Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioural intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

Engineering carbon quantum dots for zinc ion hybrid capacitors

Zinc ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) integrate two energy storage mechanisms of battery-type electrode and capacitive electrode, bearing the advantages in energy density, power density, and safety. Until now, the cycle retention rate of ZIHC's capacity reported is still not more than 80%, restricting its development and commercial application severely. Focusing on the issue, the project aims at overcoming the limitation of traditional electrode materials and re-defining the designing concept to construct Carbon Quantum Dots (C-QDs) for ZIHCs. Advanced methods will be used to harvest carbon quantum dots from coal tar pitch (a sort of industrial solid castoff). The bulk sp2-carbon network, innumerable edge sites, profuse surface functional groups, and regular size ensures that as-synthesis C-QDs have high electrical conductivity, sufficient ion transport channels and rich adsorption sites. Moreover, the new concept of dynamic evolution is introduced for insight into the structure and interface failure of ZIHC's electrode. The interface-reconstruction mechanism and the attenuation model of capacity will be established for the first time. Further, the methods to strengthen structures of C-QD electrode will be developed based on a trade-off strategy. The ultimate goal is to improve the energy storage efficiency of ZIHCs by 20% and to increase their cycle performance more than 95% unprecedentedly. This research will develop long-running high performance ZIHCs, for contributing European energy storage industry. The ER will achieve abundant research experience and scientific skills from the project and the capability to launch her own research group in future.

IMProving User experience, Long-term sustainability and Services of EU-OPENSCREEN

EU-OPENSCREEN (EU-OS), the distributed European Research Infrastructure for Chemical Biology and early drug discovery, provides world-class services in high-throughput compound screening and medicinal chemistry to users from academia and industry. As one of the largest open-access initiative globally, EU-OPENSCREEN plays an increasingly important role in facilitating early stage drug discovery in Europe. It recently integrated fragment-based drug discovery and chemoproteomics as two new services, but the increasing complexity of modern drug discovery projects requires an even more comprehensive portfolio and integration of emerging technologies. To ensure that EU-OS continues to offer a comprehensive suite of relevant services and support a growing user community to conduct forefront research, IMPULSE will develop, validate and integrate new services in AI/ML, new chemical modalities, and innovative disease-relevant cell models combined with CRISPR-Cas9/RNAi-based genetic screening. IMPULSE will work towards the implementation of common operational and data standards to increase data reproducibility and FAIRness. Bespoke outreach and training activities will raise awareness among key user groups of its new services and advance operational excellence and reproducibility in pre-clinical drug discovery. New models for pre-competitive drug discovery with industry or charities, and growing ERIC member community will reinforce the sustainability and accessibility of EU-OPENSCREEN.

Aqua Research Infrastructure Services for the health and protection of our unique, oceans, seas and freshwater ecosystems

AQUARIUS will provide a highly comprehensive suite of integrated research infrastructures appropriate to addressing significant challenges for the long-term sustainability of our unique oceans, seas and freshwater ecosystems. For the first time, diverse research infrastructures will be combined to facilitate the work of researchers and key stakeholders focused on challenges and opportunities for both marine and freshwater systems. An impressive range of 57 research infrastructure services will be made available to include research vessels, mobile marine observation platforms, aircraft,  drones, satellite, sensors, fixed freshwater and marine observatories and test sites, experimental facilities, and sophisticated data infrastructures. AQUARIUS will support the development phase of the EU Mission to Restore our Ocean and waters by 2030, the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership, the European Green Deal, and international climate initiatives. It will also be an essential component in achieving the European Digital Twin of the Ocean and the UN Decade for Ocean Sciences. The needs of researchers will be met through a robust and transparent system of transnational access funding Calls, facilitated by centralised user-friendly access portal. The Call programme will be informed through stakeholder engagement and brokerage events. Projects to be selected for Access must convincingly integrate multiple infrastructures and contribute to the core policy objectives of Mission Ocean, that is, to protect and restore marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity; to prevent and eliminate pollution of our oceans, seas and waters; and to ensure a sustainable, carbon-neutral and circular blue economy. A thematic and geographic focus will be the hallmark of the proposed transnational Calls, aligning with the Lighthouse Regions, that is, the Baltic and the North Sea Basins, Black Sea, Atlantic/Arctic, and Mediterranean Sea along with their associated rivers.

EOSC-ENTRUST: A European Network of TRUSTed research environments

The mission of EOSC-ENTRUST is to create a European network of trusted research environments for sensitive data and to drive European interoperability by joint development of a common blueprint for federated data access and analysis. 
Countries and institutions have made significant investments in secure and trusted data environments to meet the need for research and policy-driven analysis of sensitive datasets such as people's health and socio-economic status, the habitats of vulnerable species and geo-spatial locations of protected sites. There are now a large number of such secure environments in operation - linked to national centres, individual organisations or specific research communities. This fragmented landscape poses challenges for both users and providers: researchers are faced with a large number of different systems and access procedures; providers need to manage federated access across multiple, potentially incompatible, technology and governance frameworks.
EOSC-ENTRUST brings together providers of operational Trusted Research Environments from 15 European countries with a shared goal to implement, validate and promote their capabilities through a common European framework using shared standards and common legal, operational and technical language. This blueprint for interoperability is anchored in the EOSC Interoperability Framework spanning the four dimensions of Legal, Organisational, Technical and Semantic interoperability. EOSC-ENTRUST has identified four driver projects covering Genomics, Clinical trials, Social science, and public-private partnerships to benchmark capabilities, inform blueprint design and demonstrate secure  data analysis using federated workflows.
Targeted outreach activities will expand this open network with further providers and develop policy papers and guidelines for the full range of stakeholders to create a long-term operational TRE framework within the European Open Science Cloud.


Providing research infrastructure services to support Next Generation EU

This four-year project will harness outputs from key social science RIs in Europe and other reliable sources to support the aims of the ‘Next Generation EU’ programme and to inform EU youth policy. Virtual access will be provided to the outputs through special installations (portals) developed during the project. The core of the proposal is a set of existing research ‘services’, which will be re-purposed and customised to focus directly on the five themes: Make it Green; Make it Digital; Make it Healthy; Make it Strong; and Make it Equal. 

For each area, the consortium will work collaboratively to produce seven sets of resources:

i)	A searchable inventory of relevant variables drawn from multiple cross-national datasets; 

ii)	Analytical summaries, suitable for policy makers and analysts new to the field, as well as interactive resources available through the project portal;

iii)	Harmonised and merged extracts from these datasets that reduce the burden on analysts and increase sample sizes;

iv)	New data collected through the ESS’s established CRONOS web panel infrastructure. Eleven countries will field five waves of the panel, each one dedicated to a NextGenEU theme. Free and rapid access to the data will be available through the CRONOS portal alongside analytical summaries;

v)	In-person and virtual deliberative forums with young people (aged 18-34) in four countries covering the five Next Generation EU’ themes;

vi)	An educational tool (E-NextGen) channelling our data for use in classrooms and by the general public;

vii)	Comprehensive training materials related to all project outputs.

From circumstance to choice:  Implications of the new genetics for social justice and health policy

Den økte produksjonen av CO2 som følge av den industrielle revolusjon har ført til en økende drivhuseffekt på jorden, som kan ha en ødeleggende effekt på klima og dyrestand. Grunnet et stadig økende energibehov så vil fossilt brennstoff fortsette å ha en viktig rolle I energiproduksjon I den forskuelige fremtid, som igjen vil føre til økende CO2 utslipp som følge av brenningen av fossilt brennstoff. Med tanke på det økende CO2-utslippet, så er avansert teknologi nødvendig for å begrense det frie CO2 utslippet I naturen. En muligteknologi for å håndtere CO2-utslipp er CCS (carbon capture and storage), eller karbonfangst på norsk. CCS egner seg spesielt for rensing av avgasser fra naturgassforbrenningsanlegg, og kan bli etterinstallert. I dette prosjektet er det blitt forsket på et CO2-fangst system for avgasser fra naturgassforbrenning, da naturgass tar over mer og mer fra tradisjonell kullkraft grunnet den lavere prisen på naturgas samt redusert CO2-utslipp. CO2-utslippet fra naturgassforbrenning er estimert til 5 volumprosent. Grunnet den lave volumprosenten så må absorbanten ha høy affinitet til CO2, som aminbaserte materialer har. CO2-scrubbingen I vannløslige alkanoaminer har blitt forsket på I over 50 år, men det er fortsatt problemer som må løses som den lave energieffektivetet, korrosjonen, oksidasjonen og tap av det aktive materialet. Med tanke på dette har vi utviklet et nytt solid sorbent basert på sekundær aminosilan med høy tetthet podet (kovalent bundet) på silika med et stort porevolum, for eksempel pore-utvidet MCM-41. Hovedtrekkene til det faste sorbenten er 1) høy stabilitet i nærvær av høy konsentrasjon av oksygen og CO2 i både sorpsjon og desorpsjon prosesser; 2) muliggjøre regenerering i ren CO2 i et temperaturområde på 120-140 oC; 3) høy kapasitet for CO2 -fangst i et bredt spekter av CO2 -trykk; 4) rask kinetikk for CO2 -adsorpsjon selv ved svært lave CO2 -trykk (<1 kPm). Prosessen med CO2-fangst i NGCC ble designet, og teknoøkonomisk evaluering ble utført. En høyere energieffektivitet og lave kostnader for CO2-fjerning ble oppnådd sammenlignet med den konvensjonelle MEA-adsorpsjonsprosessen. Prosessen med faste sorbenter fører til høy energieffektivitet, 55,9 % sammenlignet med 57,6 % uten CO2-fangst og 51,16 % med amin for NGCC-kraftverket.

In this project, we together with our industrial partner Fjell Technology Group (FTG), Norway aim to optimize the post-combustion CO2 capture where CO2 will be captured by novel polyethylenimine (PEI)/carbon low temperature spherical pellet as solid sorbents. It will be effectively integrated with the dual fluid bed reactor system and process to achieve 6-8% efficiency penalty and 25-30% cost reduction compared to current technologies. The current study includes development of chemically- and mechanically stable PEI/carbon spherical pellet as low temperature solid CO2 sorbents, 50 hour of continuous CO2 capture in a internally interconnected fluidized bed (IIFB) prototype reactor system, which is combination of bubbling bed and riser reactor, and complete- and integrated process simulation together with techno-economic evaluation. The chemically- and mechanically stable low temperature solid CO2 sorbents on will be developed by anchoring PEI into highly porous carbon spheres, with high CO2 capture capacity, fast kinetics and low adsorption heat. The novel IIFB reactor will effectively utilize the PEI/carbon spherical CO2 sorbents for continuous CO2 capture, thereby decreasing operating and initial investment cost. A process of natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) power plant with new integrated post CO2 capture will be designed and evaluated where the CO2 capture and regeneration are highly integrated in the process, and the development of low temperature solid CO2 sorbents and the new reactor are integrated in the process development, to achieve highest energy efficiency and low cost.

Low Temperature Post Combustion CO2 Capture Technology Using Solid Sorbents

Entering into the final year and approaching the end of the FME SUCCESS Centre, the partners have started preparing for the important milestone of summing up the Centre results. In this context, the SUCCESS Board and partners see great value in presenting all the Centre findings, but also wish to look beyond the status of the ongoing research and address issues concerning a future successful acceleration of CCS deployment. 
This has resulted in a more ambitious plan to organize an extended FME-SUCCESS final conference over two or three days, where the first day will address future perspectives of CCS in an international context. Day 2 will contain scientific presentations from SUCCESS partners on achieved results during the Centre period, followed by a day 3 with a workshop tentatively entitled "beyond FME-SUCCESS".
This application concerns the plans and funding of the first day of this Conference, with the working title: Future Perspectives on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Day 2 and 3 will be funded through FME SUCCESS funding.
There are many conferences on CCS focusing on the status of ongoing research and projects. However, a major challenge for global deployment of CCS is the lack of launching new commercial projects.
This conference therefore aims at looking beyond the status of CCS and bring to table a wider view on relevant and critical issues that are important to successful deployment and acceleration of CCS, including transnational and national policymaking, learnings from ongoing CCS investments and operations, strategic industry business perspectives and new key industry initiatives. This aligns with the mandate of CLIMIT, to develop technology and solutions that can significantly contribute to cost reductions and broad international deployment of CO2 capture and storage. The conference will emphasize drivers that give direction to and increase the pace of CCS technology development and implementation. 
Amini-workshop is planned  at Sensenet  as a follow-up of the Conference Day 1 and the results from this workshop will be compiled and summarized in a memo/report.

Conference on Future Perspectives on Carbon Capture and Storage

De største lagringsrelaterte utfordringene for akselerert bruk av CCS er kapasitet, kostnad og tillit. Pre-ACT var et industri-drevet forskningsprosjekt som adresserte disse utfordringene gjennom fokus på forbedrede strategier for overvåking og kontroll av poretrykk.
Pre-ACT utviklet metoder og anbefalinger for operasjonelle beslutninger baserte på poretrykk i reservoaret. Dette bidrar til et kostnadseffektivt system for reservoarovervåking som hjelper operatører å maksimere sikkerhet og lagringskapasitet. Equinor, Total, Shell og TAQA hadde en avgjørende rolle for å sikre relevansen til de verktøy og metoder som ble utviklet.

Pre-ACT-prosjektet startet i november 2017 med et kick-off-møte, inkludert et besøk på Svelvik Field Lab og en WP4-workshop med tittel "Learning from demonstration and pilots".
Det vitenskapelige arbeidet tok fart tidlig i 2018. Flere abstrakter ble sendt til GHGT-14. WP1 studerte, med hjalp fra OD, hvordan usikkerhet i forkastningsegenskaper påvirker trykkfordeling (ved Smeaheia). I WP2 samarbeidet SINTEF med GFZ om planene for eksperimenter ved Svelvik. Arbeid med en kvantitativ overvåkningsteknikk for trykk og metning resulterte i en ny metode som inkluderer usikkerhet. NORSAR undersøkte bruk av mikro-seismiske data fra Rousse og Ketzin. I samarbeid med NCCS testet SINTEF også en metode for optimering av geometri for geofysiske målinger og arbeidet deretter videre på temaet sammen med TNO i WP3. Equinor sammenstilte datapakker for Snøhvit og Smeaheia som ble brukt i prosjektet.
Våren 2018 deltok SINTEF, NORSAR og de norske industripartnerne i en Pre-ACT-workshop om overvåking og samsvar med modellering. En fortsettelse ble holdt under Pre-ACT's årsmøte i november med presentasjoner fra blant annet SINTEF og Equinor. Den norske delen av Pre-ACT-prosjektet presenterte i 2018 også ved CO2GeoNet Open Forum, Near Surface Geoscience og EAGE CO2 Geological Storage Workshop.
Under første halvdel av 2019 var fokus blant annet på å sluttføre studier på storskala trykkmodellering ved Smeaheia. Denne studien ble presentert under TCCS i juni 2019. Design av brønninstrumentering og utforming av eksperimentelle studier resulterte i at feltlabben ved Svelvik ble ferdigstilt og at Pre-ACT fikk gjennomført en stor injeksjonsstudie høsten 2019.
I 2019 ble en fransk matematikk-student involvert i arbeidet med "Bayesian rock physics inversion". Arbeidet ble presentert under Petroleum Geostatistics i september 2019. Pre-ACT presenterte også resultater under EAGE, SEG, TCCS-10, EAGE borehole workshop, EAGE International Conference on Faults and Top Seal og under CSLF technical group meeting.
Det ble under 2019 fokusert mer på å informere beslutningstakere og allmenheten om resultater fra Pre-ACT. Det ble i april holdt en første stakeholder-workshop i Trondheim med deltakere fra mange land. I oktober ble en lignende workshop arrangert i Brussel. I november 2019 hjalp Pre-ACT med å arrangere åpningsseremoni ved den nye feltlabben i Svelvik. I tillegg ble Pre-ACT's hjemmeside oppdatert med blant annet videomateriale som på en enkel måte beskriver Pre-ACT og vekten av CO2-håndtering.
Under 2020 konkluderte Pre-ACT pågående aktiviteter og fokuserte på formidling av resultater til alt fra eksterne (internasjonale) forskningsmiljøer til beslutningstakere. I tillegg til deltakelse ved Nordic Geological Winter Meeting, 8th EAGE Passive Seismic Workshop, 1st EAGE fibre-optic workshop og EGU, sendte prosjektet abstrakter til 82nd EAGE Conference & Exhibition og GHGT-15 (begge utsatte til etter prosjektets slut) og til First EAGE Geoscience in Energy Transition Conference. Det ble satset stort på en åpen webinarserie med de viktigste resultatene fra prosjektet i løpet av våren 2020. De seks webinarene hadde alle mellom 49-110 registrerte deltakere (til sammen 229 unike). Det ble også sendt inn mange vitenskapelige artikler, blant annet til Geophysics, Geophysical Prospecting og IJGGC.
Partnerne  var ved prosjektets slut enige om de viktigste norske resultatene: 1) studier av effekten av usikkerheter og heterogeniteter på reservoarmodellering før injeksjon 2) innovative metoder for kvantifikasjon av trykk og CO2-metning i reservoaret 3) instrumentering og eksperimentell kampanje ved Svelvik CO2 Field Lab 4) bidrag til utvikling av metode for beregning av samsvar mellom geofysiske observasjoner og reservoarmodeller 5) metode for optimert datainnsamling 6) studier på optimal timing for innkjøp av overvåkingsdata 7) casestudie ved Smeaheia 8) tre workshops med beslutningstakere (f.eks. i Brussel) og 9) webinarserien.

The main storage-related challenges for accelerated deployment of CCS are capacity, confidence and cost. Pre-ACT is an industry-driven research project with a strong focus on improving strategies for monitoring and management of pore pressure distribution to address these challenges.

Pre-ACT will develop pressure-driven decision support protocols (Pre-ACT Protocols) which will be a cost-efficient system for reservoir monitoring that helps the operator maximize CO2 storage capacity and quickly turn monitoring data into corrective action.
 
Pre-ACT has secured access to a wide and relevant set of monitoring data from key demonstration sites across the world to calibrate, verify and demonstrate the value of the pressure-driven decision support protocols created in Pre-ACT for specific challenges. The industrial partners in Pre-ACT (Statoil, TOTAL, Shell and TAQA) will be instrumental in securing the relevance and applicability of the tools and methodologies developed in the project and will bring their operational experience and perspective.

Pre-ACT comprises five technical work packages, designed to build the different elements in the pressure driven decision support protocols. WP1 deals with the development and demonstration of methods to model pressure build-up and distribution. WP2 and WP3 deal with development and demonstration of a modelling-monitoring loop for conformance assessment. Based on the compilation of a unique archive of existing and new data sets from relevant pilot and field sites, WP4 will derive recommendations for decision making procedures. In WP5, North Sea case studies will be carried out, demonstrating the value of the protocols developed in Pre-ACT. The project also includes first of a kind experiments at the ECCSEL Svelvik site.
Five countries with strong commitment to CCS are represented in the consortium: Norway, Germany, The Netherlands, UK and France. In addition, Pre-ACT has established a solid cooperation with US and Australia.

Pressure control and conformance management for safe and efficient CO2 storage - Accelerating CCS Technologies

Det søkes om arrangementsstøtte til gjennomføring av The 9th Trondheim CCS Conference - TCCS-9, som gjennomføres i tidsrommet 12.-14. juni, 2017. Konferansen er et bidrag i å akselerere implementeringen av CCS gjennom at det etableres en møteplass for å løfte frem og diskutere pågående arbeid og nye aktiviteter innen CCS utført av forskningsinstitusjoner, universiteter og i industribedrifter. Konferansen dekker hele verdikjeden for CO2. Hovedaktivitetene er: planlegging og organisering, gjennomføring av konferansen, utdeling av SINTEF and NTNU CCS Award, publisering av en samling vitenskapelige papers, samt rapportering. En organisasjonskomite og en vitenskapelig komite er oppnevnt, og prosjektleder for konferansen er Nils A. Røkke. Konferansen har totale kostnader på kNOK 2.822, hvorav kNOK 1404 er direkte kostnader. Med estimerte inntekter på kNOK 2.274, er beregnet underskudd kNOK 548. Inntektssiden er imidlertid beheftet med vesentlig usikkerhet da den baseres på antall deltakere og sponsorinntekter. Det omsøkte beløp er kNOK 700, som er nær halvparten av direktekostnadene. Konferansen har meget god overensstemmelse med CLIMITS mandat, bidrar effektivt til en tettere kopling mellom ulike FoU-aktører, har en klar internasjonal profil, og arrangeres i den hensikt å bidra til formidling av forskningsresultater.

Hydrogen - fremtidens energibærer
I dag produseres hydrogen hovedsakelig i storskala ved dampreformering av naturgass (SMR). Separat CO2-fangst kreves for å unngå utslipp fra slik reformering. Det er derfor nødvendig å utvikle teknologi med potensial for å redusere kostnadene knyttet til CO2-fangst og med det kunne produsere utslippsfritt hydrogen til en konkurransedyktig pris.
I TechnoSER-prosjektet produseres hydrogen ved en innovativ, kosteffektiv prosess kalt absorbsjonsfremmet reformering (SER). En fast CaO-basert CO2-absorbent tilsettes i reformeringstrinnet, blandet med katalysator, og CO2 fanges samtidig som reformeringen forbedres. Denne modifikasjonene gjør prosessen enklere, og høyere hydrogenkonsentrasjon (95-99 %-v) oppnås i ett enkelt trinn. I tillegg behøves ikke skift-katalysatorer. Et ekstra prosesstrinn benyttes for å regenerere absorbenten og her produseres da nesten ren CO2. Dette gjøres ved å tilføre høytemperatur varme (800-900oC).
SER-prosessen har blitt utviklet ved Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE) og ZEG Power gjennom mer enn ti år. Teknologien er vist i labskala og verifisert i pilotskala med kapasitet til å produsere ca 1 kg H2/time. Arbeidet i TechnoSER baseres den utførte teknologiutviklingen og målet med prosjektet er å optimalisere prosessen for videre oppskalering.
Følgende hovedaktiviteter har blitt utført for å redusere investerings- og driftskostnader:
A)	Modellering av SER-reformer i turbulent modus
B)	Optimalisering av regenereringstrinnet ved integrasjon av pulseringsbrenner
C)	Optimalisering av absorbentmaterialet for å bedre fangstkapasiteten og mekaniske egenskaper
D)	Ytelses- og kostsammenligning for oppskalering
Det utførte arbeidet og de oppnådde resultater er oppsummert:
A) IFE har utviklet en modell for å simulere fluidized bed-reformeren I turbulent strømningsregime. Tilnærmingen er basert på en probabilistisk evaluering og har en fordel i at modellen også kan beyttes for alle andre mulige strømningsregimer. Modellen beregner konstentrasjonsprofiler langs den aksiale lengden av reaktoren. De utførte simuleringene indikerer at en fordobling av den overordnede gasshastigheten, fra et boblende til svakt turbulent regime, resulterer i en 5 % reduksjon av hydrogenkonsentrasjonen. Ytterligere økning av gasshastigheten gir fortsatt høye hydrogenkonsentrasjoner, men mengden absorbent øker også.
B) Basert på ZEG og IFEs beregnede varmebehov, har TRI levert design av en 2. generasjons pulseringsbrenner. Resultatene viser at selv om brennersystemet kan gi flere fordeler sammenlignet med vanlige brennere, koblet til en u-rørs varmeveksler (dagens konfigurasjon), særlig knyttet til størrelse og varmevekslerareal, viser resultatene at dette nye brennersystemet ikke vil gi de ønskede kostnadsreduksjonene. Årsaken er hovedsakelig at pulseringsbrenneren krever kjølevann for å sikre riktig driftstemperatur. Dette tyder på at i SER-prosessen kan denne løsningen kun implementeres ved behov for overskuddsdamp, og vil i så måte vurderes for fremtidige applikasjoner.

C)  I arbeidet med utvikling av absorbent har fokus vært på å optimere mikro-pulversyntesen, med vekt på studier av påvirkningen temperatur, væske-/faststoff-forhold, reaksjonstid og CaO-innhold har på materialets ytelser. Småskala granulering av absorbentpulveret har også blitt utviklet og justert for et optimalt CaO-innhold for å sikre tilstrekkelig kjemisk stabilitet og mekanisk styrke. Det granulerte absorbentmaterialet, produsert ved den optimale produksjonsmetoden viser stabil langtids absorbsjonskapasitet på rundt 0,2 g-CO2/g-absorbent etter 1000 sykluser og høy reaksjonskinetikk. Det er oppnådd en hydrogenkonsentrasjon på 98,7 volum-% under SER-reaksjoner i boblende gassregime ved bruk av den optimaliserte absorbenten mikset med en kommersiell katalysator. Det er utviklet en industriell produksjonsrute for absorbenten og investeringskostnaden for et anlegg for produksjon av 10 tonn absorbent pr. dag har blitt evaluert.
D) ZEG Power har arbeidet med optimalisering av en tidligere utviklet prosessmodell for SER i basiskonfigurasjon. Den utviklede modellen viser god overensstemmelse med tidligere beregnede data fra SER reaktormodell. Modellen har blitt brukt for sammenligning av SER-teknologien og konvensjonelle teknologier. Det er gjort kostnadsberegninger for et 1 MW (30 kg H2/timer) og 20 MW (600 kg H2/time) og gjort sammenligning med konvensjonelle teknologier (SMR, ATR og elektrolyse). Resultatene viser at SER-teknologien har en konkurransedyktig posisjon. I tillegg er det gjort et nytt design av regeneratorens varmeveksler for forbedret skaleringsevne.

Sorption-Enhanced Reforming (SER) is an innovative reforming technology that allows pre-combustion CO2 capture at high temperature. It combines reforming, water gas shift and CO2-capture in the same reactor (reformer) providing a process intensification with hydrogen production in one single step. A high temperature solid CO2 sorbent (usually CaO-based), is introduced and mixed together with the reforming catalyst, in the reaction. The simultaneous removal of CO2 moves the thermodynamic equilibrium towards higher hydrogen production at lower temperatures, and hydrogen concentrations up to 98 vol% (dry basis) can be obtained in the temperature range of 550 ? 650ºC. The CO2 captured as a solid carbonate is released by increasing the temperature in a second reactor, the regenerator. In this step, heat has to be provided via a high temperature heat exchanger or via oxy-combustion.
The main goal of TechnoSER is to develop an improved and optimized SER- process for cost-efficient hydrogen production with integrated CO2 capture focused on the main challenges for taking the technology to commercial use: 
- Efficient heat transfer for regeneration of the CO2-sorbent 
- Compact design of the reformer
- Optimized sorbent materials
The expected results are lower energy intensity in the process, as well as lower capital and production costs for hydrogen and for CO2 capture compared to state-of-the-art technologies.

Technical innovations for upscaling and commercialization of the Sorption-Enhanced Reforming technology

Prosjektet MOC-OTM fokuserer på utvikling av nye komposittmaterialer for oksygen-separasjonsmembraner som kan brukes ved relativt lave temperaturer (< 600 °C). Disse nye membranene kan implementeres i karbonfangst-relaterte teknologier (CCS), som f.eks i oxy-fuel forbrenning og gi høyere energieffektivitet basert på lavere driftstemperatur som også øker membranens stabilitet. Prosjektet vil også bidra til utvikling av katoder som kan brukes i nye brenselceller som kan brukes ved lavere temperatur.
Vi utvikler komposittmembranene langs to tilnærminger. 
1)	For keramiske kompositt membraner:
a) Vi har utviklet termokjemisk stabile membraner basert på blanding av oksidionledere som Bi2O3 og elektroniske ledere som Sr-dopet LaMnO3 (LSM) og LaFeO3 (LSF). Disse membranene viste høy oksygenfluks, sammenlignbar med de beste oksygenmembranene basert på Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (BSCF), og med mye bedre stabilitet i CO2 atmosfære som er viktig for mange anvendelser. Noen resultater ble publisert på 'Chem. Commun., 2019, 55, 3493 ', og omfattende evalueringer av denne typen membraner ble utarbeidet for publikasjoner sendt til 'Journal of Membrane Sciences'. Videre har tilsetninger av Ta, Pr og Tm til Bi2O3 for å danne enfasede oksygen-separasjonsmembraner blitt studert. Den målte oksygenflusstettheten til enfaset membran var mye lavere enn den for cer-cer-membraner, noe som indikerer viktigheten av elektronisk ledende fase i membranenes transport. 
b) Oksygenoverflateutvekslingskinetikken til ren og dopet Bi2O3, LSM og kompositter basert på dem er for tiden under etterforskning ved hjelp av isotoputvekslingsgassfaseanalyse (IE-GPA), pulsert isotoputvekslingsgassfaseanalyse (PIE-GPA), og ToF-SIMS. Resultatene fra dette arbeidet er oppsummert i en artikkel for publikasjon i vitenskapelig journal, tittelen er "Oxygen surface exchange kinetics in Bi2O3-based mixed conductors".
2)  For to-fase fast-flytende membraner:
a) Et fast-flytende kompositt-system basert på smeltet Bi2O3 er blitt testet og det er vist at oksygen transporteres i smelten. Det er lagt vekt på å søke etter et passende oksid som danner eutektisk blandingssystem med Bi2O3 for å oppnå et lavere smeltepunkt, og som er kompatibel med keramiske matriser.
b) Salter basert på K2SO4 og V2O5 med smeltepunkt lavere enn 500 °C er blitt infiltrert i forskjellige porøse keramiske bærere, inkludert rene elektroniske ledere og kompositter av elektroniske og oksid-ioneledere. Komposittmembranene har vist oksygengjennomtrenging i temperaturområdet 500-650 ° C. Imidlertid er stabiliteten til den keramiske bæreren fortsatt en utfordring.
c) Et ZrV2O7-30mol%-V2O5 fast-flytende kompositt har blitt karakterisert ved hjelp av elektromotoriske (EMF) og elektrokjemisk målinger siden for økt forståelse av enkeltbidragene. Når V2O5 smelter og øker V2O5-volumperkolasjonen, øker den elektriske ledningsevnen med en faktor 10 og aktiveringsenergien øker fra 0.21 til ~0.7 eV. Oksygen red-ox-reaksjonen på overflaten endres fra å være hastighetsbegrenset av ladningsoverføringsprosesser til masseoverføringsprosesser som en konsekvens av rask oksygenutveksling i smeltet V2O5 sammenlignet med den helt faste kompositten. Dette arbeidet, med tittelen " Electrical transport in a V2O5-ZrV2O7 molten/solid composite", ble publisert i Journal of Materials Chemistry A 16. august 2021.
d) Defektkjemi og transportegenskaper i ZrV2O7 har blitt undersøkt ved eksperimentelle og beregningsmetoder som DFT. Et vitenskapelig bidrag med tittelen "Defekter og transport i ZrV2O7" er under forberedelse for innsending.
e) Porøse bærere er svært viktige for å utvikle faste/flytende membraner. En støvete gassmodell er brukt for å simulere gasstransport i porøse medier. For bedre å forstå egenskapene som permeabilitet, bøyelighet, osv., implementeres i dyp læring for å generere 3D-porøs struktur fra et 2D-treningsbilde. I tillegg brukes en slik metode også for å analysere trippelfasegrense på membranoverflater.
Når det gjelder prosessintegrasjoner, ble ytelsesevalueringer av komposittmembranene når det gjelder energieffektivitet utført ved å beregne material- og energibalansene for prosessene i oksygen basert forbrenning i gassturbinsykluser (Oxy-GT) og i hydrogenproduksjon. En systematisk tilnærming til integrering av membraner i disse prosessene ble utviklet, som viser potensialet for effektivitetsforbedring. Analyser indikerte at den optimale operasjonen til OTM-er er ved 750 °C for Oxy-GT og 800 °C for ATR, og et høyt gjenvinnings- og matetrykk i området 5-10 bar er også nødvendig for konkurranseevnen til OTM-er.

Many of current energy conversion and storage technologies utilize the fine interfaces between porous solid and functional ion-conducting liquid phases. Fundamental and microscopical understanding of how they work is, however, limited. Understanding of the properties of materials confined in constrained geometry is of fundamental interest, as surface interactions due to spatial restriction and low dimensionality of the confining matrix result in the physical and chemical behavior of the confined systems much different from the bulk. The MOC-OTM project addresses these challenges and takes as starting point the recent discoveries of new systems (e.g. dual phase gas separation membranes and apparent proton conduction in ceramics at room temperature pursued separately in preceding RCN projects) and advances in theory, modelling, and high resolution and in-situ instrumentation to call for a deeper and more generic investigation of the principles at hand. This will be exemplified in the present project with the development of high flux oxygen transport membranes operating at intermediate temperature to increase efficiency of oxygen combustion in CCS integrated power plants. The membranes will be designed as molten/solid composite systems exhibiting high oxygen flux density through confinement effects in microstructured solid phases. The project will contain theoretical and modelling activities, experimental studies of key materials systems and fabrication of microstructured ceramic matrices and composite membranes. Membranes will be tested in relevant conditions to evaluate their operating window and address stability of operation over 500h. The project is led by SINTEF, with UiO, Colorado School of Mines, Imperial College London, University Twente, as national and international collaborators, and has an advisory board including Air Liquide, CoorsTeK Membrane Sciences and Cerpotech to ensure industrial relevance. It trains one PhD candidate and lasts for 3 years.
