Virtual reality and Project management in the development of less complex commercial buildings

The majority of construction projects of commercial buildings are facing major challenges in the construction process, and are characterized by errors, delays, cost overruns and conflicts. Research done on building projects by RIF (Rådgivende Ingeniørers Forening) and SINTEF indicate that much of the blame for these challenges is lacking and ineffective coordination between the various players in the project, for example between project managers and craftsmen. These challenges have been solved by complex and advanced project management tools (traditional software) for building processes, unfortunately this has not helped the problem, on the contrary. What characterizes these tools is that the utilization rate is extremely low because they require a particularly level of expertise in the use of advanced IT tools. In addition, most of these tools rely on desktop PCs / Macs due to processor power requirements. Artisans /craftsmen are the group that is most often blamed for the challenges of the construction process, and are often those who lack the necessary IT expertise to be able to use existing project management tools, and in addition have little access to desktop PCs when executing assignments? We believe this is much of the reason for the utilization rate of project management tools among this group is almost zero. This requires that we re-think and work along the line of simplex solutions, that is, complex technology with a simple user interface. We believe that the solution lies in the VR technology and we want to develop a VR tool for use in building processes of less complex commercial buildings (VR based project management tools). The reason why we want to start with less complex business buildings is that the complexity of the project and the requirements for coordination and inclusive elements are lower, i.e., achievable within a reasonable time.
