Smart Grid Real-time Surveillance & operation System for power grid operators

Electric power consumption within the EU will increase by 100% the next 20 years with 20% generated by renewable energy sources. The EU has established core policy objectives on Energy and emphasized that the electrical grid must enable to deliver electrical power at the right time and with high reliability of the electrical network at all time. The distribution electrical network is operated by the Distribution System Operators (DSOs) who operates, maintain and develop this network and connected systems in a given area and it amounts to 80% of the total power supply networks in Europe. This network has large variations in voltage and in the load on the power lines, and for a large part constitutes of old infrastructure that are exposed to both material degradation and challenges from interaction with renewable energy sources. Failure in the electricity distribution may lead to electricity outages that have enormous impacts on society with significant health and safety risks for consumers as well as for grid operators. The SeAGRaSS system outlined in this proposal aims at giving the electrical grid system operators (DSOs and TSOs) a fully-functional commercial system which will provide real-time, continuous 24/7 condition monitoring and remote detection of overhead power transmission line integrity. This will create a new paradigm in preventative maintenance and enhance the reliability of the grid. The prime targeted clients for the SeAGRaSS system are DSOs and TSOs. There are close to 10.000 DSOs and TSOs in Europe and their motivation to invest in the SeAGRaSS system will come from the huge cost savings they achieve. Markets and Markets (M&M) estimates the total Smart Grid Software and equipment market will be €50.65 Bn in 2022. We assume sales of minimum €300 Mn for the SeAGRaSS system (Year 5). In addition comes annual fees to support the cloud based solutions and software systems that gives DSOs and TSOs full overview real-time over the failure situation.
