Limb wounds in horses are common, however healing is exceedingly slow and fraught with complications. Contrary to body wounds, limb wounds demonstrate only a small amount of wound contraction. The specialist procedure of applying split-thickness skin grafts to limb wounds stimulates wound contraction by unknown mechanisms. The objective of this project is to identify those mechanisms to develop a treatment strategy for equine limb wounds for use in general  practice. Limb wounds are severely impacting animal welfare due to an extended healing/treatment duration, and the risk of euthanasia due to a poor functional outcome. By stimulating wound contraction, healing time will be reduced, and the functional outcome improved, directly benefitting the welfare of wounded horse and reducing treatment cost for the owner. Aim: To identify dermal components stimulating wound contraction, and to develop this knowledge into future state-of-the-art treatment of equine limb wounds for use in general practice. Hypotheses: i) Application of dermal fractions to collagen gels seeded with equine fibroblasts will increase gel contraction in vitro; ii) Application of dermal fractions to experimental limb wounds in vivo, will increase wound contraction resulting in a faster healing time versus wounds treated by conventional methods. Methods: i) The contractile effect of different dermal components will be assessed in a collagen gel/ fibroblast model; ii) Identified dermal components will be tested in a standardized experimental limb wound model in vivo (n=5). Ultimately, results from this project are expected to improve wound treatment in horses, directly impacting animal welfare by reducing healing time and improving the functional outcome of wounded horses. This will also directly benefit horse owners and caretakers and making veterinarians able to offer better treatment solutions.

HESTEFORSK - Raskere og bedre sårheling hos hest med autologe hudkomponenter

Prosjektet «Wheelchair Activity Monitoring» (WHAM) sikter både på å øke fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere, og på å bidra til bredere mål om mangfold og inkludering av personer med nedsatt mobilitet, ved å fremme større tilgjengelighet og deltakelse gjennom innovativ teknologi og forskning.

Rullestolbrukere er tre til fem ganger mindre aktive enn den generelle befolkningen, noe som øker risikoen for å utvikle forebyggbare sykdommer. Selv om det finnes retningslinjer for fysisk aktivitet som er tilpasset rullestolbrukere, trenger vi fortsatt effektive måter å implementere disse på samt nøyaktig teknologi for å spore mulige endringer i fysisk aktivitet. WHAM har som mål å bidra til økt fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere ved å lage digitale verktøy for å monitorere og gi tilbakemelding på rullestolbrukerens aktivitet. WHAM består av tre faser: to år ved University of British Columbia (UBC), som inkluderer et samarbeid med eksperter innen atferdsendrings-intervensjoner for rullestolbrukere; ett år ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) og et halvt år ved Maastricht Instruments - de to siste fasene er viet til å utvikle de digitale teknologiene. 

WHAMs mål er:
1)	Å teste effekten av et treningsprogram på fysisk aktivitetsnivå og fitness blant rullestolbrukere,
2)	Å utvikle nøyaktige algoritmer for monitorering av fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere,
3)	Å lage et system som både monitorerer og gir tilbakemelding på fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere.

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioral intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create
a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

Topfinancing - WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Effektene av fysisk og seksuell vold på ofre og deres familier kan være ødeleggende og vedvarende, med potensielt langvarige konsekvenser for fysisk og mental helse, utdanning, sysselsetting og bruk av velferdstjenester. Mens strafferettssystemet anses som en viktig del av offerets gjenopprettingsprosess, er det begrenset empirisk forskning på hvorvidt strafferettslige prosesser hjelper og/eller hindrer bedring langs disse ulike dimensjonene. I dette prosjektet vil vi adressere dette kunnskapshullet ved å bruke en kombinasjon av kvantitative og kvalitative forskningsmetoder. I de kvantitative analysene vil vi bruke administrative registerdata som dekker hele befolkningen sammen med kvasi-eksperimentelle metoder for å kunne trekke kausale slutninger. Vi vil også benytte maskinlæringsteknikker for prediksjon. De kvalitative analysene vil supplere de kvantitative analysene ved å gi kontekst til et komplekst felt av saker og ofre og ved å identifisere potensielle mekanismer mellom strafferettslige prosesser og utfall for ofrene. Samlet vil disse metodene gi en mer robust, representativ og nyansert forståelse av hvordan kontakt med strafferettssystemet påvirker offeret på tvers av flere viktige livsområder både på kort og lang sikt. Prosjektet ledes av Folkehelseinstituttet (FHI) med Frischsenteret og Universitetet i Oslo som partnere. Prosjektet har et rådgivende utvalg med medlemmer fra Nasjonalt kunnskapssenter om vold og traumatisk stress (NKVTS), ETH Zurich, Universitetet i Oslo, Frischsenteret, Universitetet i Bergen, og OsloMet. Det er også tilknyttet en brukergruppe bestående av personer og organisasjoner som er i kontakt med ofre for vold og overgrep.

Victims of sexual and physical violence is one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. The criminal justice system (CJS) serves a critical role in providing assistance to victims of these crimes, enabling them to seek justice, protection, compensation, and closure. Yet, knowledge about whether the CJS helps or harms these victims is extremely limited. This project aims to remedy this by providing a comprehensive understanding of the role of the CJS in supporting and providing restoration for victims of physical and sexual violence in Norway. We will utilize a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods across disciplines to study outcomes across multiple important life domains, both in the short and long run. For the quantitative analyses we will use exceptionally rich longitudinal administrative register data with full population coverage combined with state-of-the-art quasi-experimental methods for credible causal inference and predictive machine learning techniques. The qualitative analysis will be based on narrative interviews with victims, providing context and insights into how interactions with the CJS shape life stories. The results will yield a robust and nuanced understanding of how the different stages of the CJS impacts victims. This is particularly urgent given how the current emphasis on legal responses to assaults has caused a sense of obligation and civic duty for especially women to report incidents, while the chances of legal closure remain small. In addition to advancing the methods for quasi-experimental designs and machine learning within quantitative criminology, this project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, stakeholders, and practitioners working in the field of victim support and rehabilitation and may inform current legal reform efforts aimed at addressing these issues.

Helpful or harmful: The effects of criminal justice system contact on victims of sexual and physical violence

The goal of the Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms (BECAME) project is to examine the functional neuroplastic mechanisms underlying mitigatory effects of bilingual experience on age-related cognitive decline. While evidence is available for structural brain changes supporting bilingualism-induced effects on cognitive aging (CA), functional mechanisms underlying such effects are not yet well understood. BECAME aims to fill this gap by investigating the trajectory of bilingualism-induced functional neuroplasticity across the adult lifespan (ages 18-85), crucially adopting an individual differences approach related to measurable degree of bilingual engagement. Importantly, although such benefits are thought to be rooted early in the lifespan, evidence for the timeframe and conditions of their early emergence is scarce. The choice of including the whole adult lifespan allows us to investigate these mechanisms and their emergence more directly from a lifespan perspective. I combine behavioral testing with brain recordings via electroencephalography (EEG). EEG is widely used in cognitive neuroscience to assess brain activity and the degree of communication between brain regions (functional connectivity) in response to stimuli and at rest. Combining behavioral and EEG modalities will allow me to test bilingualism’s effect on functional connectivity, as well as its consequences for functional efficiency, the minimum required neural activation to successfully perform a task. This will enable a detailed, evidence-based account of the protective effects observed in older-aged bilinguals, and how they are built from earlier life stages. By illuminating the relationship between multilingualism and resulting neurocognitive adaptations, BECAME will enable to capitalize on it as a health initiative, with manifold societal implications and the potential to be translated into actionable policies exploiting multilingualism to ameliorate effects of CA.

Bilingual Experiences, Cognitive Ageing and underlying Mechanisms

From the SEA to the SOLution. An integrative assessment of marine pollution in a changing Arctic

Marine chemical pollution poses known threats to human health and to biodiversity, ecosystem and societal services. The Arctic is a major sink of global mercury (Hg) pollution. Arctic sediments, sea and glacial ice constitute vast Hg reservoirs. Recent studies raise concerns about their increasing role as local Hg sources. In a rapidly warming Arctic, the consequences of potentially increased environmental Hg on marine biota remain unknown. The objective of SEASOL is to identify the pathway(s) of Hg bioaccumulation in marine food webs of the High Arctic Kongsfjorden (Svalbard). This changing glacial fjord is recognised as a ‘natural laboratory’ of climate change in the Arctic. The fellow’s earlier research has shown the sole measurement of Hg levels as insufficient to connect biotic Hg dynamics to environmental change, whereas the analysis of Hg stable isotopes proved to be a promising tool for source discrimination and biotic transfer. SEASOL will build on the novel application of stable isotope analysis to identify the sources of Hg within the fjord system and the pathways to Hg accumulation within sentinel marine species. On the short-term, the study will provide fundamental knowledge to help understand how emerging sources of Hg from rapid environmental change will impact Arctic marine predators. On the long-term, SEASOL will contribute to the development of early-warning, adaptive management strategies, including modelling, for mitigating the cumulative impact of pollutants and climate change on Arctic marine species. This multidisciplinary approach and the central position of the host institution (Norwegian Polar Institute) in the field of Polar Research will equip the Fellow with a broad set of new skills and lay the foundation for building her specific niche as a future leader in marine pollution science.

Reality-Connected Machine Simulation of Heavy Machinery

The RealSim project proposal aims to connect machine simulation to reality in the framework of heavy machinery, which is an interdisciplinary application. The results of this project are expected to optimize machine performance, accurately and reliably predict machine failure, and reduce overall development and operation costs, thus, serving the Europe’s priority of green transformation and the United Nation’s sustainable development goal 9. The RealSim project will close the gaps of: (1) Onboard estimations of force and pressure components of heavy machinery; (2) Estimating deformability, cylinder friction, leakage, and valve dynamics of heavy machinery using independent nonlinear Kalman filters; (3) Employing dependent nonlinear Kalman filters in state estimators of heavy machinery; (4) Tuning algorithms for the covariance matrix of plant noise in the state estimation of heavy machinery. 

I will consolidate and leverage my research career and position as a leading researcher in the field through integration in Assoc. Prof. Mohammad Poursina’s group at the Department of Engineering Sciences of the University of Agder (UiA), Norway. Here, I will acquire hands-on experience of working with actual mechatronic systems and develop efficient control algorithms. I will improve my knowledge of fluid power designing, control theory, instrumentation, and develop efficient coding skills. I will also develop entrepreneurial skills. The skills, knowledge, and international network that I will develop during this fellowship will put me in an excellent position to achieve my long-term goal of becoming a professor with my own independent research group at an esteemed university in EU. This fellowship will help me to prepare a strong ERC Starting Grant application in the future. It will also cater my additional goal of setting-up a research-related start-up in the future.

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Enabling the next generation in search of blood cancer cures

The CarrerasPathfinder program is new a world-wide unique doctoral program that covers the entire spectrum of research and innovation in blood cancers from understanding disease biology to the implementation of novel processes in the clinical practice. The program will fund 14 excellent Doctoral Candidates (DCs) for a period of 48 months. DCs will perform collaborative PhD projects involving associated partners from different sectors, countries, and disciplines through secondments. DCs will improve their research capacity and transferable skills through high-quality supervision arrangements and a tailored training program.

The program has been designed and will be hosted by the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) which is the first European non-profit institute exclusively devoted to blood cancers. By answering the European needs for human resources, it is fully aligned with the 13 recommendations of the EU Cancer Board’s Draft Mission  and the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (2021). The CarrerasPathfinder program has a strong triple-I dimension of internationality, inter-sectorality and interdisciplinarity in training, networking, co-supervision and research. Its specific objectives are:
•	To develop an excellent doctoral program in blood cancer research conceived as a pilot for a permanent international doctoral program
•	To equip DCs with a unique skill set boosting effectiveness and innovation capacity. 
•	To promote DCs’ career development and increase their employability in different sectors.
•	To establish the IJC as a European reference for research and training in blood cancers.
•	To provide Europe with a new generation of researchers able to address unmet needs and societal challenges of blood cancers.
•	To contribute to structuring the European research area by collaborating and synergizing with other European key opinion leaders.



Tenk på universet som en enorm ballong som alltid utvider seg. Jo lenger unna et punkt er på ballongen, jo raskere beveger det seg bort fra deg. Dette ligner på hvordan universet utvider seg, jo lenger unna en galakse er, jo raskere beveger den seg bort fra oss på jorden.

I mange år trodde forskerne at universets ekspansjon ble bremset. Begrunnelsen deres var at gravitasjonskraften fra all materie i universet virket mot denne utvidelsen. Imidlertid gjorde kosmologer i 1998 en overraskende oppdagelse gjennom studiet av fjerne supernovaer: utvidelsen av universet akselererer faktisk!

Dette betyr at avstanden mellom galaksene blir større og større i stadig økende hastighet. Det er som om ballongen blåses opp raskere og raskere.

Forskere vet ikke nøyaktig hva som får universet til å akselerere. De kaller den ukjente kraften som får dette til å skje "mørk energi". Mørk energi er overalt i universet, men den mørke energien vekselvirker ikke med materie i de formene som vi kan observere direkte.

NEVO-prosjektet er et nytt forsøk på å forstå egenskapene til mørk energi. NEVO vil bruke kraftige datamaskiner for å simulere universet og studere effekten av kandidater til den mørke energien på en måte som aldri har vært gjort før. Ved å studere disse simuleringene og utnytte høypresisjons-observasjonene fra Euclid-teleskopet som nylig er skutt opp i rommet, vil kosmologene være i stand til å bedre betydelig vår forståelse av den mørke energiens gåtefulle natur.

The Universe has entered an accelerating expansion phase in the last few billion years of its evolution, a phenomenon that is caused by the mysterious entity known as dark energy. Through the NEVO proposal, I aim to provide key insights about the properties of dark energy, which includes its time evolution and spatial distribution in the Universe. This objective will be achieved by utilizing cutting-edge cosmological N-body simulations and novel techniques to study cosmic EVOlution accurately.

A comprehensive understanding of the nature of dark energy requires a thorough investigation of viable candidates and their impact on different stages of the Universe. However, the consistent and accurate modeling of dark energy candidates has been largely neglected so far. To address this gap, I propose the development of a novel, integrated framework that utilizes state-of-the-art relativistic N-body simulations along with the hi_class code, to accurately model dark energy candidates in both linear and non-linear scales.

NEVO: illuminating the dark cosmos

Global natur- og miljøforvaltning er en av vår tids mest sentralt og vanskellige mål. Mange av utfordringene skyldes motsetningene mellom vår fragmenterte politiske verden og økosystemer som ikke forholder seg til landegrenser eller politiske skillelinjer.
Ulike biologiske samfunn (biomer) som ligger i én stat, kan ikke løsrives fra et større økosystem. Derfor er flere «lokale» naturområder blitt del av den globale miljøforvaltningen.
Prosjektet RESOLVING skal se på politiske løsninger for en naturforvaltning som både er:
(i) lokal: som del av en stats territorium og hjem til ulike befolkningsgrupper
(ii) global: som kritiske deler av planetens økosystem
Hva betyr denne forvaltningen på flere nivåer for staters suverenitet?
Vi vet allerede mye om utfordringene nasjonalt oppdelt myndighet utgjør for effektiv forvaltning av jordens økosystemer. Vi vet derimot langt mindre om hvordan forsøkene på å styre jordens komplekse og grenseløse økosystemer faktisk kan endre selve systemet som forsinker den globale forvaltningen: statlig suverenitet.
RESOLVING vil prøve å forstå denne dynamikken ved å undersøke gruppene som faktisk utøver internasjonal naturforvaltning på vegne av eller parallelt med statene. Prosjektet vil her se nærmere på styringen av to områder som er viktige for hele verden: Amazonas-regnskogen og Guineabukta.
RESOLVING undersøker hvordan tiltak for å ta vare på disse områdene – laget på både internasjonalt, nasjonalt og lokalt nivå – fungerer sammen. Hvilke aktører får mer makt? Hvem blir inkludert i beslutningsprosessene og hvem blir utelatt?

The RESOLVING project asks: How does global governance of nature transform the exercise of sovereign power? Scientific evidence of the environment as a complex system of planetary dimensions has elevated several natural resources as objects of global governance. Primary forests and maritime biomes particularly capture global attention because of their systemic relevance for our planetary ecosystem. Still, international politics operates within a framework locating authority over nature indivisibly into territorially discrete and independent states. This project investigates the implications for sovereignty stemming from the construction of nature as a global governance object. We build on existing conceptualizations of sovereignty as a combination of de jure sovereign authority and bundles of de facto sovereign competence. In the case of nature, while permanent sovereignty over natural resources is an immutable property of state authority, a wider range of actors can be involved in defining the ways in which these resources are governed or even in governing them. RESOLVING will focus on two parcels of local nature especially entangled in global governance: the Amazon rainforest and the Gulf of Guinea. The project will investigate how networks of actors work across levels of governance to produce sovereign competence and exert sovereign power over nature in these regions. Sovereign power is the capacity to achieve de facto sovereign competence, here identified as the capacity to define and implement the rules of human–nature interaction. We look at multilevel governance from three angles: the global, the state, and the local. The comparative analysis of those networks across levels, regions, and regimes complexes will allow for identifying the mechanisms driving the rebundling of sovereign power with or away from the state, and a better understanding of the consequences of that process.

This project is part of an international collaboration project, Task 23 Small Scale Reformers for On-Site Hydrogen Supply, under the International Energy Agency  Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (IEA-HIA). Norway has participated in the project since its k ick off in the Autumn of 2006.

The main goal of the project is development of safe and harmonized technology and a global market guide for on-site hydrogen supply from hydrocarbons, fossil and renewable. 

The Norwegian participants in IEA-HIA Task 23 ha ve been StatoilHydro and SINTEF. SINTEF ICT (by Dr. Ingrid Schjølberg) has been the Operating Agent of the Task 23 since its start up. 

Task 23 is close to having reached is goals and due to its success and large industrial participation the task has bee n extended (Executive Committee (ExCo) meeting, May 2009) and the project will continue through 2010, and hold a final seminar in 2011. There is therefore a need for further funding of the SINTEF participation and SINTEF activities in Task 23. The SINTEF  participation has up till now been funded by the Research Council of Norway, project numbers 180188 and 192960. 

On-site hydrogen production is an important stepping stone towards the development of a hydrogen infrastructure and a more environmental frie ndly transport sector. A cost comparison performed by Task 23 experts show that in an early market phase on-site reforming is cheaper than centralized production. This confirms the need for a harmonization of technology as in footprint, capacity and size  to reduce costs and enable mass production. This project will contribute to development of a hydrogen infrastructure through the development of a basis for safe and harmonized technology for on-site production and a global market guide.

This type of inte rnational collaboration projects, working across disciplines and industrial segments, is essential to facilitate industrialization and cost reduction in the development of a hydrogen infrastructure.

Operating Agent for IEA-HIA Task 23 Small Scale Reformers for On-Site Hydrogen Supply

Norge har under Parisavtalen påtatt seg en forpliktelse til å redusere klimautslippene sine med minst 55 prosent innen 2030 sammenlignet med nivået i 1990. Hittil har vi kun oppnådd 5 prosent av dette målet; vi har følgelig kun syv år på å redusere de resterende 50 prosent for å imøtekomme målene. For 2050 har vi satt oss enda større mål: å redusere klimautslippene med hele 90 prosent. Bakgrunnen for målene er at vi prøver å unngå de verste scenarioene FNs klimautvalg skisserer opp i sine rapporter. I tillegg har energiforbruket økt, og prognosene fra Statnett for ulike scenarier viser at energiforbruket skal fortsette å øke. Vi trenger følgelig mer energi. Dette har bidrat til at diskusjoner rundt kjernekraft i Norge er høyaktuelle og pågående. Norsk Kjernekraft AS har blitt opprettet med formål om å bygge Norges første kjernekraftverk. I tillegg ble det i fjor også bevilget 200 millioner kroner fra Regjeringen til et nytt senter som skal drive med nukleær forskning. Målet er å styrke den norske kunnskapsberedskapen på det nukleære området. Dette betyr at vi beveger oss i en retning hvor kjernekraft en dag kan bli aktuelt i Norge, og noen mener at dette er den eneste veien å gå hvis vi skal nå målene våre for 2050. Men i dag sitter vi med flere spørsmål enn svar, blant annet: Hvilken teknologi og leverandør burde vi velge? Er regelverket for snevert og strengt? Hvordan kan dette gjøres og samtidig ivareta sikkerhet? Hvordan tjener et kjernekraftverk penger?

Dette prosjektet skal svare på samtlige av disse spørsmålene i en detaljert og omfattende analyse. Her bruker vi grunnlagsdata til å vurdere dagens forskning opp mot hvordan industrien i andre land opererer, og ut ifra dette forsøke estimere hva risikoen knyttet til å bygge kjernekraft som industri i Norge er. Prosjektet sikter på å gi et så helhetlig bilde som mulig slik at vi kan gjøre oss opp en mening basert på fakta; om kjernekraft passer inn i miksen av det som utgjør norsk energi.

Denne prosjektbeskrivelsen skisserer forskningen Vala Maria Valsdottir (omtales herunder som stipendiaten) skal utføre innenfor sin doktorgradsavhandling. Prosjektet skal være en del av Senter for nukleær forskning (SNF) som fikk midler vinteren 2023.
Ph.d.-prosjektet er initiert av Inmeta Consulting AS, som igjennom denne ph.d.-stillingen vil bli en del av SNF. Inmeta planlegger en prosjektperiode på fire år, hvor stipendiaten arbeider 75 % med ph.d.-prosjektet og 25 % med vanlig virksomhet hos Inmeta. 
Prosjektet skal undersøke muligheten for kjernekraft som industri i Norge. Dette er både en samfunnsaktuell problemstilling samt en som medlemmene i SNF er interessert i å utforske. Stipendiaten kommer derfor til å samarbeide med alle aktørene som er involvert i senteret og benytte forskningsdata fra dem. Dette gjelder da spesielt Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE) som har mest grunnlagsdata som er relevant for dette prosjektet.
Kandidaten ferdigstilte en masteroppgave høsten 2020 i kjernefysikk på Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) og har derfor gode og relevante grunnkunnskaper for å ta på seg et slikt prosjekt. I tillegg har kandidaten tre års erfaring innenfor energibransjen, og er derfor oppdatert på industrien og forstår deres problemstillinger godt.

Er kjernekraft aktuelt for Norge?

Kunstig intelligens (KI) er på full fart inn i skolen, og har med seg en rekke muligheter, men også problemer. Human Reading Assessment (HUMAN) har som mål å undersøke hvordan teknologien kan tas i bruk i skolen på en måte som setter eleven i sentrum. 

Prosjektet tar utgangspunkt i leseprøvene som elevene må ta på skolen, og svarer på utfordringene KI bringer med seg på flere nivå: 

På det mest grunnleggende nivået vil HUMAN utvikle og undersøke selve algoritmene, og finne ut hvordan de kan brukes i en menneskesentrert leseprøve. 

Neste nivå dreier seg om å undersøke innholdet i læringsteknologien, i dette tilfellet tekstene som skal leses og oppgavene som skal løses. Her legger vi særlig vekt på at Vurderingsforskrifta sier at prøvene ikke bare skal undersøke hva elevene kan, men også fremme læring og bidra til lærelyst. HUMAN vil undersøke hvordan læringsteknologi kan bidra til å utforme tekster og oppgaver slik at de både er engasjerende og støtter læring. I tillegg har vi et mål om å undersøke hvordan prøveresultater bør fremstilles for at lærere skal kunne bruke dem til å tilpasse opplæringen.

På det mest overordnede nivået undersøker vi hva AI i læringsteknologi har å si for barns opplevelse av og handlingsrom i verden, og hva den har å si for barns rettigheter. Hvordan AI implementeres og presenteres i skolen har store konsekvenser for individets evne til å handle med selvstendighet senere i livet. HUMAN handler derfor også om å undersøke utdanningssystemets rolle for individet og i samfunn og arbeidsliv. 

Kunnskapen som frembringes i prosjektet vil gi viktige innspill til fremtidig politikkutforming. Samtidig vil den også være direkte anvendbar for forvaltningen, for lærere og andre aktører i utdanningssektoren.

HUMAN vil foregå i nært samarbeid med norske skoler. Det er et tverrfaglig prosjekt, med forskere innen litteraturvitenskap, lesevitenskap, datavitenskap og juss.

Goal: identify how we can develop a HUMAN digital reading assessment that presents students with tasks adapted to their interests and level of reading skill.

Objectives:
1. New knowledge on the design of engaging texts, tasks and teacher interfaces that can be used to assess reading comprehension
2. A ground-breaking new methodology for adaptive reading assessment, combining IRT with machine learning techniques such as recommender systems and natural language processing
3. Analytical tools for analysing philosophical and legal implications that are specific to the use of AI in assessment
4. A validated and reusable framework harnessing results from objectives 1 to 3 to enable an engaging, precise, and usable assessment

Research questions:
1. What characterizes texts and items that are motivating for children to read and are suitable for valid and efficient assessment of their reading skills?
2. What kind of information do teachers need about their students’ reading skills in order to adapt their instruction?
3. Which methods (from e.g., machine learning, multidimensional scaling and natural language processing) are best suited to match the right text to the right student, with respect to their skills and interest?
4. How can we analyse students’ experience of AI-based digital reading assessment?
5. What are the legal implications of AI-based digital reading assessments?
6. Does the framework established in the project provide a more engaging and precise assessment of reading skills than currently existing assessments?
7. Does the framework established in the project provide the teacher with more actionable information than currently existing assessments?

The project is interdisciplinary. It is anchored in educational assessment, reading science, and computer science. In addition, methods from literature, law and philosophy are employed locally.

Human Reading Assessment

Maritim- og offshoreindustrien har etterlyst en mer strukturert metode, som utnytter dagens teknologiske potensial, for å registrere og få tilgang til informasjon om fartøyets skrogtilstand. Utviklingen av en digital tvilling for vurdering av fartøyets skrogtilstand er et svar på dette som har flere fordeler.

Tidligere forskningsresultater har vist at droner tillater trygge,  automatiserte og fleksible fjerninspeksjoner. For å gi droneinspeksjoner en ekstra fordel, bør teknologi for å utføre droneinspeksjon mens fartøyet seiler, og muligheten til å automatisk gjøre tykkelsesmålinger, utvikles. Registrering av inspeksjonsdata fra droner til en digital tvilling er et naturlig neste steg. Gitt tilstrekkelig kvalitet på drone-innsamlede data, i tillegg til effektiv registrering av menneskelig innsamlede data, kan både menneskelige og dronebaserte inspeksjoner gi data til en digital tvilling og komplementere hverandre. Dette kan muliggjøre en mer effektiv overvåkning av skrogtilstand og redusere antall ganger mennesker utsettes for farene ved inspeksjon av trange/innestengte rom.

Ved å samle inn relevante skrogdata er det et potensial for å utnytte historisk informasjon fra en mengde fartøyer til å lage en statistisk modell for å forutsi skrogtilstanden. Dette kan tillate estimering av skrogets tilstand basert på operasjonelle forhold et fartøy har vært utsatt for. I kombinasjon med konstruksjonsmodeller kan dette også brukes til å automatisk lage skroginspeksjonsplaner som prioriterer områder med økt risiko for å ha feil.

Prosjektet ledes av DNV, et ledende klassifikasjonsselskap, i samarbeid med rederiene Altera Infrastructure og Klaveness, som er henholdsvis oljetanker- og lasteskipsoperatører i dette prosjektet, ScoutDI, en inspeksjonsdrone-leverandør, og NTNU gjennom Autonomous Robots Lab ved avdeling for kybernetikk.

The project will develop the concept of a digital twin of the hull condition for assessing the structural integrity and compliance of the physical hull. The digital twin is kept up to date with the physical hull over its lifetime by frequently collecting large amounts of data, in non-intrusive ways that do not interrupt business operations. This enables continuous monitoring and compliance assessment. Autonomous drones collect the data instead of humans to improve personnel safety. Automated damage detection and coating breakdown assessment assists the human expert, leading to improved quality of the structural integrity assessment. The project will enable digital twin-based surveys as industrial standard and realize economic and safety benefits as well as reducing environmental footprint due to reduced need for travels. 

The innovation will lead to improved quality and safety of vessel inspection services, in particular: 
1. Hull condition assessment and continuous compliance decision in a 3D digital twin, a multi-data digital representation of the physical hull based on data such as high-precision point clouds, videos, AIS and weather data. The digital twin also holds location-tagged thickness measurements, history of damages and repairs, and data of sister vessels. 
2. High coverage, high-quality, location-tagged data of the hull compartment, collected frequently by autonomous/automated drones with semantic knowledge of the physical structure. Automated data collection ensures standardized data which improves comparison with historical data. Drone-based collection during sailing or between discharge and loading of cargo causes minimal interruption of business operations. 
3. Automated damage detection in point clouds and videos, automated damage probability predictions based on data in the digital twin, and an automatically generated targeted inspection plan for the drones as well when physical inspections are deemed necessary.

Assessment of ship hull Integrity based on a Digital Twin

Ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet utforsker RELAY-prosjektet fremtidens energistyring ved hjelp av relasjonell dyplæring. Dette er en familie av kunstig intelligensmodeller som behandler data som tidsserier og grafer. Denne nyskapende tilnærmingen er utformet for å takle energisystemenes kompleksitet, noe tradisjonelle modeller ofte sliter med. 

RELAY har fokus på tre kjerneoppgaver: 
1. Forbedret lastprognose: RELAY vil integrere nettverkstopologi i prognosemodellene for å muliggjøre presis energidistribusjon og planleggingsprediksjoner, noe som er avgjørende for nettets effektivitet. 
2. Dynamisk optimalisering av kraftflyt: Prosjektet vil utvikle fleksible løsninger for sanntidsjusteringer av nettet, og sikre balanse og optimal ressursallokering. 
3. Effektiv lokalisering av strømbrudd: Ved å representere kraftnett som dynamiske grafer, vil RELAY identifisere risikoområder, noe som muliggjør raskere respons på strømbrudd. Dette er en vital faktor i energiavhengige regioner. 

RELAY handler ikke bare om nettets effektivitet; det fokuserer på bærekraftige praksiser. Prosjektet tar sikte på å redusere miljøpåvirkningen, spesielt CO2-utslipp, ved å adressere problemet med optimal kraftflyt. I tillegg har de metodologiske tilnærmingene som blir utviklet for å håndtere rom-tidlige data, potensial til å revolusjonere ikke bare energisektoren, men også områder som epidemiologi og trafikkstyring. 

En nøkkelfunksjon i RELAY er samarbeidet med norske energiselskaper som Ishavskraft, Lofotkraft og Finnmark Kraft. Dette samarbeidet gjør at prosjektet kan tilpasse forskningen til praktiske anvendelser. 

RELAY er mer enn bare et prosjekt; det representerer et skritt mot en mer effektiv, bærekraftig og robust fremtid. Ved å utnytte relasjonell dyplæring skal det bidra til å transformere vår forståelse av energinettet og åpne veien for avanserte, bærekraftige løsninger innen energistyring.

Machine learning models currently used in energy analytics are unable to jointly capture spatial relationships and temporal dependencies that determine, respectively, how energy flows are routed on the power grid and how the load of the electrical nodes changes over time. This, diminish the effectiveness and hinders the adoption of machine learning in the energy sector.
The existing limitations can be overcome by using dynamic graphs to represent the energy grid and by processing the data with spatio-temporal models. However, such models are still in their infancy and important key challenges must be solved before deploying them in real-world applications.

RELAY will develop the first large-scale deep learning framework capable of handling spatio-temporal data in energy analytics applications. This will be accomplished by advancing the theory and design of spatio-temporal models to let them: i) handle large-scale data; ii) be interpretable in what they learn; iii) quantify the uncertainty in their predictions; iv) learn hierarchical representations that allow analyzing the data at different levels of resolution. 

While the spatio-temporal framework that will be developed is general purpose and suitable for many different applications, RELAY will focus on three important tasks in energy analytics: forecasting of energy production and demand, power flow optimization, and the detection and localization of outages in the power grid.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with the three main energy suppliers in Northern Norway, Ishavskraft, Lofotkraft, and Finnmark Kraft, which will provide data and validate the results.

Relational deep learning for energy analytics

Et Warehouse Control Systems (WCS) til å styre lageret, dette har typisk relativ simpel og regelbasert logik. Self-Managed Warehouse-prosjektet endrer dette med en forbedret tilnærming som bruker AI-teknikker som matematisk optimalisering, maskinlæring og digital tvilling-modellering.
Prosjektet introduserer en toveis digital tvilling, en virtuell modell som speiler og samhandler med hver del av lageret i sanntid. Denne modellen muliggjør en sømløs integrering av vedlikeholds- og driftsplaner, og sikrer optimal effektivitet.
Den utviklende digitale tvillingen dekker alle lagerkomponenter, fra lagringssystemer til robotarmer, og forbedrer og utvider seg kontinuerlig i omfang. Denne integrasjonen øker ikke bare effektiviteten, men forbedrer også vedlikehold og planlegging.
I tillegg deles prosjektets funn og fremskritt med bransjepartnere, noe som fremmer utbredte forbedringer i lagerstyring. Dette initiativet markerer en overgang til lager som ikke bare er oppbevaringssteder, men smarte, selvstyrende økosystemer, som fører til en mer bærekraftig og effektiv fremtid.

An efficient Warehouse Control System (WCS) is essential for an efficient, sustainable, and labor-friendly warehouse. For too long, warehouses have been managed using myopic WCSs that lack proper integration with the physical components and processes within the warehouse, favoring short-term rewards versus long-term insights.

The Self-Managed Warehouse project aims at a drastic improvement in warehouse operations and maintenance across the sector.  Using an efficient suite of AI techniques composed of mathematical optimization, machine learning and digital twin modeling, a platform will be built that enables coordination of maintenance services with operational requirements, improves warehouse performance, and helps with scenario and what-if analyses of the system. Using up-to-date representations of the real world, decisions on one side of the table will lead to updates on the other side, ensuring that all involved parties are operating with updated best plans and at best possible efficiency.

Through the project a two-way digital twin will be iteratively improved, covering a larger and larger portion of the warehouse – from storage systems to conveyor belts to robotic piece picking arms  and beyond. At the same time, the decision support algorithms integrated with the two-way digital twin will be expanded to be able to cope with the new components, enabling an increasingly holistic improvement of the warehouse, able to take the performance of the entire system – and links to maintenance restrictions – into account.

Better understanding of and support for maintenance and planning in warehouses will be good for the entire warehousing sector, and the project aims to disseminate and share its major findings with the industry through regular meetings and interactions with partners within and without the project consortium.

Self-Managed Warehouse

Prosjektet DigiBygg har som mål å oppnå rask og kostnadseffektiv produksjon av detaljerte digitale bygningsmodeller, som vil fremme bredere bruk av digitale prosesser i byggesektoren. For å oppnå dette vil nye metoder basert på kunstige nevrale nettverk utvikles for å behandle skannet data fra bygninger for å automatisk generere plantegninger og detaljerte 3D-modeller.
 
Bygninger er den største forbrukeren av energi i Europa, ansvarlig for omtrent 40% av EUs energiforbruk og 36% av de energirelaterte klimagassutslippene. Transformasjon innen byggesektoren er derfor avgjørende for å nå FNs bærekraftsmål.
 
Exact Geo Survey er et ledende selskap innen oppmåling, scan til BIM, IT og digitalisering som ønsker å sette en ny standard for hvordan 3D-modeller og tegninger opprettes fra skannede punktskyer. Denne ambisiøse oppgaven vil bli utført sammen med SINTEF som FoU-partner, samt andre BIM-interessenter fra hele verdikjeden. Den økte tilgjengeligheten av skanningsteknologi har i stor grad forenklet prosessen med å samle data som brukes til å konstruere BIM-modeller. Imidlertid er det fortsatt en arbeidskrevende og derfor kostbar prosess å skape nyttige 3D-modeller og planer fra en punktsky og bilde-data, noe som utgjør en kritisk barrierer for å ta i bruk digitale prosesser, spesielt innen kommunal- og småbedriftssektorene.
 
Derfor trengs det nye metoder for rask og kostnadseffektiv produksjon av 3D-modeller og plantegninger fra skannet data. I dette prosjektet vil vi bygge videre på nylige fremskritt innen kunstig intelligens for behandling av 3D-data og generativ AI for å utvikle nye BIM-produksjonsteknologier som vil gjøre det mulig for Exact Geo Survey å revolusjonere bruken av digitale prosesser innen byggesektoren.

This project aims to significantly reduce the real cost and lead time associated with producing digital building models whilst at the same time preserving the accuracy and their level of detail to support the generation of 2D/3D architectural plans and depth of information to support the full range of BIM analyses. We also want to explore how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to revolutionise how digital building models are employed by end-users and to greatly simplify typical analysis workflows – e.g. by enabling natural language queries of building properties and characteristics. We believe a generic and easy to use interface for extracting non-trivial characteristics from digital building models together with greatly reduced cost and lead time will promote adoption of digital workflows and drive digital transformation.
Realising these goals will require the following key innovations:
•	A more effective solution for labelling/segmenting lidar scan data that supports furnished environments and is precise enough to be used as a basis for producing architectural plans.
•	A new and automated method for producing high-quality 2D plans and 3D models that are in accordance with architectural, construction and private sector requirements. 
•	A new method for automatic classification of building materials.
•	A new framework for integrating AI models with BIM data to enable natural language queries of building properties and characteristics.

DigiBygg – AI for automated production of digital building models and smart building analyses.

Avfallscontainere er et kjent syn for alle som jobber på en byggeplass, …, eller har brukt en til en dugnad i borettslaget. I dag vet avfallsselskapene knapt hvor mange containere de har, og henting av dem når de er fulle foregår som regel ved at noen ringer inn og sier ifra. Sensorita har de siste fire årene utviklet en sensor for å hjelpe til med å finne ut hvor containerne er, og hvor mye avfall de har i seg. Dette prosjektet har som mål å bruke sensordata sammen med andre datakilder for å også si hva slags avfall som er der. Med denne informasjonen, som fungerer som en værmelding for avfall, vil avfallsmottakene kunne planlegge produksjonen sin bedre og dermed sørge for bedre resirkulering.

Waste is one of the most significant challenges of our time, and although the EU has implemented legislations to foster the transition to a circular economy, the lack of digitalization remains a major obstacle. Specifically, construction and industrial waste hold significant untapped value as secondary materials. This project aims to provide digital twins of waste containers with near-live waste characteristics, transforming containers into a decentralized material warehouse. By utilizing sensors and data analysis, stakeholders gain valuable insights for operational and strategic decision-making, revolutionizing waste management practice. The project's positioning lies in its unique remote waste quality monitoring capabilities, offering a scalable solution based on retrofittable sensors for existing waste containers. 

To unlock the potential of waste characterization, the project leverages radar and machine learning. By extracting rich information from radar measurements, waste characteristics can be inferred, with additional data sources like container positions and weather data further enhancing the accuracy. A comprehensive picture of the waste can be constructed, providing insights into waste composition and quality. The solution facilitates better recycling and increases the opportunity for secondary materials to replace virgin materials. 

R&D challenges include quantifying downstream effects, identifying patterns in non-radar data sources, and constructing machine learning algorithms that infer waste characteristics. These challenges require an interdisciplinary approach where understanding of waste generation behavior, radar theory, machine learning, and knowledge about waste based processing and production must be combined. 

The project is a collaboration along the waste value chain, including Veidekke and Ragn-Sells, and is supported by R&D suppliers with sustainability, machine learning and radar expertise; NORSUS, Norsk Regnesentral and Acconeer.

ReWaCC - Remote Waste Characterization and Quality Control

The conference is non-profit and will be organized at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The team has previously organised SCIA 2017, and NLDL 2018/2019/2020/2021/2022/2023, which received support for the events from NFR and were successes. The group has several projects ongoing related to ICT and this conference will benefit those projects.

The conference program will consist of presentations and poster sessions, where participants can present recent and
ongoing work. Participants that would like to present their work have submitted a two-page abstract or a full
six-page paper. Full papers are published in the NLDL proceedings (Level 1 in the Norwegian system). Additionally, there will be a panel discussion, where issues and recent developments in the field will be discussed, as well as dedicated events for "Industry in AI" and "Diversity in AI". We have invited 4 high-profile keynote speakers. This will contribute to the quality and also increase the visibility of the conference.

We will use the conference organizing company Xtenso AS, who will provide help with setting up registration.
We expect 250 participants this year. Expenses for the keynote speakers as well as lunch and dinner for the physical
participants will be covered. This results in an overall direct cost of 555 KNOK (see budget below).
To cover costs, UiT The Arctic University of Norway contributes with 55KNOK (50 hours at an hourly rate of 1100,-
NOK) of Kampffmeyer’s and Jenssen's salary. Additionally, 74 KNOK internal funding and 80 KNOK from industrial sponsors will be used to organize the conference in 2024. Budgeting for 250 participants, this means that we estimate a deficit of 100 KNOK and we hope that with help of 100 KNOK from NFR we will be able to roughly break-even.

Global oppvarming utgjør en betydelig trussel over hele verden, og Norge, med sine høye CO2-utslipp, er intet unntak. Den gjennomsnittlige nordmannens karbonavtrykk er 45% høyere enn det europeiske gjennomsnittet, og landet har bare klart en 1% reduksjon i utslipp siden 1990, sammenlignet med EUs 23%. Denne situasjonen understreker et kritisk behov for endring, spesielt i husholdninger, som står for over 60% av drivhusgassutslippene.

Nordmenn, spesielt den yngre generasjonen, er ivrige etter å adoptere en mer bærekraftig livsstil, men møter utfordringer som mangel på bevissthet om grønne produkter/tjenester og oppfatningen av at bærekraftige valg er lite givende eller dyre.

Vårt prosjekt tar sikte på å takle disse utfordringene ved å utnytte data for å fremme bærekraftig livsstil. Vi planlegger å utvikle en personlig bærekraftig kjøpspoengsum for forbrukere og bedrifter, basert på deres transaksjonshistorikk. Dette vil bli supplert med AI-drevne brukerprofiler, som integrerer ulike datatyper som PSD2-data, linjeelementdata, brukerdata og data om appbruk. I tillegg vil vi lage algoritmer for å forutsi hvilke funksjoner som kan øke bærekraftig oppførsel, og dermed forbedre miljøpåvirkningen til enkeltpersoner og bedrifter.

Dette initiativet forventes å gi individer mulighet til å ta mer informerte beslutninger og motivere bedrifter til å adoptere grønnere praksis. Det representerer et avgjørende skritt mot å fremme en kultur for bærekraft i Norge, og bidrar til en grønnere fremtid.

The dire consequences of global warming are looming on the horizon and quick steps need to be taken not only by large companies and governments but also by individuals who provide the demand for certain unsustainable products (e.g., meat, avocados, etc.) and services (e.g., flights, cars, etc.). The entire world is facing a threatening climate crisis and Norway is also partially to blame. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, in comparison to the average European citizen, the average Norwegian emitted 45% more CO2. And while the EU cut its emissions by 23% since 1990, Norway’s emission cuts were a meagre 1%.   

There is ample room for improvement and there are many avenues of change for Norway. Household decisions account for a whopping 60%+ of greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to a greener diet, greener transport choices, sustainable products, waste reduction, choosing local over international, etc. are all methods within everyone’s reach to change their behaviour. However, while 80% of Norwegians (especially younger generations) would like to live a more sustainable lifestyle, encouraging behavioural changes can be difficult, there is a lack of awareness of green products/services, and sustainable choices can be perceived as unrewarding and/or expensive.

In this project we seek to understanding how user profiles (based on PSD2 data, line item data, user data, and app usage data) and Fauna features influence green behaviour.

We will research and develop
- A personal sustainability buying score for both all consumers and companies based on their transaction history
- AI that combines various data to create detailed user profiles
- Algorithms that predict which features will lead to increased sustainable behaviour and thus increase a user’s green score

AltGreen - Triggering green decision-making

I det globale arbeidet med avkarbonisering av energisystemer har batterier vist seg å være avgjørende komponenter. Ikke bare brukes de til å frigjøre transport fra fossile brensler, men de tilbyr også fleksibiliteten som trengs for energisystemer som er sterkt avhengige av intermittente fornybare kilder. Midt i denne overgangen er fremskritt innen batteriteknologi avgjørende, spesielt med tanke på kostnadseffektivitet og energitetthet. Her kommer SemiSolid litium-ion batteriteknologi (LIB) inn i bildet. Ved å suspendere elektrodene i en elektrolytt, lignende en leiraktig substans, baner SemiSolid LIBs veien for tykkere elektroder med høyere kapasitet og et mer materialeffektivt celledesign.

For å drive denne teknologien fremover, pågår et samarbeid mellom FREYR og NTNU, som benytter kunstig intelligens (KI) og maskinlæring (ML). Ved å utvikle et rammeverk for beregningsbasert modellering, har prosjektet som mål å skape en digital tvilling, som muliggjør omfattende digital eksperimentering og simulering. Dette initiativet tar sikte på å akselerere innovasjon samtidig som det ivaretar kvalitetssikring og reduserer produksjonsavfall – et avgjørende skritt mot å etablere en solid batteriindustri, ikke bare i Norge, men internasjonalt.

Likevel er det store utfordringer. Nøyaktig simulering av LIB-parametere forblir utfordrende på grunn av komplekse interne prosesser. ML er lovende, men bruken av teknikken krever nøyaktighet. Prosjektet tar sikte på å overvinne disse hindringene ved å bruke avanserte ML-teknikker på omfattende datasett, både kommersielle og proprietære, for å forbedre parameterestimering og optimalisere batteriytelsen.

The SemiSolid lithium-ion battery (LIB) technology is a promising new approach to improve LIBs by bridging the gap between conventional LIB technologies and solid-state LIBs. At the core of the SemiSolid technology are electrodes that are co-suspended with the electrolyte, resulting in a clay-like composition. This allows for a much thinner separator membrane between the anode and cathode and results in batteries with more active material and a higher capacity. FREYR Battery Norway AS (FREYR) is an emerging producer of clean battery solutions based on the SemiSolid LIB technology. Currently, the company is considering building gigafactories in the US and Europe with annual production capacities of several tens of GWhs.

Battery design and production represent a new frontier in artificial intelligence (AI) supported production with the potential to dramatically improve future battery cell performance, as well as testing and production processes. In this project, FREYR and NTNU will join forces to develop a software tool for SemiSolid LIB development in the form of a computational modelling framework using a state-of-the-art machine learning approach. The development of tools tailored specifically for SemiSolid LIBs will enable the creation of a battery digital twin, a virtual representation that facilitates comprehensive digital experimentation and simulation. The innovation will result in the following important benefits for FREYR:

i.	Exploring future innovations of the SemiSolid LIB technology with low effort and less time-consuming experimental work.
ii.	Enhance the quality assurance processes in battery production and reduce the scrap rate when upscaling the SemiSolid LIB process to gigafactory production volumes.

Platform for computational battery design

AI-Storyteller håper på å revolusjonere produksjonen av sportsinnhold ved å automatisere den arbeidskrevende prosessen med å skape videosammendrag. Dagens metoder, som involverer manuell håndtering av innholdet, er kostbare og tidkrevende. Ved å utnytte avansert kunstig intelligens, har prosjektet som mål å fullstendig automatisere opprettelse og kuratering av sammendrag og fortellinger, dermed redusere kostnader, manuelt arbeid og forsinkelser i publiseringen. Den foreslåtte AI-Storyteller-løsningen vil integrere ulike kunstig intelligens-komponenter i en enhetlig prosess. Den takler utfordringene med å skape engasjerende innhold for ulike fangrupper, som skal leveres på forskjellige mediekanaler og formater, og dermed muliggjør en effektiv generering av høydepunkter, sammendrag og innlegg.

Dette prosjektet har betydelig potensiale for verdiskapning, med løfte om økt produktivitet, redusert manuelt arbeid, raskere publisering og personlig publikumsengasjement. Det forbedrer ikke bare tjenester og prissetting for eksisterende kunder, men åpner også muligheter for å komme inn i nye markeder, og vil forhåpentligvis gi en rask avkastning på investeringen. AI-Storyteller markerer et banebrytende fremskritt innen sportsmedieadministrasjon, med fokus på effektivitet og tilgjengelighet i innholdsoppretting.

The AI-Storyteller project aims to revolutionize sports media production by fully automating the process making video compilations and stories. Today, organizations like broadcasters, sports clubs, and newspapers devote significant time and resources to content curation, involving various steps like event selection, summarization, metadata addition, and adjustments to fit media requirements and meet the target audience. This process is expensive and time-consuming, and necessitates expert skills.

The AI-Storyteller project leverages AI technologies to transition from this labor-intensive manual process to a fully automated operation, making story creation more efficient and accessible. It intends to automate various steps production pipeline and tailor content to different target audiences and media platforms' unique requirements, and reducing costs, manual labor, and publishing delays. While other systems partially automate AI-based summaries, none offer to the best of our knowledge a fully automated pipeline. The AI-Storyteller project stands as a significant innovation in sports media management by proposing a comprehensive AI-based system that integrates various AI and system components into a unified process. It replaces manual labor with AI agents, providing a new way for sports media to manage content.

The project addresses the needs of newspapers, broadcasters, sports clubs, and associations, who spend significant resources creating engaging content for different fan groups across various platforms. By automating this process, the project drastically reduces content creation time and resources, making it accessible to all users.

The AI-Storyteller project presents immense potential for value creation, promising increased productivity, reduced manual labor, faster publication, and personalized audience engagement. It could improve services and pricing for existing customers and potentially open new markets, promising a quick return on investment.

AI-Storyteller: Intelligent Content Curation for Sports

Deep Learning-based Facial Expression Recognition

SecureIoTM-prosjektet har som mål å omdefinere cybersikkerhetsstandardene for nettverkskoblede enheter. Når alt fra smarte kjøleskap til sporingssystemer inngår i IoT-økosystemet, blir deres sikkerhet av største betydning. Sentralt i denne innsatsen står Tsetlin Machine, en banebrytende metode innen maskinlæring som forener avansert beregningskraft med energieffektivitet.

I motsetning til tradisjonelle maskinlæringsrammeverk, setter Tsetlin Machine seg frem ved å kombinere høy ytelse med energieffektivitet. Med stadig flere enheter, fra essensielt medisinsk utstyr til kaffemaskiner, som integreres i IoT, setter SecureIoTM fokus på å styrke deres evne til å motstå cyberangrep og dermed beskytte både dataintegritet og privatliv.

Dette innovative prosjektet er et samarbeid mellom Center of Artificial Intelligence Research ved Universitetet i Agder, Sørlandet Hospital Trust, og Newcastle University. Det bygger på fire nøkkelpilarer for innovasjon.

Først og fremst vektlegger Kontinuerlig Læring enheters evne til stadig å lære og tilpasse seg, samtidig som tidligere kunnskap bevares. Adaptiv Kompleksitet refererer til Tsetlin-maskinens evne til dynamisk å endre sin modellkompleksitet etter oppgavens krav, balanserende presisjon og energibruk. Cybermotstandsdyktighet, som tredje pilare, går videre enn bare å oppdage trusler; det gir systemet kapasiteten til å aktivt bekjempe cybertrusler i sanntid. Til slutt sikrer Sømløs Integrasjon at SecureIoTMs løsninger kan integreres smidig inn i eksisterende IoT-nettverk, forsterkende deres innebygde intelligens og sikkerhet.

Skulle SecureIoTM realisere sine ambisjoner, kan det omdefinere dagens standarder for trusseldeteksjon innen IoT, med metoder som er mer adaptive, robuste og energieffektive.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has major security concerns because of its limited ability to dedicate system resources to security mechanisms. Combined with billions of resource-constrained devices in healthcare, agriculture, and industry, this offers cybercrime an economic incentive. IoT is heterogeneous systems, making traditional security considerably more difficult to implement. Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are particularly difficult since conventional stand-alone anomaly detection cannot run at low energy, required for power-hungry Wi-Fi.  We need IDS for IoT, as attackers can gain device access when passive security fails. 

Tsetlin Machines (TMs), a new machine learning (ML) technique based on the Tsetlin Automaton, can meet the energy requirements of IoT. TM hardware (HW) has proven over ten orders of magnitude less energy and faster learning compared to NNs, outperforming vanilla and binary forms of CNNs and Feed-Forward on well-established benchmarks. TMs extract common patterns in data via frequent pattern mining and resource allocation instead of output error minimization, which is prone to overfitting. With its ultra-low-energy architecture, TM is key to creating state-of-the-art IDS, but it requires study in three crucial areas. 

1) Continual Learning for TM is crucial to online training as new sensor data or WIFI signals enter without catastrophic forgetting.  Machine learning, particularly TM, needs better techniques to prevent catastrophic forgetting. 

2) Automatic tuning of hyperparameters for multimodal and temporal data is extremely difficult since IoT and its heterogeneity make individual devices modality-specific. This means that each device requires specific hyperparameter tuning, which is impossible for millions of IoT devices.

3) Cyber-Resilient Training is crucial to training robust models where attackers can't modify data undetected. An attack can readily deceive training without robust models, making anomaly detection ineffective.

SecureIoTM: Ultra-low-energy IoT Intrusion Detection Systems using Logic-based Tsetlin Machines

Det er et globalt voksende behov for effektiv, trygg og bærekraftig vannbåren mobilitet. Samtidig er det et behov for å redusere karbonutslippene fra sjøfartsindustrien. Utslippsreduksjon i vannbåren mobilitet medfører betydelige kostnader og kan bare realiseres dersom det kombineres med mer effektivt bemannede operasjoner. Dette behovet er forsterket av en globalt økende mangel på erfarne sjøfolk, noe som hemmer ytterligere vekst innen vannbåren mobilitet. Et økende antall initiativer peker på autonomi som en løsning. Basert på disse trendene forventer vi å se fremveksten av elektriske og autonome fartøy for å imøtekomme samfunns- og forretningsbehov. Sikkerhet er en viktig forutsetning for at nye autonome transportløsninger blir akseptert i samfunnet. Bilindustrien har arbeidet mot autonomi i over et tiår, med investeringer som overstiger 100 milliarder dollar, noe som har resultert i et bredt utvalg av kostnadseffektive og høyt ytende hardwareprodukter, samt en stor kunnskapsbase i form av publisert forskning og internasjonale standarder. Typen sensorer, algoritmer og sikkerhetsmetodikk som brukes innen bilindustrien har mange likheter med de som brukes for vannbåren autonomi. Å utnytte utviklingen innen bilindustrien kan derfor drastisk redusere kostnadene og tiden som trengs for å realisere skalerbar autonom vannmobiltet. Dette prosjektet vil fokusere på tre områder: 1) Sikker og kostnadseffektiv integrering av hardware fra bilindustrien i autonome fartøy. 2) Smidige design- og utviklingsprosesser egnet for sikkerhetskritisk og KI-basert software. 3) Metoder for å etablere og vedlikeholde et sikkerhetsbevis, som er en strukturert argumentasjon, understøttet av bevis, for å demonstrere sikkerheten til et system. Forskningen vil innebære gjennomgang av vitenskapelig litteratur og internasjonale standarder, samarbeid med relevante hardwareprodusenter og internasjonalt anerkjente eksperter fra bilindustrien, samt en pilotimplementering på et Zeabuz-autonomiprodukt.

Around the globe, the need for efficient, safe and sustainable waterborne mobility is growing. There is also an urgent need to decarbonize the maritime industry, but this comes with a substantial cost and can only become a reality if coupled with leaner operations. This need is reinforced by a global shortage of trained maritime crew, inhibiting further growth of waterborne mobility. An increasing number of initiatives and references point to autonomy as a key enabler for this transition. Summarizing these trends, it appears inevitable that we will see the emergence of a range of electric and autonomous vessel concepts to serve societal and business needs, and with this the need for scalable, trustworthy, and safe maritime autonomy. The automotive industry has worked towards autonomy for over a decade with combined investments exceeding 100 billion dollars, resulting in a range of cost-efficient and highly performant autonomy hardware products, as well as a huge body of knowledge in the form of published research and international standards. The types of sensors, AI algorithms, and safety tools that are needed for enabling waterborne autonomy are very similar to what has been developed for automotive. Leveraging the developments from automotive can therefore drastically reduce the cost and time needed to realize scalable autonomous waterborne transport. This project will focus on three key areas where automotive developments can be leveraged: 1) Safe and cost-efficient integration of automotive autonomy products into autonomous vessels. 2) Agile design and development processes suitable for safety-critical and AI-based software. 3) Methods for establishing and maintaining a safety case. The research will involve systematic review of the scientific literature and international standards, collaboration and dialog with relevant automotive OEMs, collaboration with internationally recognized automotive experts, and pilot implementation on a Zeabuz autonomy product.
