Dealing with the past: Victims' experiences of transitional justice in Argentina and Peru

Tildelt: kr 3,5 mill.

-

This project aims at exploring how victims or survivors of human rights violations experience and relate to reparations and court trials, and how such processes influence their lives. The focus of the project will be on Argentina and Peru, two countries w here the processes of transitional justice have taken different paths. In both cases, truth commissions have established a narrative about the past and provided a basis for reparations and prosecutions. By exploring victims' experiences of transitional j ustice in two Latin American countries, the project aims, through a broad and interdisciplinary approach, to establish a better understanding of the relationship between social and legal processes and subjective and individual responses. Sociology and psy chology provide important theoretical and analytical frameworks in the study. The study may provide a basis for further development both of theory and practical implementations in relation to the overcoming of injustice through court trials, truth and rep arations, on individual as well as on collective levels.
