CO2 Raman Thermometry in Oxy-Fuel Combustion

Tildelt: kr 0,54 mill.

Of all the technological alternatives to produce power with CO2 capture, the most demanding strategy is the one based on oxy-fuel combustion, because the technology is not yet mature. Many challenges remain in the design of the oxy-fuel gas turbine in gen eral and on the combustion side in particular. The demand on knowledge in oxy-fuel systems is high. The BIGCO2 KMB project led by SINTEF has as a sub-goal to provide necessary knowledge to aid the design of a future oxy-fuel combustor. A key variable to u nderstand the particularities of oxy-fuel combustion is the in-flame turbulent temperature, because of its implication on the fluid dynamic and the chemical reactions. Yet, it is the most difficult to measure, particularly in oxy-fuel flames. This status motivates the present project proposal aiming at developing an original method based on Raman spectroscopy applied to CO2, to be used in the future BIGCO2 research activity. The project will be performed in collaboration with IUSTI, France, which possesse s the expertise in spectroscopic phenomena for diagnostics. SINTEF/NTNU and IUSTI will join effort and equipement to perform this project. The fellowship will provide the SINTEF researcher a stay at IUSTI (4 months), in addition it will be applied for a E NGAS EU-grant for a IUSTI researcher for a stay at SINTEF in Trondheim. The research tasks are: * Development of a CO2 Raman simulation code, taking into account CO2 local properties, exciting laser linewidth and transfer function of the detection system (at IUSTI France). * High temperature optical cell measurements (unique laboratory high temperature furnace developed at IUSTI Marseilles): testing of the output of simulation and constitution of a CO2 Raman spectra database (in Trondheim lab). * Validati on in Turbulent Oxy-fuel Flame: testing of the method on a turbulent oxy-fuel flame (in Trondheim lab). * joint scientific publication writing for a peer-reviewed journal
