Cost Effective Utilization of Bioenergy - Advanced Biomass and Waste Combustion

Advanced combustion of biomass and municipal solid waste will become important in order to increase the utilization of renewable energy; reduce the emission of greenhouse gases from landfills; reduce NOx, particle and NOx emissions; convert to CO2 neutral heat and power production; reduce landfill volume. At least one new concept for advanced combustion of waste and biomass. This concept might be applicable for use in small- or medium-scale technology and for biomass and/or waste. This concept might be a pplicable for both retrofit of existing plants as well as in new design of plants. State-of-the-art experimental equipment and modeling tools will be utilized for design of the new advanced combustion system. In phase one (this project), a selection of br eakthrough concepts (through a literature study and theoretical evaluation) will be finalized. The selected concept(s) will be subject to a further investigation (lab-scale experiments) and large-scale experiments will be planned. A a new method for test ing of fuels in terms of combustion characteristics (by use of in-house methods and equipment) will be developed. The purpose of such an in-house standard is to compare fuels in order to identify potential problems or possibilities when used either alone or in combination with other fuels. In phase one (this project), the framework for a knowledge database for biomass and waste fuels will be finished. Initial testing of fuels will be performed in the multi-fuel reactor, with measurements of flue gas quali ty. The project will establish a network (user-club) of industrial companies, R&D institutes and universities. The objective is to ensure a continuous and long-term strengthening of R&D activities within the field of energy from biomass and waste. Techn ology monitoring through international networks (such as IEA, ISWA, ThermalNet and a well established international network of industry, research institutes and universities) will be an important part of the aCOM project.
