Arctic Aliens - Invertebrates Associated with Antropogenic Activity RiS ID: 11406

Tildelt: kr 24 997

The primary objective of this project is to survey the non-native invertebrate species diversity, abundance and distribution within Longyearbyen, and associated areas. The work shall assess the town through systematic transects, as well as specific sampling of 'hot spots' such as disturbed anthropogenic soils, dog yards, and areas associated with large amounts of human traffic (i.e. airport and harbour). This will be the first such survey in Longyearbyen, and comes off the back of the accidental import of pest aphid species to the town last year, and findings of alien invertebrates in soils found in Pyramiden and Barentsburg. This study will also survey the invertebrate fauna of non-native plants, in order to discern the affect that this alien hosts may have on both native and non-native invertebrates on Svalbard. This shall be the first such study on Svalbard.
