Integration of Data Processing in Oil and Gas Drilling and Completion

Tildelt: kr 4,5 mill.

Modern oil and gas industry is to a large extent a knowledge and information industry. It is commonly agreed that the capacity of handling large amounts of information has a key impact on both added value and the ability to protect the natural environment . Techniques from computer science and informatics can make significant contributions to productivity and environment protection by improving the industry's ability to structure, transmit, process and share information. The recent years advance in informa tion technology make possible new work processes and more integrated cooperation between operators and vendors. The project is an important project since it targets the computer science challenges raised by IO Generation 2 in the drilling area. Building o n the Integrated Information Platform (IIP) ontology developed for the drilling area, IDP-D&C will provide new knowledge about modelling ontologies and methodologies in the drilling area. This will provide improved quality of the drilling ontology, hopef ully, also extended it. Furthermore, the project will build up both highly needed competence and capacity at the university level on semantic web and ontologies. OLF considers these research tasks to be key factors for the successful implementation of IO G2. The project focuses two key areas identified in the program: Communication technology, communication- and information infrastructure and software technology and information systems. Both Information Technology and Energy are strategic research top ics both in Rogaland and at UiS. The consortium hasbeen working on this topic for some years. As the global market leader on development and delivery of integrated drilling systems, National Oilwell Varco will provide the project with valid use cases fro m current and future industrials needs related to oil and gas production emphasizing on drilling.
