HYDROPOWER REFUBRISHMENT UNDER SEDIMENT AND EVIRONMENTAL CONSTRAINTS IN MODERN ENERGY MARKETS - (HORIZON-CL5-2023-D3-02-09:)

HYDROSCENEis designed to support the EU to realize the Green Deal Target by 2030. The impact of the project will contribute to cutting down 50 to 55% of the greenhouse gas from the 1990 levels by 2030. This target will be achieved because beyond HYDROSCENEwill the European hydropower fleet provide sustainability and environmental security to hydropower production for a better interaction with non-intermittent energy sources. HYDROSCENE cases comprise existing hydro-power plants (e.g., three main case studies) in three different stages of refurbishment for increased hydro-power capacity, planning construction and adaption of recent refurbishment to enhance sustainability. The focus is on HPP from run-of-the river storage, small-to-large reservoir storage in addition to a pumped storage reservoir. The refurbishment of these cases needs to account for sediments, ecological issues and more, in a sustainable and economically optimal manner. A strong focus of the project lays on the balancing of the needs of sediment balance, biological conservation, and renewable energies. The aim of HYDROSCENE is not only improvement of HP generation by digitization but also enhancement of the actual state of ecology in rivers. The methodology involves smart monitoring to select the optimal refurbishment alternatives, optimization and validation of proposed set of solutions , establish and replicate the solution for larger target group. There are more than 15 partners involved from the private and public sector, research and industry to reach the excellence level of this call. The project consists of total 20 work packages (WP) grouped in 3 reporting periods (RP). The exploitation of HYDROSCENE results will be targeted in three different directions: i) commercial exploitation - as products or services ; ii) scientific exploitation and iii) technological exploitation model.
