K.G. Jebsen TREC - senter for tromboseforskning

Tildelt: kr 2,0 mill.

We aim to develop predictive models for personalized prevention and identify novel drug targets for tailored treatment by discovering new clinical risk factors, biomarkers and mechanisms in the pathogenesis of VTE. TREC is organized as a fully integrated center in translational medicine with multidirectional integration and complementary expertise in laboratory research, patient-oriented research, and population-based research. During the initial 4-year period of funding by Stiftelsen K.G. Jebsen, we have discovered several omics-derived genetic variants and proteins with potential to become novel predictive biomarkers of VTE. In addition, we have revealed a bidirectional association between arterial and venous thrombosis and estimated that 15% of the VTE events in the society can be attributed to arterial cardiovascular diseases. In this project, we will validate novel biomarkers and unravel molecular mechanisms of VTE (work package (WP) 1 ), functionally characterize the novel biomarkers of VTE and their respective molecular pathways in advanced in vitro and in vivo model systems (WP 2), and develop and validate comprehensive risk prediction models that identify Ml and stroke patients with high risk ofVTE. Today, no such risk prediction model exists.
