of their systemic relevance for our planetary ecosystem. Still, international politics operates within a framework locating authority over nature indivisibly into territorially discrete and independent states. This project investigates the implications for sovereignty stemming from the construction of nature as a global governance object. We build on existing conceptualizations of sovereignty as a combination of de jure sovereign authority and bundles of de facto sovereign competence. In the case of nature, while permanent sovereignty over natural resources is an immutable property of state authority, a wider range of actors can be involved in defining the ways in which these resources are governed or even in governing them. RESOLVING will focus on two parcels of local nature especially entangled in global governance: the Amazon rainforest and the Gulf of Guinea. The project will investigate how networks of actors work across levels of governance to produce sovereign competence and exert sovereign power over nature in these regions. Sovereign power is the capacity to achieve de facto sovereign competence, here identified as the capacity to define and implement the rules of human–nature interaction. We look at multilevel governance from three angles: the global, the state, and the local. The comparative analysis of those networks across levels, regions, and regimes complexes will allow for identifying the mechanisms driving the rebundling of sovereign power with or away from the state, and a better understanding of the consequences of that process.

Dette prosjektet (PES) har som arbeidsfelt å etablere en AAL-søknad som følger:

MATE is a smart solution based on sensor and information technology that is supporting and safeguarding ageing population in their everyday life, towards ageing well. In practice, it is a novel biosensor device accompanies by an integrated system, which allows elderly to monitor the levels of health biomarkers in blood daily, using finger pricking, and keep their relatives and doctors informed for the health status. It is a predictive, preventive and participatory tool, which ensures personalized medical care for ageing people.

Primarily, the MATE targets are blood substances highly related to the onset and/or progression of ageing-associated diseases and mortality, such as uric acid and alpha-fetoprotein. According to scientific studies, elevated uric acid levels are associated with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality for both genders over 65 years of age. The development of diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and other diseases, are also correlated to uric acid levels. Alpha-fetoprotein is a biomarker used in medicine to detect certain cancers, e.g. hepatocellular carcinoma. Blood alpha-fetoprotein is low in healthy adults.

GeoImaging Ltd (Cyprus) will be project leader. According to the initial plan, the project will run for 30 months.

A smart health companion for ageing well

Kontroll av virussykdommer er nødvendig dersom akvakultur skal være langsiktig miljømessig og etisk bærekraftig. ViVaFish vil frembringe ny kunnskap, verktøy og metoder som er relevante for vaksinering av oppdrettsfisk mot virussykdommer, og redusere de mangler som finnes i dagens forebyggende arbeid mot virussykdommer. Forskerne i ViVaFish har lang erfaring og gode meritter i fiske-virologi og immunologi. Ved å kombinere kunnskap i medvirkende miljøer sikter ViVaFish mot å utvikle nye vaksine konsepter og forbedre dagens tilgjengelige vaksiner. For å oppnå dette vil studier av samspillet mellom virus og vertens immunsystem være sentralt. Derfor vil vi identifisere spesifikke funksjoner hos virusproteiner og gener som virker inn på effekt av vaksinering. ViVaFish vil utvikle flere svekkede- levende virusvaksiner så vel som selv-replikerende genetiske vaksiner for SPDV/SAV, PMCV, PRV og ILAV. 
Sammen med tradisjonelle inaktiverte helvirus vaksiner vil disse vaksinemodellene bli brukt for å forstå den ervervede og beskyttende immunresponsen i fisken. Smittemodeller for disse virusene er tilgjengelige og har blitt etablert av forskere i ViVaFish. Vi vil videre studere hvorledes den generelle, medfødte immunresponsen induserer en nedstrøms ervervet beskyttende respons, og utnytte dette til å designe vaksiner og adjuvans som gir langvarig immunitet og lite bivirkninger. Vi har vist at injeksjon av laks med plasmid som uttrykker interferon c (IFNc) DNA-vaksine mot ILA-virus gir god beskyttelse mot ILA og økt antistoffrespons mot ILAV i minst 22 uker. For PRV har vi karakterisert den akutte fasen av infeksjonen i detalj, virusfabrikker, påvirking på hypoksitoleranse, rensing av virus, funnet den viktigst målcellen (røde blodceller) og vist at PRV infeksjon er tilstrekkelig for å indusere HSMB. Vi har vist at immunisering av laks med renset PRV pluss adjuvans gir beskyttelse mot HSMB. Vi har også utviklet en hurtig metode til å måle mange ulike antistoffer i lakseserum i en prosedyre. Levende, attenuerte SAV er blitt laget og testes for egenskaper i laboratoriet; PRV og PMCV antigener er fremstilt i insektsceller og i planter; ulike virus- og DNA- vektorer som uttrykker PRV og PMCV gener er blitt fremstilt og testes ut.
Vi vil karakterisere molekylære og funksjonelle markører som korrelerer med beskyttelse. Effektive vaksiner gir langvarige antistoffresponser og etablering av T- og B-huskeceller. Derfor mener vi at det er viktig å forstå diversiteten og spesifisiteten av B- og T-celle responser i salmonider, og utvikle kunnskap om cytotoksiske T celler og lang-livede B celler. 
ViVaFish plattformen er et vesentlig bidrag for å kunne utvikle teknologi som er essensiell for å kunne kontrollere virussykdommer med vaksinering.

If aquaculture is to be ecologically, environmentally and ethically sustainable in the future, control of viral diseases is essential. ViVaFish will generate new knowledge, tools, and methods relevant for the vaccination of farmed fish against viral disea ses, thus reducing today's shortcomings in viral prophylaxis. Together the principal investigators have extensive experience and an excellent track record in the fields of fish virology and immunology. To develop new vaccines, and improve existing ones, a  broad approach will be used where replicating and non-replicating vaccine models administrated parenterally and mucosally will be studied.  Furthermore, studies of the interaction between vaccine candidates and the host immune system will be a central th eme of the proposed platform. We will develop a tool-kit containing live attenuated virus vaccines and/or replicons for SPDV, PMCV, PRV and ISAV. Together with traditional inactivated virus vaccines, these will be used to understand the elicited, protecti ve immune responses. Challenge models for all of these viruses have been established by the ViVaFish scientists. We will study how innate signals induced by the vaccine candidates translate into protective immunity and how this can be exploited to design  vaccines and adjuvants that promote long-lasting immunity while also reducing or abolishing side effects. Therefore, we believe it is important to characterize the diversity and specificity of the B and T cell responses in salmonids. Molecular and functio nal signatures of protection will be characterized, which will provide a base for the development of reliable in vitro assays that are predictive of protective immunity. Such signatures can be important for further vaccine development, and may reduce the  number of experimental fish needed for future vaccine testing. The ViVaFish platform will contribute significantly to the development of technologies that will be instrumental in the control of viral diseases.

Fish Virus Vaccines (ViVaFish)

Prosjektet analyserer russisk olje og gassektors og russisk petroleumspolitikks respons på endringer i ressursbasen og i markedene. Vil sektoren tilpasse seg eller motsette seg endringene?

Brede geologiske analyser indikerer at Russland har den største ukonvensjonelle ressurs-basen i verden. Men hva er potensialet for produksjon av skiferolje og andre ukonvensjonelle oljetyper?  Det er ikke tvil om at den russiske oljeindustrien er teknologisk I stand til å produsere ukonvensjonell olje. Det store spørsmålet er om det er mulig å produsere ukonvensjonell olje lønnsomt over tid. Vår studie, som sammenligner med skifer-revolusjonen i USA, argumenterer for at flere forutsetninger ikke er tilstede. For å utnytte ressursene effektivt og holde kostnader nede kreves konstant læring og tilpasning til en svært heterogen ressursbase. Dette er et svakt punkt i Russland. På et mer fundamentalt plan mangler Russland institusjoner som kan håndtere geologisk, teknologisk og økonomisk risiko. Russland vil fortsette anstrengelsene med å utnytte ukonvensjonelle ressurser, men potensialet er begrenset uten dyptgående endringer i institusjoner og rammeverk. 

Russland har hatt store forventninger til utvikling av nye store prosjekter i Arktis, spesielt offshore. Vårt prosjekt viser at oppstrøms-prosjekter i russisk Arktis ikke er lønnsomme under gjeldende skattesystem og er avhengige av skattelette for å bli realisert. Dette betyr mindre inntekter til staten og suboptimale investeringsbeslutninger. Den russiske stat ville kunne tjene på å gå over til et profittbasert skattesystem. Det er imidlertid fortsatt stor motvilje mot fundamental skattereform. Hovedgrunnen til dette er at skatte- og finansmyndighetene frykter at et profittbasert system vil være lettere å manipulere, mens dagens brutto-skatt system er enkelt å administrere og gir forutsigbare skatteinntekter. 

I en systematisk analyse av Russlands fem største oljeselskaper ser vi på hvordan de håndterer viktige eksterne endringer som oljeprisfall, skiferolje og klimapolitikk, og hvordan de selv endres. Vi konkluderer med at de ikke er så dårlige til å håndtere endring, men på grunn av russisk selskapskultur, med stor grad av disiplin og lydighet overfor overordnede, avhenger selskapene ensidig av tenkningen til et smalt segment mektige, middelaldrende ledere, og har derfor noen ganger vanskeligheter med å forutse endringer i omgivelsene.
Det statsdominerte russiske gass-selskapet Gazprom har de senere år stått overfor nye kommersielle realiteter i eksportmarkedet. Gamle modeller for prisfastsetting er satt til side, og mer av gassen selges på kortsiktig basis. Gazprom har til en viss grad tilpasset seg endringene, men nølende, og i mindre grad enn man skulle forventet hvis selskapet ville maksimere sine økonomiske resultater. Kan noe av Gazproms opptreden være et resultat av selskapets ideer og selvforståelse, heller enn materielle interesser? Vårt prosjekt viser at Gazproms ideer om seg selv har vært temmelig konstante selv om omgivelsene har skiftet. På grunn av den sosiale og politiske rollen industrien spilte i Sovjet-perioden og kontinuiteten i oppgaver som en statlig myndighet helt frem til i dag, er det riktig å snakke om en korporativ-politisk identitet og ikke bare en politisk identitet. Denne identiteten samsvarer med Russlands nasjonale identitet. Ved å anvende et idé-perspektiv knyttet til den historiske og institusjonelle konteksten i Russland får vi et mer sammensatt bilde av Gazproms adferd. 

Gazprom har dominert gass-sektoren i den post-sovjetiske perioden, særlig p.g.a. sitt eksportmonopol som har gitt selskapet mesteparten av dets inntekter. Men påstått ineffektivitet og selskapets manglende evne til å respondere på fremveksten av LNG som en globaliserende kraft i gassindustrien, har gjort at selskapets posisjon i Russland er blitt utfordret. I 2013 ble deler av eksportmonopolet opphevet. De såkalt uavhengige selskapene Novatek og Rosneft spiller en økende rolle både som eksportører og i det innenlandske markedet og presser på for videre liberalisering mens Gazprom kjemper imot.  Allikevel er ikke Gazproms posisjon internt i Russland blitt svekket i den grad vi hadde forventet. En viktig forklaring er at ønsket om å gjennomføre større reformer i gassektoren er blitt mindre på grunn av den vanskelige økonomiske situasjonen. Gazprom spiller fortsatt en viktig rolle som distributør av rimelig energi til store deler av befolkningen. Reformer som i en overgangsperiode kan forstyrre dette bildet er ikke ønskelig. Fortsatt vil gass-sektoren være et godt utgangspunkt også for å forstå den bredere økonomiske og politiske utviklingen i Russland.

The Russian petroleum industry is facing alarming trends. Upstream, decreasing size of discoveries and a falling recovery rate challenges Russia's ability to maintain its petroleum production. For Russia's gas sector, the structure and politics in core ex port markets represent an additional challenge. In order to secure vital revenue for the state, Russia faces a triple challenge of replacing current production capacity, making production more cost-efficient, and being more flexible in its gas export stra tegy. The Russian institutional framework, however, has yet to change in accordance with new realities.

This project focuses on how Russia´s oil and gas sector responds to current upstream and downstream challenges. Will there be institutional adaption o r resistance? 

This question is addressed through four work packages on institutional change covering unconventional oil, Arctic offshore petroleum, the business climate for IOCs and gas exports. The project will also include a PhD with the preliminary t itle: "The Russian Gas Sector in a Changing World: Gazprom´s Response to Export Market and Upstream Challenges".

Knowledge about these issues is of importance to the Norwegian authorities and industrial players who need to relate to Russia as both a neig hbour, business partner and a competitor in the petroleum sector. Succeeding in these three roles requires an understanding of the Russian institutional framework. 

Research on these themes is demanding, involving time-consuming data collection. But the  broader challenge is to interpret data correctly, beyond superficial reporting, requiring insights in the informal as well as formal aspects of Russian economy and politics.

Results will be disseminated scientifically through peer-reviewed articles, one  monograph and one edited book volume. Popular science dissemination includes op-eds and media appearances. The user group will be involved through on site dedicated briefings.

Russian oil and gas: Institutional adaptation or resistance?

De økonomiske kostnader ved off-shore brønn-boring kan reduseres vesentlig ved å gjøre de store effekt-brukere på borerigg og -skip hydrauliske fremfor elektriske.

Ved å erstatte elektriske generatorer og motorer med digital hydraulisk pump e- og motor teknologi kan størrelse, vekt og pris på høy-effekt systemene reduseres 30-50%, dieselmotorene kan reduseres i størrelse og energitapene kan minimeres. Det vil redusere prisen på disse systemene, og det vil gi et bedre skip/rigg layout til lav ere pris og med lavere driftskostnader.

På bakgrunn av denne tese ønskes etablert et Petromaks2 prosjekt som videre-utvikler de nødvendige teknologier og metoder og viser verdien av at lave et sådan paradigmeskifte.

I forprosjektet lages verdiberegninge r, identifikasjon av nødvendige teknologier og etablering av partnerskap til et Petromaks2 prosjekt.

Reduced cost of drilling by use of hydraulic power transmission

Bioremediation is a waste management technique that involves the use of living organisms, mainly microorganisms, to detect, degrade or remove pollutants. Specifically, the wastewater produced from O&G installations and petrochemical plants is a key focus  area due to strict regulation.  Effluents needs treatment before being discharged, and while main strategies to date have focused on the pre-treatment, degradation and/or removal of PAHs, a more persistent problem is caused by heavy metals. To this effect , a concentrated effort has been initiated by combining leading expertise from Norway and Brazil with the aim of recovering heavy metals by the use of a novel bio-active solution.  The starting point for the investigative effort is a protein with 1000x mo re affinity to heavy metals than any current solutions.

Besides the environmental benefits stemming from removing and recovering heavy metals, the value proposition related to creating a secondary market for commercially valuable metals will be explored.   Additionally, a more cost effective absorption method is likely to lead to changes in project economics - with the potential for additional tail end production and higher recovery factors as a result. 

As for the state-of-the-art, a series of chemical  and physical methods exist - including adsorption on synthetic polymer compounds (e.g. activated carbon or alumina) which have limited contact surface, form non-specific weak bonds and quickly saturate their binding sites. Chemical precipitation, reverse  osmosis and oxidation-reduction are technically difficult and costly. 

In terms of fit with the Petromaks2 program plan, the project has a natural link to theme 1 "Energy efficient and environmentally sustainable technologies" and theme 4 "Future technol ogies for production, processing and transport". 

Oil operator companies with onshore installations in Norway and Brazil are the main targets for securing financial support for a main R&D project.

Heavy metals bioremediation - Brazil/Norway cooperation

Hovedprosjektet i Petromaks2 vil være utvikling av tracere (sporingsstoff) anvendt til kartlegging av væskebevegelse i oljereservoirer. Sluttproduktet er tenkt anvendt både i konvensjonelle og ukonvensjonelle reservoirer.

Forprosjektets ambisjon er å eta blere det konsortium som er egnet til å gjennomføre forskning og utvikling for fremstilling av slike tracere.

Konsortiet er planlagt å bestå av, foruten Well Genetics AS, aktører innen følgende 3 områder:
1) Forskningsmiljø med spesifikk kompetanse innen  tracere.
2) Oljeserviceselskap.
3) Oljeoperatør med operasjoner innen konvensjonell og/eller ukonvensjonell oljeproduksjon.

Etablering av konsortium til Petromaks2

The overall goal of the 'Green binder for carbon products' project is to develop biobased binders for carbon products to replace todays fossile based coke tar binders.  This will if successful reduce the CO2 footprint of the metallurgic industry and impro ve the working environment in the same industry. In addition, it has the potential to increase demand for and utilization of biomass, as for instance Norwegian forest biomass and other local biomasses, close to the manufacturing sites for carbon products.  

The carbon products used in the metallurgic industry are both reducing carbon, as for instance in Søderberg electrodes and other types of electrodes for aluminium and ferrosilicium production, and carbon linings for the kilns. The coking tar binder use d for these carbon products today, is a fossile product richt in polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which constitute a major health problem in the metal industry.  The large volumes of such binders (4 mill tons annual consumption world wide) also constitute  a substantial contribution to greenhouse gases, since it is oxidized to CO2 during metal production.  

Elkem Carbon and Borregaard have joined forces to solve this problem and create a new business opportunity for both companies. This is an ideal partne rship since Elkem Carbon has the knowledge and R&D facilities to develop new carbon products for the metal industry (being the leading supplyer of carbon products today), and Borregaard have a leading position in biorefining and long experience in produci ng biobased binders. In the project Borregaard will tailormake biobased binders with optimized properties for use in carbon products. Elkem Carbon will test the new binders in both their pilot and full scale facilities, and make the necessary adjustments  and optimizations in order to make use of these novel green binders in their commercial manufacturing processes possible.

From a range of wood sources, like spruce pulpwood, demolition wood, wood shavings from furniture (IKEA)and energy crops (fastgrowing poplar) etc. the biomass will be treated in the BALi pretreatment and separation process at Borregaards BALI Demo plant.   They will also be processed at BPF's pilot/dempo plant by steam explosion.    The pre-treatment and separation procss will be Borregaards BALI process. From the sugar platform, several chemicals, like for instance Avantiums furfural dicarboxylic acid (FD CA) for production of polyesters, DSM's vitamins, enzymes and plastics, Green Biologics bio-butanol (to polyesters or chemicals)etc. The sugars from the BALI sugar platform are among the purest second generation sugar streams avaialbel, and useful directl y without purification to ethanol.  This is not a topic for this project.  Here more demanding fermtation processes are the scope, and hence further purification of the sugars are needed.  Lignosulfonates will be converted to aromatics by catalytic conver sion (Haldor-Topsøe). Chemicals and materials will be produced at demo-scale to demonstrate the usefulness in applications.

PES BBI Biochemicals and materials

Insekter kan sikre fremtidens fiskefôr.
I AquaFly har vi undersøkt om insekt kan være en trygg og sunn ingrediens for fremtidens fôr til laks. 
Prosjektet har sett på om man kan skreddersy insektmel som ingrediens i et bærekraftig fôr som dekker oppdrettslaksens ernæringsbehov og sikrer produksjon av en robust fisk.  De marine omega-3 fettsyrene  EPA og DHA er sentralt for fiskens helse, og et mål i prosjektet var å optimalisere sammensetningen av fettsyrer, slik at fett fra insekt kan bidra til laksens behov for omega-3. Mens det er mulig for insektlarver å akkumulere omega-3 fra fôret, nivåene blir ikke høyere enn 7 prosent av insekt fettet.
I dag produseres insektmel fra larvene til melorm (Tenebrio molitor) og svart soldatflue (Hermetia illucens; BSF) som har en godt egnet proteinsammensetning for laks. I AquaFly har vi undersøkt hvordan fremmedstoffer fra organiske reststrømmer blir overført til insektene og videre til laks. We har også sett på bærekraftaspekter relatert til bruk av insekter i laksefôr, både i et miljømessig, sosialt og økonomisk perspektiv
I løpet av prosjektets første år har NIFES i samarbeid med NIBIO og Nasjonalt universitet i Irland Galway samlet inn ulike arter av tang og tare. Disse prøvene er analysert for sammensetning av næringsstoff og uønskede stoff ved NIFES, og insektfôringsforsøk er gjennomført med både svart soldatflue (BSF) ved Protix Biosystems BV i Nederland og tangflue (KF) ved Universitetet i Stirling, UK. Vi fant at BSF kan vokse og leve på en diett som består av 100% oppmalt tang, men veksten av larvene ble redusert når innblanding av tang var over 60% av insektmaten. Høyere innblanding av tang gir høyere mengde omega-3 i form av EPA i larvene. Både BSF og KF som har spist tang inneholder EPA, men ikke DHA. Høyere EPA nivå i insektmaten resulterte i høyere nivå av EPA i insektlarvenes fett. Det samme er tilfelle for mineralene jod, kadmium og arsen som alle akkumulerte i insektene i en dose-respons sammenheng.
En ferskvannsfôringsforsøk ble gjennomført hos forskningsfasiliteter av EWOS i Dirdal. En standard diett som inneholder fiskemel og soyaproteinkonsentrat (50:50) og fiskeolje og vegetabilsk olje (33:66) ble fôret til kontrollgruppen. Eksperimentelle dietter ble formulert hvor 85% av proteinet ble erstattet med insekt-protein og / eller all vegetabilsk olje ble erstattet med insekt olje. Dette resulterte i dietter med opptil 65% inkludering av insekter. Etter 8 uker med fôring fant vi ingen forskjell på vekst, kroppslengde, forfaktor, kondisjonsfaktor eller fôropptak mellom de forskjellige grupper. Den hepatosomatiske indeksen og viscerosomatiske indeksen var høyere i fisk fôret met insektmel enn i kontroll gruppen, på grunn av en høyere fettinnhold. Tarmhelse ble ikke påvirket av høye nivåer insektmel i dietten til ferskvannslaks.
Et sjøvannsforsøk har vært utført hos Gildeskål Forskningsstasjon (GIFAS) i Inndyr. I dette forsøk har vi gradvis byttet ut fiskemel (FM) med insektsmel (IM). Et referansediet med en kombinasjon av FM og vegetabilsk protein og fiskeolje (FO) og vegetabilsk olje (VO) ble fôret til kontrollgruppen. Tre eksperimentelle dietter ble formulert hvor 33, 66 og 100% av FM er erstattet av IM. Laks ble fôret fra 1.2 kg opptil slaktvekt (4-4.5 kg). Fiskemel erstatning med insektmel hadde ingen påvirkning på fordøyelighet av protein, fett, aminosyrer eller fettsyrer eller fôrfaktor og vekst.  Et smakstest utføret av NOFIMA visste ingen forskjeller mellom fisk fra de forskjellige grupper. 
Et bærekraftanalyse (miljømessig, sosialt og økonomisk) ble utført av NIBIO, Universitet i Bergen og Autonomous University of Barcelona. Mulige organiske reststrømmer i Norge som kan brukes av insektindustrien ble kartlagt av NIBIO. Dessuten har ulike scenarier blitt modellert der bærekraftigheten av insektsmel ble sammenlignet med andre alternativer. Resultatene av disse studiene vil bli publisert i 2019.

The purpose of AquaFly is to develop and utilize novel safe and healthy raw materials not used directly for food as ingredients for salmon feed that contributes to the goal of a sustainable aquaculture. Insects are outstandingly powerful organisms that ha ve the ability to upgrade less favorable organic resources to highly nutritious feed ingredients. The potential for insect meal as a suitable protein source for Atlantic salmon has been demonstrated by NIFES. AquaFly aims to develop novel insect meal and  oil ingredients for Atlantic salmon diets contributing with essential nutrients to sustain fish health and welfare. To achieve this goal, tailoring of insect meal nutrient composition towards Atlantic salmon nutrient requirements, such as marine omega-3 f atty acids, is required. 
All raw materials contribute with undesirable substances, and AquaFly will monitor the undesirable substances including pathogens in the whole production chain from insect feed to fish fillet. Particularly, arsenic and cadmium co ncentrations is a challenge in some macro algae, and increased knowledge of the transfer efficiency from waste stream to insects to feed ingredients to fish fillet is necessary for evaluating macro algae and tunicate waste as relevant substrates for insec t lipid and protein production. 
The most promising macro algae and tunicate will be selected as insect feed based availability from wild stocks and aquaculture, nutrient composition and concentrations of undesirable components. AquaFly will increase know ledge of the potential of a new insect species, Kelp fly, for commercial fish feed ingredient production. 
Main AquaFly end points to assess the potential of insect raw materials for Atlantic salmon are the impact of maximum inclusion of insect protein an d lipids on production of robust fish, feasibility of insect ingredients as an industry for aquaculture, and sustainability in a broad sense, as well as ethical aspects of insects in the seafood production Chain

Insects as natural feed ingredients for sustainable salmon farming

Our project is driven by a commercial need which we see as a significant opportunity to ourselves and our current and our partner(s).

We have patents and trade secrets that cover the ASIC technology. 

The key features of the GammaVision project are: 

( 1)Stand-off localization and isotope identification of gamma radiation sources up to 9MeV;
(2)The highest reported energy resolution for room temperature gamma ray detectors of better than 0.4% at the 662keV Cesium line;
(3)Single person portable and batt ery operated, no need for bulky cryogenic cooling or expertise in radiation detection by the user;
(4)No heavy lead collimator leading to orders of magnitude increased sensitivity by electronic collimation using the Compton scatter principle combined with  a coded aperture for lower energies. 

There is presently no product in the market that offers the combination of portability, ruggedness, energy and spatial resolution of the proposed device.

This project aims to secure initial funding for developing RAd, a product idea that combines Corporate Social Responsibility with Advertisement, by allowing us to learn about, apply, and successfully see granted approval by the new Horizon 2020 dedicated  SME instrument.

The RAd product idea was born within Mediarena's "Create new models for digital advertisement" national media hackathon. The idea was the winner for Bergen and got significant praise and interest from the national jury, composed of repres entatives from TV2, Bergens Tidende and MediArena. "This is a very exciting way of thinking about social responsibility, both for advertisers and media players. It will link local actors closer to the media and will be unique compared to the competition a broad", said the jury's statement. With this project, we will learn about the new SME Instrument, study in detail its requirem ents, look for advice from the competent entities and national representatives, learn about the application process and success criteria, and write an application for the RAd project accordingly.

RAd (Responsible Advertisement) -  Application for SME Instrument Phase 1

Our project is driven by a commercial need which we see as a significant opportunity to ourselves, our current and perspective partners in the European airport security industry. In addition, the successful project should open global airport security mark et to us.

We would like to propose a novel 3D-SAFEAIR approach to high-throughput millimeter wave screening which should allow such real-time screening. We propose to use a number of mm-wave transmitters and holographic receivers to cover an area where p eople are moving. The equipment will be positioned in a way to image from different angles. The acquired images are processed either in the capturing device or in a central location to identify possible objects of threat. 

3D-SAFEAIR will offer the abili ty to scan multiple persons at the real time (moving with the speed of up to 4 km/hr) virtually eliminating airport security queues and this will be our unique selling point.

Novel safe and rapid passenger and airport terminal scanner

We want to develop and test a sofa for persons with memory decline which creates an augmented reality, tailor-made. The functionality is based on sensor technology embedded in tangibles for evoking of content. 
Tangibles can be the sofa itself (sitting po sition), cushions, or objects on the table. Sitting in a certain position, pushing the cushion(s) or touching/bending the artefacts, fire content e.g. on a large HDTV screen or a tablet -- all depending on the user's preferences and abilities. 
Content ma y be music, series of photo, film, TV series, or combinations of these. The content is created and administered by the carers who know the user well, and have detailed knowledge of his/her preferences and interests. 
The motivation behind this approach is  well-being, stimuli for cognitive "training", or simply happiness.

SENSO - Sensing Sofa

We will aim at conducting research on different therapeutic approaches, especially around Alzheimer's disease and horticulture. Also, the idea of combining it with music therapy very interesting. We would propose to compare different alternative therapies  in order to determine their respective effectiveness, also taking into account the role of external and internal determinants of mental health (other diseases and socio-economic aspects, for instance). 
Following research questions are essential in the p roject:
- Which method has the greatest impact on the wellbeing of persons with dementia?
- What can be done with the "new" methods in order to increase their impact?

Comparison of therapies for wellbeing of persons with dementia

RESMAN er en teknologibedrift som siden oppstart i 2005 har utviklet en ny teknologi for monitorering av innstrømning i oljebrønner.   Teknologien er trådløs, risikofri og kost-effektiv og er basert på intelligente og miljøvennlige, kjemiske sporstoffer.  Per idag finnes det systemer for monitorering av vann og olje innenfor begrenset temperaturområde og disse løsningene fungerer ikke for monitorering av gass. Det har vært en økende etterspørsel etter løsninger for å overvåke gassfase, enten i rene gassbrø nner eller i brønner med multifase strømning. Gjennom kontakt med operatører og forskningsinstitutt i Brasil og Norge har vi identifisert et markedspotensial for å utvikle systemer som også kan benyttes for overvåke gass. I motsetning til monitorering av  olje eller vann produksjon, er det oftest større utfordringer knyttet til høyere temperaturer, prøvetaking og analyse. Prøvene / fasene kan variere og er ikke nødvendigvis klart definerte gjennom /under de ulike produksjonstrinnene  (gass, kondensat," den se"  gass).  Alle data og potensielle løsninger som utvikles i et slikt prosjekt, vil kunne ha potensial til å utnyttes for miljøovervåking i forbindelse med  "shale gas" / grunnvannsproblematikk. Det finnes i dag sporstoffer for merking av gassfase på ma rkedet, hovedsakelig benyttet for brønn-til-brønn monitorering, men mange av disse er på gassform ved normal trykk og temperatur og er dermed vanskelig å implementere i en produsent for kontrollert frigivelse. Et permanent trådløst monitoreringssystem for  gass basert på frigivelse av kjemiske forbindelser vil kreve utvikling av nye  materialer og spesialdesignet utstyr for eksperimentelt arbeid. Utarbeidelse av planer for dette prosjektet vil være tidkrevende og komplekst, og det vil være nødvendig for RE SMAN å få støtte til å dekke det arbeidet som SINTEF og RESMAN må gjøre både i Norge og i Brasil for å kunne prioritere dette nå. I forhold til programplanene for Petromaks2 har prosjektet relevans for Tema 3.

Permanent wireless monitoring of gas in producers

The overall objective of the envisaged BRUSHCLEANER project is to develop and test an innovative and fully automated environmentally-friendly paintbrush cleaner. The project is responding to the growing demand for compact and environmentally sound solutio ns in the paint and construction industries to reduce waste generation and limit the use of volatile organic solvents (VOCs). 
R&D challenges:
For the project to be realised, a number of scientific and technical barriers which goes beyond current state-of -the art within automated brush-cleaning solutions will have to be overcome:
-Cleaning chamber versatility: The versatility of painting methods requires a cleaning chamber that is adapted to allow highly effective cleaning of a variety of paintbrush and r oller types. The BRUSHCLEANER project will conduct testing and prototyping to optimise chamber design efficiency. This will including careful design of a brushless motor system.
-Cleaning solution usage: BRUSHCLEANER intends to limit the requirements for  cleaning solution to a low volume thus limiting resource requirements. To achieve this, a new waste solvent storage and recycling system must be developed and implemented and this design specification must also be central in the testing and prototyping of  the cleaning chamber.
-Waste management: The increasingly strict emission standards and corresponding costs in waste disposal requires BRUSHCLEANER to include a highly effective waste system. A combination of mechanical and chemical filtration is envisio ned with an automated system for handling filtration cake build-up. This filtration system will also be central in allowing efficient solvent recirculation and must have sufficient capacity to meet the cleaning needs from large-scale painting/construction  projects.
-A combined/integrated system: The cleaning chamber, brushless motor, waste storage and filtrations components must be integrated and the aim of providing a compact system (miniaturization, components etc

PES to C-SOL for development of Eurostars project

This project will utilize a new electron capture process through development of a higly reactive nano material with superabundandt hydrogen vacancies that will be utilized in a novel reactor in a electron capture process that can operate at a COP of 15 wi th less hydrogen, less material and at 4-500 deg C for 6 months withouth refuelling.
 
The SAV material is activated at specific temperatures, which could be used for closed loop control in catalytic processes. A novel hydrogen cluster material and reacto r that utilizing hydrogen interactions with nano materials will be developed to produce heat (e.g., for a water heater, heat pump booster) and/or electricity using a sterling engine or thermo electric generator. The cell  will typically maintain a ~400 to  500°C core temperature with 2 kg nanomaterial for ~6 months. The forecasted COP is 12-15, based on preliminary calculations, comparable to standard heat pumps with a COP 3 to 4,5. This heat-releasing interaction occurs in the surface and subsurface nanos tructures in hydrogen cluster sites of specially designed nanomaterials. Nano material development during the past two years in Norrønts advanced nano laboratory (Røyken, Norway) has shown high temperature reactions in nanomaterial with high reproducibili ty. Thus, a material pathway mechanism is in place that needs further research and development and theoretical investigation (e.g., optimizing combinations of nanomaterial, gas, pressure, temperature,potensial and material alloys). 

This research project  will involve researchers from different parts of the world; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oslo, University of Missouri, University of Illinois, The George Washington University, France, and the National Academy of Sciences in Kiev.  Statoil ASA will have a observation role and review the technology for future investment. This will be the hydrogen technology for future use in transportation.

Lattice assisted nano reactions using superabundandt hydrogen vacancy storage clusters

Det tas det sikte på å etablere prosjekt i utlysningen SST.2013.1-3. ERA-NET Plus "Advanced systems, materials and techniques for next generation infrastructure"

Formålet med prosjektet som skal etableres er å utvikle en innovativ overvåkningsteknologi m ed basis i bruk av utplasserte selvforsynende elektromekaniske enheter som registrere uregelmessigheter i vibrasjonsmønsteret til veginfrastruktur. 

Grunnlaget for innovasjonen er etablering av de nødvendige forutsetningene om overvåkningsteknologien, sa mt innovativ bruk av mekatronikk i kombinasjon med livsløpsvurdering av teknologiens miljøbelastning. 

Prosjektet vil også utforske kombinasjoner av flere typer teknologivalg for å optimalisere systemet med hensyn til minimal miljøbelastning fra bl.a. br uk av edelmetaller. 

Sikringen av miljømessige gunstige valg i utviklingen vil bli gjort  gjennom livsløpsvurdering (LCA).

Infravation MOLONNAME

Prosjektets hovedmålsetning er å styrke kunnskapsgrunnlaget og metodikken for avl av oppdrettslaks opp mot økt robusthet og ytelse. Mens tradisjonell avl av laks er i stor grad basert på informasjon innhentet i ferskvannsfasen, ved slaktestørrelse og fra kontrollerte sykdomstester, har BEHAVEGENES innhentet vekstinformasjon underveis i hele produksjonssyklus, også i sjøfasen, og undersøkt fiskens atferd og miljøpreferanser som potensielle avlsmål. Ved bruk av PIT-merking fra 20 g fiskestørrelse, har vi fulgt individuell vekst, og registrert hvor fisken har valgt å posisjonere seg både i kar og merdvolumet ved hjelp av antenner som leser av fiskens ID når den svømmer forbi. Prosjektets mest omfattende eksperiment var med oppdrettslaks av utvalgt genetikk (6000 fisk fra to stammer fordelt på 60 familiegrupper). 
Data for fiskestørrelse ved gjentatte målinger er benyttet til å estimere arvegrader for størrelse og vekst, hvor arvegrader for slaktestørrelse var, som forventet, høy. Den genetiske sammenhengen mellom vekst i ulike perioder av sjøfasen for høstutsatt smolt er dog interessant: Det var ingen signifikant sammenheng mellom vekst første sommer i sjø (4 -11 måneder etter utsett) og andre vinter i sjø (11-16 måneder/slakt etter utsett). Med andre ord, fisken har genetisk ulike vekstkurver. Praktisk sett tilsier dette at avl for spesifikke produksjonsstrategier er mulig, men dette stiller krav til mer tidsrettet informasjons-innhenting i avlsprogrammer. Fiskens svømmedyp i merd viser forskjell mellom familier, hvor preferansen for svømmedyp i seg selv var sterkere enn å følge variasjoner i dybdeavhengig temperatur; samme familier posisjonerte seg relativt sett dypt/grunt både vår og høst. Beregning av arvbarhet for egenskapen svømmedyp viser periodevis moderate til høye arvegrader, hvor betydning av fiskens størrelse er underordnet. Størrelse hadde dog en generell sammenheng med hvor tidlig individene søkte mot overflaten utover våren (et halvt år etter utsett i sjø), samt at familienes vekstrate viste sammenheng med svømmedyp over siste halvår i sjøen. At det er funnet familieforskjeller for en høyst relevant atferd som svømmedyps-preferanse i moderne avlsprogrammer, peker mot høy fleksibilitet som særlig er av interesse for genetikk tilpasset nye oppdrettsteknologier. Analyser av helgenom-sekvensering av 360 individer (kontraster både avhengig og uavhengig av familie) som viste særpreg i svømmedyp og/eller vekstmønster vil bli ferdigstilt i 2018. Det forventes ny innsikt i den genetiske bakgrunnen for de komplekse egenskapene som vekst og atferd representerer, og hvor vidt disse kan benyttes som avlsmarkører for laks.
Prosjektets andre arbeidspakke omhandler epigenetiske effekter av miljøet laks opplever i ferskvannsfasen, og hvordan dette uttrykkes i vekst, atferd og stress-sensitivitet gjennom en vanlig lakseproduksjon. Med andre ord, hvor vidt miljøet skaper forandringer i genmaterialet som ikke direkte omfatter DNA sekvensen, og om miljømessige utfordringer virker stimulerende eller nedbrytende for fremtidig ytelse og velferd. Til formålet ble laks av lik genetikk (kloner) benyttet for å unngå effekter av genetisk variasjon mellom individene. Gjennom ferskvannsfasen (fra 3g størrelse) ble ulike grupper gitt ulike miljøbehandlinger: Normale vilkår (Kontroll), daglig nedtapping av vann i kar (Gjentatt stress), variasjoner i vannstrømstyrke (Fysisk Trening) og temperatur-fluktuasjoner (Temperatur) hver tolvte time (9 og 15°C, andre grupper stabilt på 12°C). Fisken ble satt ut i en felles merd i sjø. Gjennom ferskvannsfasen var veksten redusert for Gjentatt stresset fisk, mens Trening gav en mild positiv effekt. Etter 5 mnd. av sjøfasen var behandlingsgruppene av temmelig lik størrelse, og fisk fra alle gruppene viste en adekvat evne til å respondere på nytt akutt stress. Overraskende var at gruppen som ble gitt Trening gjennom ferskvannsfasen viste betydelig økt individuell variasjon i vekst og høy dødelighet gjennom siste året av sjøfasen. Kontrollen viste i snitt høyest slaktevekt (5.7 kg), mens snittvekt i gruppene henholdsvis gitt Temperatur-fluktuasjoner, Gjentatt stress og Trening var 3, 8 og 13% lavere. Fiskens svømmedyp, som registrert i PIT-antenner, viste at særlig fisk som opplevde Temperatur-fluktuasjoner og til dels Trenings-gruppen hadde ulike dybdepreferanser enn Kontrollen over første halvår i sjø. Dette kan forklare et forhøyet lusepåslag hos temperaturfisken som målt etter 3 måneder etter utsett. Helhetlig viser resultatene på ytelse og atferd at tidlig miljø kan ha sterke langtidseffekter, og markerer dermed behovet for å undersøke behandlingseffekter i et fullt produksjonsperspektiv og ikke bare i tiden straks etter behandling. Stor individuell variasjon i størrelse på tross av at fiskene var genetisk identiske (kloner) viser også store epigenetiske effekter innen grupper. Resultater for epigenetiske analyser for metylering av DNA vil ferdigstilles i 2018.

The main aim of the project is to advance our understanding of the concept of robustness in farmed fish so that robustness traits can be implemented in on-going breeding regimes. We want to determine why some farmed salmon are more robust and perform bett er than others, and to determine if these performance related traits are heritable, and if we can find genomic markers for these. So far, selective breeding has been mainly based on production performance characteristics collected at the end of the produc tion cycle. We do, however, not know why the best performing families are successful. Both the loci and the molecular pathways responding to such positive selection are largely unknown. 

Until now, technologies to observe and identify a large number of i ndividuals under full scale farming conditions have been lacking, thus little is known regarding why, how, and when the best performing fish acquire their performance traits. This project is a collaboration between experts in the principles of animal bree ding and genomics, integrative (whole animal) biology, and fish behavior monitoring methods. The consortium holds excellent technical facilities and a large number of selected salmon families, as well  an ongoing production of double haploids and cloned f ish groups. We will utilize a set of novel methods developed by the project consortium, including newly developed technology to collect frequent estimates of individual size and spatial position in tanks and cages and an automatic profiling system that co llects and processes water quality data. Heritability of a range of new traits will be calculated, and massive parallel sequencing to search for genomic markers for the performance-related phenotypic traits and for possible epigenetic effects will be perf ormed.

Behavioural and genomic characteristics  of  selected farmed salmon families related to robustness, welfare and performance

The market for wireless connectivity in-between consumer electronics is entirely based on WiFi. A group of companies under the lead of IBSENtelecom will disrupt this market with the introduction of LiFi (Light Fidelity): high-speed wireless data transmiss ion based on laser-supported infrared signals. The group comprises companies representing the entire value chain of the product. Contacts to future customers are established already. We will build up production in Europe to serve a worldwide multi-billion -unit market.

LiFi technology is faster, consumes less energy, is more secure and causes no interference issues or health threats, compared to WiFi. Planned is the LiFi-router, a multi-connectivity device with the following properties:

- Effective data  rate: 1 Gbps (2Gbps optionally)
- Range: 10m to 20m
- Point-2-multipoint
- Connectivity: Ethernet, USB3.0 + HDMI
- Power supply: via data connection
- Power consumption: below ½ W

Wireless data transmission is based on optical line-of-sight connectivity  of at least two devices, which can be connected via cable to Internet, server, PC or any other modern electronic device. A LiFi-router can be installed as network, but also put as dongle on the table. LiFi is an exciting novelty for users.

3.	Oppgaver
eStrokeCar e prosjektet vil ha som målsetning å løse følgende oppgaver:
I.	Sunnaas manuelle oppfølgingsmetode, målplan, for slagpasienter: Det skal utvikles en digital modell for å erstatte manuell metode. Det er foreslått at det blir utarbeidet standard treningsmal er for de mest vanlige øvelsene. Som igjen blir satt sammen til en helhetlig standardisert planstrukturer som grunnlag for individuelle mål- planer for den enkelte. 
Progresjon/resultater av treningen blir fulgt opp ved bruk av 3D kamera. Basert på algori tmer mellom initial status, mål-plan og progresjon basert på treningsøvelser vil det dannes sammenlignings-grunnlag for både behandler og den enkelte pasient som skal se sine resultater, - ta ansvar for sin egenutvikling, og i motsatt tilfelle, at behandl eren kan agere i tide.
II.	Sunnaas oppfølging for spesifikk gruppe av afasi pasienter; Det skal utvikles digital treningsprogram for den delen av afasipasienter som kan arbeide selvstendig basert på de metoder som er blitt utviklet av logopedene på Sunnaa s.
III.	Sunnaas oppfølging av pasienter hjemme: Det har vært benyttet video i oppfølging av pasienter hjemme, - denne tjeneste er tenkt å bli videreutviklet for å danne muligheter for 1:1 møter mellom behandler og pasient, samt én til mange som et forum/  «community» som ledes av en fagperson, samt evt. demografiske grupper/ «communities» på selvstendig grunnlag.

Solution for support and training of stroke patients at home in relation to therapist

Parking space management is critical in modern societies. This valuable resource must be managed such that the needs of both community inhabitants, commuters and local businesses are met. Parking space management is also essential in the implementation of  community policies related to circulation, use of public transport and pollution.  One obvious bottleneck in their use is the entering and leaving of the parking facilities. This requires a number of steps such as obtaining a ticket, passing boom gates a nd paying at a pay station. This is time consuming, user unfriendly and requires large amounts of expensive and maintenance intensive equipment. 

An alternative to this paradigm is the use of cameras that identify cars entering and leaving a parking faci lity based on reading their license plates. With this paradigm, parking becomes barrier free. This is very user friendly, efficient and removes the need for space consuming expensive hardware such as
payment machines and gating solutions.

The aim of the  overall project is the development of a high quality, easily installable license plate reading camera with a very low cost. This will enable a business model based on providing the required cameras to parking house operators free of charge thus facilitati ng market acceptance. Revenue comes from a per-parking transaction fee. 

This is challenging for several reasons:

1) The reading of the license plates is difficult.  Lumex Traffic Solutions AS has developed a license plate reading software that will be  bundled with the camera.  This software will be further developed and adapted to use in the parking scenario.
2) Making the license plate reading camera at an acceptably low price point is very challenging.  We aim at making a camera that requires a minim um of installation, basically only local power is needed.  This is an additional complication.
3) Finally, we need to develop the supporting business model and anchor it with end users.

Low cost free flow parking camera for massive deployment: PARCAM

The aim of current project is to develop project concept and proposal for Horizon 2020  call H2020-SMEINST-1-2014 with specific topic Topic: Open Disruptive Innovation Scheme (implemented through the SME instrument) with title ICT-37-2014-1. European market validation of a disruptive ICT based tele-health platform supporting patient empowerment and self-management

The aim of current project is to develop project concept and proposal for Horizon 2020  call H2020-SMEINST-1-2014 with specific topic Topic: Clinical research for the validation of biomarkers and/or diagnostic medical devices. The summary of EU project is  provided in the attachment.

Continuous Diaphragm Monitoring to diagnose respiratory disorders and clinically validate enhanced weaning of ventilated patients

The objectives will be achieved through a holistic management tool based on the FACT (Find, Analyse, Classify, Treat) principle, as described briefly in the following:
 
Find - Improved techniques for the assessment of existing assets will be developed. 
 Analyse - Advanced probabilistic models fed by performance statistics and using databases controlled by an information management system will be used to determine the level of safety of individual assets. 
Classify - The performance models will allow a st ep-change in risk assessment, moving from the current subjective (qualitative) basis to become fundamentally based on quantifiable data.
Treat - A decision support tool will take risk ratings and assess the impact of proposed work on the traffic flow and  whole life cycle of the network.

DESTination RAIL will provide significant impact in relation to the objectives of the work programme, namely, 
i) It will reduce the cost of investment by using the IMS (Information Management System) to manage the networ k, 
ii) Monitoring and real-times analyses will prevent unnecessary line restrictions and closures, 
iii) Lowering maintenance costs by optimising interventions in the life cycle of the asset, 
iv) Optimising traffic flow in the network.
