Preventive Health Care of Farmed Fish

Tildelt: kr 6,1 mill.

Technological advances have helped intensification of aquaculture; nonetheless diseases continue to be the major risk factor in operations. Norwegian aquaculture looses approximately NOK 1 billion every year due to disease and related issues, and more th an NOK 250 millions are spent annually on vaccines. Though chances of survival of farmed fish have vastly improved through technological innovations, no effort should be spared to reduce the risk of infection and preventive measures are becoming increasin gly relevant in this direction. The importance of safe, drug-free aquaculture products and issues on animal welfare points to the significance of health care for cultured fish. This project aims to contribute to measures for preventive health by developin g farm tools to monitor health and strategies to improve their well-being, primarily through immunocompetence building. Aquaculture as a field of study is in the forefront of the development strategy of Høgskolen i Bodø; more so being located in Nordland , a region that tops fish production in the country . The proposed project area of Fish Health taps into the developing research expertise at the Department and it is expected to create new research opportunities. On the other hand, the project has a dire ct bearing on the industry and the deliverables would be a substantial contribution to scientific farming. It shall also have a link to industry-oriented projects: a) NFR project 'Næringsrettet Høgskolesatsing' b) 'ARENA Innovasjon Havbruk' project and c) several applied science projects at the Department. Through implementation of the concept of 'Opti-Helse', this research team aims to be on the vanguard at the national level in the years ahead as a proponent of sustainable ways of fish farming. The sco pe and design of the project makes it particularly apt in relation to the SHP program of NFR.
