Functional genomics of synaptic communication and memory storage

Memory is thought to be arise from enduring, plastic changes in the strength of synaptic communication. The core cellular event in this process is the synthesis of new mRNA and protein. The scientific aim of this project is to provide original insight int o the regulation of gene networks and protein complexes underlying brain information storage. The strategic aim is to bring frontline expertise and technology in functional genomics of the synapse to Norway, creating synergies with FUGE technology platfor ms. Most brain-enriched transcripts are expressed in low abundance and many important, but small, modulations can be expected to occur. Much of the signaling machinery of synaptic communication lies embedded in large protein scaffolds within the postsyn aptic spine. Furthermore, a fraction of the genome, possibly comprising hundreds of mRNAs, lies readied for translation at the synapse.
