CO2 storage by carbonation of olivine: Overseas grant for a PhD student

Tildelt: kr 89 557

This application concerns an overseas grant to the United States for Anette Haug. Anette is employed as a PhD fellow at the Norwegian University for Science and Technology. Her thesis is connected to the project ?From waste to value?, where Institute for Energy Technology has the project management. The main objective of ?From waste to value? is to explore the use of CO2 for increased value of different industrial mineral resources. The intention is to improve the quality and recovery percentage of presen t products, and to develop new value added products by reduction of waste. The PhD thesis is focussing on olivine reactions and methodology on how comminution can be combined with a chemical process to increase reaction rates. A concept on ?leaching-while -crushing? is being developed. Carbonation processes of olivine have favourable energy balance, and are therefore a net sinks for CO2. Due to large reserves Norway has a unique position for combined CO2 storage and added value utilising the olivine resour ces.
