Beyonder, a Norwegian SME, is developing innovative power-battery concepts with a patented, highly transformative and sustainable activated carbon production technology. Beyonder will lead the planned project, which will focus on the development and demonstration of a hybrid and modular high-power storage system. This will combine LiC cell modules to provide high power with Li-ion cell modules to provide the required energy storage. All will be integrated in a flexible and effective storage solution. The overall management system will balance the use of the power and the energy modules to achieve maximum effectivity and lifetime of the system by utilizing the advantages of the two storage technologies. The project will involve a consortium consisting of Beyonder’s unique technology and expertise in battery development, and cross-cutting capabilities from energy companies and research institutes specialising in storage systems and equipment, electric and electronic systems as well as electrical grids and EV charging stations. The project is an ambitious endeavour that will face several R&D challenges, but will be well positioned to overcome these by ensuring a project consortium of technology leaders and experts. Major challenges include achieving high round cycle efficiency in the storage system to be developed, and creating an energy system that allows quick recharge for electrical vehicles without overloading the grid.
