Arrange a Norwegian - Chilean workshop on modern techniques for monitoring of the aquatic environment

Tildelt: kr 74 578

National monitoring programmes for marine and freshwater quality constitute the fundament for a sustainable use of these resources. For the two main producers of farmed Atlantic salmon Norway and Chile, knowledge on water quality and its effects on fish h ealth is a key factor to achieve a sustainable industry with acceptable fish welfare and with minimized negative effects on the environment. The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) has started a process to document inlet water quality to Chilean salmon hatcheries. Together with Chilean research partners we are interested to take part in the process to develop further also modern marine monitoring programmes both for the purpose of the aquaculture industry, but also to be able to trace possible e ffects of climatic change in the south of Chile. To start this process of collaboration we plan to gather key research groups from both Chile and Norway in a 3?days workshop to get an overview over the ongoing monitoring in Southern Chile today, and to se e how we can proceed further by joining Chilean and Norwegian research groups. Furthermore, the workshop will involve environmental authorities and representatives for different stakeholder organizations like the aquaculture industry to exchange informati on and develop networks for further cooperation.
