Novel fibre-based water barrier packaging for transport of fresh fish and agricultural products

The principle objective of this project is to develop novel waterproof fibre-based packaging concepts for long distance transport of fresh fish and agricultural products. The new packaging concept will provide completely new functionality by allowing comp act transport of erectable boxes to suppliers of fish and agricultural products. Two innovative packaging grades will be developed and product specifications required for optimal packaging have to be taken into account during the development of the new pa ckaging concept. Concept I should be a fibre-based packaging for transport of fresh fish. Concept II should be a fibre-based packaging for transport of agricultural products. Demonstrator products will be developed. In order to develop such packaging ther e is a great need for innovation, both in paper- and fiber treatment, sizing, coating, lamination and processes as well as converting, construction and design. The R&D-challenges in this project are of a complex nature and therefore needs multidisciplina ry collaboration. The project will focus on the following main research challenges: - To develop and combine different types of sizing agents, wet-strength agents, coating agents and extrusion coating to achieve excellent water barrier properties. - To d evelop paperboard qualities with sufficient strength properties and dimensional stability of the packaging after chemical and surface treatment. - To develop a packaging with suitable insulation properties for transport of fresh fish. - To develop a pac kaging with functional design and at the same time suitable for the converter machines. This project will be a co-operation between, Peterson AS, Eka Chemicals AB, PFI AS, STFI-Packforsk AB, SINTEF, NTNU, Fjord Seafood ASA and A.L Gartnerhallen.
