The importance of observation error in reindeer population modelling (RiS ID 12376)

My project explores the intricate dynamics of Svalbard reindeer (R. t. platyrhynchus) populations in response to rapid climate change. Through fieldwork, including paired observations of various populations based in Reindalen, Adventdalen, and Ny-Ålesund, I aim to investigate the nuanced impacts and challenges of sampling error, assessed in calf-at-heel assignments during summer surveys. Utilizing mark-recapture data, the research aims to generate novel insights into effects on survival, fecundity, and overall population dynamics, addressing knowledge gaps in the responses of R. t. platyrhynchus. Fieldwork is imperative for building population models, especially given the unique environmental factors present on Svalbard. The emphasis on sampling error ensures accurate and reliable data collection, advancing species-species insights and contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the broader implications of climate change impacts on Arctic wildlife. Adherence to local regulations, minimal environmental impact, collaboration with monitoring programs, and safety protocols highlight the project's meticulous methodology.
