Genetic variation and population dynamics in Sphagnum over time and space

In this project I intend to study the changes in genetic diversity over time in sub-fossilized populations of Sphagnum fuscum taken from peat cores from ombrotrophic bogs. Several of the patterns in genetic variation we see today have historical causes an d to understand the current pattern of genetic structure and diversity it is necessary to know the historical processes. Establishment of new individuals in closed Sphagnum carpets is probably an infrequent event but there might be periods with a high est ablishment. Natural selection is also an important process for the microevolution of natural populations, in environments with a large habitat variation on micro-geographical scale variable selection might help to maintain genetic polymorphism. Studies of the population processes in the sub-fossil peat archive might allow tracing these historical processes.
