The GALION project aims at integrating and scaling up an already developed technology, which uses graphene for coating Al foils between the interface between the cathode and the AL surface. This technology, developed and demonstrated by Graphene Batteries AS, introduces a step change in LIBs by overcoming the certain shortcomings in the methods of battery production such as the application of binders and plasma method. The graphene coating of Al-foil as demonstrated is a) simple, low cost and scalable method for protection of the interface between the Al foil and the cathode, b) adds very small thickness compared to binders (<100nm), c) is transparent and compatible with battery production lines, d) is suitable for both water and NMP based anode/cathode slurry, e) has reduced interface resistance (Figure 2), f) enables ultra-fast cathode for >10C discharge (Figure 3). In this project, the graphene coated foil will be scaled up and implemeted in full size batteries in order to verify the technology.
