Prosjektetableringsstøtte: FIre Protection and SAFEty in tunnels

The ambition of the FIPSafe project is to bring to market a new fire, water and frost protection solution that provide high-level protection for people and reduce the risk of structural damage in tunnels. The issue of fire safety in road, rail, and mass transit tunnels has gained high visibility in Europe following a series of dramatic incidents and fires which led to human casualties, major structural damages, and disruptions of the transport system with hard felt impact on regional economies. The Norwegian company Foamrox AS specialises in safety solutions in tunnels. The company has developed a new fire, water and frost protection material, Foamrox, which has proven capacity to replace today's concrete elements and flammable Polyethylene Foam in tunnels. Foamrox is a material combination consisting of polyurea and foam glass. The recycled blocks of foam glass insulation elements are spray coated with recyclable polyuria. The material combination is unique, and developed products are a cost effective and a sustainable alternative to concrete elements and constructions. The overarching outcome of this innovation business project is to introduce a safer, more robust, competitive and sustainable alternative to today's tunnel constructions, ensuring the safety and health of road users and tunnel workers when in operation. The FIPSafe project will meet and exceed the organisational and infrastructure requirements defined in Directive 2004/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (29 April 2004) on minimum safety requirements for tunnels in the Trans-European Road Network, which addresses the specific safety concerns of long road tunnels (i.e. those longer than 500 metres).
