IMPROVED EFFICIENCY AND DURABILITY OF PEM WATER ELECTROLYSERS FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

Tildelt: kr 3,0 mill.

Water electrolysers based on proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology show very promising results with respect to stable and efficient hydrogen production from renewable energy sources. Major challenges to overcome before this technology may be considere d viable in this context include cost reductions and inreased unit lifetime. This is particularly important for the anode oxide electrocatalysts. The proposed work thus includes investigations of electronic, electrocatalytic, morphological, acid-base, an d structural properties of electrocatalysts based on iridium oxide. The purpose is to obtain ad rational set of guidelines for their selection and sythesis with regard to efficiency and stability. The project will educate on PhD and engage one research s cientist. Norwegian industry will also be actively engaged in the work. The project relates to two ongoing projects at NTNU, and is regarded highly relevant to the RENERGI programme.
