Unraveling the Paleozoic Northwest Passage: strike-slip motion in southwestern Svalbard, RiS ID:11410

Tildelt: kr 72 999

The central objective of this collaborative project between the University of Iowa, the Norwegian Polar Institute, and AGH-University of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland is to evaluate variations in the magnitude and timing of displacement on strike-slip faults in southwestern Svalbard. Field work in 2020 will entail detailed mapping, structural analysis and sample collecting across the Vimsodden-Kosibapasset Shear Zone in Wedel Jarlsberg Land where preliminary age data indicates multiple phases of deformation. Samples collected for combined microstructural and U/Pb-40Ar/39Ar analysis will establish a chronology for deformation in the shear zone. The results will allow more robust correlations with localities that have complex histories of strike-slip translation documented in the circum-Arctic region during the Paleozoic (e.g., Pearya terrane, northern Ellesmere Island).
