FORGETDIABETES will provide a radically new approach for the treatment of Type 1 Diabetes by developing a fully-implantable, fully-automated, physiological, immuno-optimized, fully-implantable, fully-automated personalized Bbionic Iinvisible Ppancreas (BIP) allowing to achieve optimal glucose control without intervention of the patient. BIP is a radically new approach for the optimal treatment of T1D exploiting physiological sites for glucose sensing and hormonal (insulin and glucagon) delivery. In addition, tThe invisibility of the bionic pancreas will make the system especially particularly appealing for adolescents, thus maximizing its psychological acceptance. BIP will completely free the subject of all interventions and consequent psychological burdens, thus allowing the patient to forget her/his pathology and have a normal life. New paradigm: FORGETDIABETES will surpass the current paradigms because it is: - fully-implantable pump with oral hormone refill and long-lasting calibration-free glucose sensor; - physiological, thanks to the ip hormone delivery and glucose sensing route which allow optimal glucose control, mimicking the physiological meal-related bi-phasic insulin secretion; - fully-automated, thanks to highly flexible ip insulin delivery requiring no intervention by the patient (even in correspondence to meals, exercise) and thanks to the wireless connection between ip pump (hosting the algorithm) and ip glucose sensor; - personalized, thanks to controller tuned to meet each individual’s needs and made adaptive in response to metabolic changes; - immuno-optimized, thanks to surface coating strategy employing advanced materials and biochemical means to prevent immunological foreign body response (e.g. coating with personalized receptor proteins). - invisible, T1D subjects are not constantly reminded of their disease. With the new paradigm, T1D subjects will have normal life conditions just like everybody else.
